If a GStreamer stream to YouTube keeps disconnecting, first confirm that your pipeline is publishing with rtmpsink, then check the YouTube RTMPS endpoint and key, encoder output, upload connection, and YouTube’s stream-health diagnostics. The title alone does not identify the cause: the right fix depends on whether GStreamer is sending a stream to YouTube or receiving one from elsewhere.
First confirm that GStreamer is publishing to YouTube
Check the direction of data flow before changing settings. For a YouTube broadcast, your pipeline should send data to a network sink such as rtmpsink. GStreamer documents rtmpsink as an RTMP network sink using librtmp. rtmpsrc, by contrast, reads an incoming stream from a location; receive-side advice for it will not fix a publishing failure. See the GStreamer rtmpsink documentation.
Before troubleshooting, record the GStreamer version, the complete pipeline with the stream key and other secrets removed, the exact time and point at which the failure occurs, and the full bus error and debug output. Note whether it fails at startup or only after streaming for a while. Without these details, no single root cause can be identified reliably.
Check the YouTube endpoint, protocol, and stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room for the intended broadcast and verify the server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- If using RTMPS, make sure the pipeline uses YouTube’s RTMPS address, not an RTMP address. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says the server and protocol should both be RTMPS when using that protocol.
- If you see an SSL error, check the hostname and port. YouTube specifically recommends checking port 443 and confirming that the encoder supports RTMPS.
- Keep the stream key private. If it may have been exposed in logs, a screenshot, or a shared pipeline, replace it in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder.
Use YouTube’s live-streaming troubleshooting guidance for its current endpoint and connection checks.

Separate encoder problems from network problems
Inspect what the encoder is producing
Check the local preview or a local recording, if your pipeline creates one. Look for frozen or missing video, absent audio, gaps in output, and encoder errors at the time YouTube disconnects. Also check CPU load: if the machine cannot encode continuously, the outgoing stream may become irregular even when the network is available.
Test the outbound connection
If the local output remains healthy, investigate the connection from the streaming machine to YouTube. Test upload performance under conditions similar to the broadcast, and check for interruptions or loss rather than relying only on a headline speed result. YouTube recommends testing the actual connection and contacting your ISP if the connection itself has problems.

Do not assume a particular cable, adapter, router, or PC utility is the fix. The evidence points first to the pipeline, encoder, network connection, or YouTube-side diagnostics; hardware changes make sense only when measurements or a known fault implicate that hardware.
Match bitrate and video settings to YouTube’s guidance
Compare the actual outgoing codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate with YouTube’s recommendations. The figures below are YouTube’s published recommended setting ranges for H.264, not a measurement of your upload connection and not a guarantee against disconnection. Recommendations vary with video format and codec.

| H.264 video format | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, with an interval no greater than 4 seconds. Do not raise bitrate simply because a stream disconnects: choose a setting appropriate to the available, sustained upload capacity. YouTube advises testing before the live event with audio and video movement similar to the planned stream. Consult its current live encoder settings and troubleshooting information.
Read YouTube’s stream-health diagnostics
Check Live Control Room while the encoder is publishing. YouTube’s Live API distinguishes stream states such as active (receiving data), inactive (not receiving data), and error, and exposes health states including good, ok, bad, and noData. Named configuration issues can include low video bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, or no audio stream. These signals help narrow down whether YouTube is receiving data and whether the stream configuration has a reported issue; they do not, by themselves, prove why a connection was interrupted. See the YouTube Live API stream resource.

Choose a protocol for a concrete reason
YouTube supports RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingestion. For an RTMP-family publishing pipeline that supports it, RTMPS is the natural secure choice. HLS or DASH may be relevant for particular codec or higher-resolution needs, but they have higher latency and are not suitable for ultra-low latency. Switching protocols is not a generic cure for disconnects: first establish whether the failure is endpoint, encoder, network, or stream-configuration related. YouTube describes the trade-offs in its live-streaming protocol and encoder guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Be careful with reconnect advice
GStreamer’s buffering and clock-loss tutorial discusses improving playback behavior when network problems occur. That is a playback example; it does not establish that rtmpsink automatically reconnects to YouTube after a publishing disconnect. Likewise, a buffering setting should not be presented as a guaranteed publishing-side recovery mechanism.

Once you have the exact error and know which layer failed, choose a recovery approach appropriate to that failure. Avoid adding retries that repeatedly send bad credentials or an invalid pipeline; they can hide the original error without restoring a valid stream.
Common symptoms and next checks
| Symptom | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Connection fails immediately | Confirm the publishing element is rtmpsink, then verify the current YouTube URL, stream key, protocol, hostname, port, and RTMPS support. |
| SSL or TLS error | Check that the URL is YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint, the port is 443, and the installed encoder/plugin stack supports RTMPS. |
| Stream starts, then stops receiving data | Compare the local encoder output and error timestamps with upload-connection results and Live Control Room health status. |
| YouTube reports low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, or no audio | Inspect the outgoing stream’s actual bitrate, frame rate, and audio presence; compare them with the configuration you intended to publish. |
| Local output is already frozen or incomplete | Investigate the GStreamer pipeline, encoder errors, and CPU load before treating the issue as a YouTube or ISP problem. |
| Local output is healthy but publishing still fails | Investigate endpoint and protocol configuration, outbound connectivity, and YouTube’s health diagnostics; contact the ISP if testing indicates the connection is faulty. |
