You can use GStreamer on Ubuntu to encode a video and send it to YouTube Live, but the documented GStreamer elements cited here do not provide a verified, built-in command for looping one ordinary video file indefinitely. For a dependable repeat, put explicit loop control in a GStreamer application or use a separately verified looping pipeline design. The setup below covers YouTube’s ingest requirements and the GStreamer pipeline pieces without presenting an unverified command as tested.
What you need before you start
- An Ubuntu system with GStreamer tools and the plug-ins needed to read your file, encode video and audio, mux FLV, and send RTMP or RTMPS.
- A YouTube channel eligible to stream. YouTube currently requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days and a minimum age of 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- A video file whose audio, picture, duration, and rights you have checked.
- A stable upload connection sized for your selected video and audio bitrates, plus operating-system access to install packages if needed.
On Ubuntu, the GStreamer command-line tools package is named gstreamer1.0-tools. Install the package for your Ubuntu release; the package version varies by release, so do not assume the Noble version applies to Jammy or another edition. GStreamer describes gst-launch-1.0 as a pipeline debugging tool and recommends its API for production applications. See the GStreamer tools tutorial.
Choose YouTube-compatible stream settings
YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as encoder protocols and recommends RTMPS. Its published encoder settings include H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); AAC or MP3 audio; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
| H.264 output | YouTube-listed minimum bitrate | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube-published configuration recommendations, not independently measured performance results. YouTube provides other bitrate recommendations for different resolutions, frame rates, and codecs on its settings page. Pick a target your connection can sustain rather than automatically choosing the highest resolution.

YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom above the combined primary, backup, and stream bitrates. For example, estimate the full outgoing bitrate—not video alone—and leave that margin available. Follow YouTube’s streaming tips for preparation and network checks.
Get the YouTube RTMPS URL and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
- Open the stream settings and reveal or copy the RTMPS server URL and stream key. YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default; confirm that the selected URL uses
rtmps. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup guidance. - Enter the URL and key into the encoder or your application’s protected configuration. Do not publish the key, put it in source control, or expose it in shared logs, screenshots, or shell history.
- If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. YouTube treats a stream key like a password. See YouTube’s guidance on stream keys and settings.
For certain SSL errors, YouTube advises checking that the URL is correct and trying port 443. Do not switch to an unencrypted endpoint without a specific reason.

How GStreamer fits together—and where looping belongs
A typical GStreamer sending pipeline has four jobs: read and decode the media, encode audio and video to settings YouTube accepts, mux the streams into FLV, then send that output to YouTube. GStreamer documents uridecodebin for decoding and x264enc for H.264 encoding; its tutorial notes that tune=zerolatency can suit live-streaming scenarios but trades away quality. The GStreamer streaming tutorial explains those elements, but it is not a complete YouTube-ready recipe.
For network output, GStreamer documents rtmpsink after FLV muxing. The sink is part of the Bad Plug-ins set. That documentation establishes the element and its intended role, but it does not establish that a particular Ubuntu build can connect to YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint. Check the elements and transport support installed on your own release before relying on them. See the rtmpsink documentation.

The key limitation is repeat behavior. GStreamer’s multifilesrc reads numbered file sequences, and splitmuxsrc reads parts created by splitmuxsink; neither documentation page demonstrates indefinitely repeating a single ordinary MP4. See multifilesrc and splitmuxsrc.
Therefore, do not assume that a plain gst-launch-1.0 pipeline loops when a file reaches its end. A continuous single-file loop needs explicit loop control in an application or a separately verified looping source/pipeline design. The sources cited here do not establish exact API calls or guarantee a seamless audio/video boundary, so test the transition with your actual file and installed plug-ins. For a production stream, a small GStreamer application is the better place to own repeat logic, handle end-of-stream, and manage reconnect and error behavior.

Build and validate the stream before going live
Check the local GStreamer installation
Use the package manager for your Ubuntu release to install gstreamer1.0-tools and the relevant GStreamer plug-ins. Check that the installed build provides the decoders for your media, the selected encoders, FLV muxing, and the RTMP/RTMPS output you plan to use. The documented rtmpsink support alone does not guarantee that your installation can reach YouTube over RTMPS.
Implement repeat logic deliberately
Use a GStreamer application if you need a controlled, ongoing loop. Design and test how it detects the end of the file, starts playback again, preserves audio/video synchronization, and reacts to network loss. Do not claim seamless looping or automatic reconnection until you have verified those behaviors with your chosen application and Ubuntu plug-ins.
Test privately before the intended broadcast
- Use a representative portion of the video with the intended motion and audio, not a silent or still-image test alone.
- Start the encoder and inspect YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health messages before making the stream public.
- Check that picture and sound remain synchronized, the selected resolution and frame rate are correct, and the stream does not fail at the file boundary.
- Confirm that your outbound connection sustains the combined bitrate with the recommended 20% headroom.
- Monitor audio and video while the stream runs. Stop the encoder when the event is over. See YouTube’s streaming tips and live-stream operation and eligibility guidance.
Copyright, reused content, and channel risk
Streaming a file repeatedly does not grant permission to broadcast it. Before going live, confirm that you own or have permission for the video, music, images, and other material in the file. YouTube’s live-stream eligibility rules can also affect whether a channel may broadcast, so check the current requirements before scheduling a long-running stream. A loop is a delivery method, not an exemption from copyright or platform rules.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| GStreamer reports a missing element | The required tool or plug-in is not installed for this Ubuntu release. | Install the appropriate package for your release and verify that the needed decoder, encoder, muxer, or sink is available. |
| The stream reaches YouTube but shows no picture or sound | Media decoding, encoder settings, stream mapping, or FLV muxing. | Test a representative file locally, confirm the selected codecs and audio/video outputs, and inspect YouTube’s preview and health messages. |
| RTMPS connection or SSL error | Wrong server URL, unsupported local transport, or endpoint/port issue. | Confirm you copied the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room. YouTube advises checking the URL and, for certain SSL errors, trying port 443. Verify the capabilities of your installed sink. |
| Stream stops when the file ends | No repeat control is handling end-of-stream. | Implement and test single-file loop control in an application or use a separately verified looping design. The documented numbered-file and split-file sources are not proof of single-file repeat behavior. |
| Video stutters or the connection is unstable | Insufficient sustained upload capacity or an unsuitable bitrate target. | Choose a lower supported output target if needed, check the total outgoing bitrate, and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth headroom. |
| Stream key no longer works or may be exposed | The key was changed, copied incorrectly, or compromised. | Check the current key in Live Control Room; reset it if it may have been exposed, then update the encoder’s protected configuration. |
