To publish with FFmpeg to IBM Video Streaming, use the RTMP or RTMPS URL and Stream Key shown for your IBM channel in its Broadcast Settings. To send the same program to YouTube as well, configure a separate YouTube ingest URL and key: the two services do not share credentials. The steps below show how to gather each destination’s values, choose compatible encoding settings, and build an illustrative FFmpeg command without implying that one unverified command is guaranteed to work on every system.
What you need before configuring FFmpeg
- An IBM Video Streaming channel with permission to broadcast and access to its Broadcast Settings.
- A YouTube live stream created or selected in Live Control Room, with its own ingest URL and stream key.
- An FFmpeg build that includes the protocols and codecs you intend to use. Check the options available in your installed build; FFmpeg documents its command-line workflow and supported protocols at FFmpeg’s CLI documentation and protocol documentation.
- A stable upload connection with enough capacity for the combined outputs, plus permission through any network firewall to reach the chosen ingest services.
Keep both keys private. A stream key can authorize publishing to the associated channel; do not put a real key in a public command example, screenshot, shared log, or other exposed text.
Get the IBM channel’s ingest URL and key
- Sign in to IBM Video Streaming and select the channel you intend to broadcast to.
- Open Broadcast Settings, then the Encoder Settings area. Choose View to reveal the channel’s RTMP URL and Stream Key.
- Copy the URL and key carefully into a secure local configuration. Confirm they belong to the selected channel and do not include extra spaces. IBM’s instructions say to keep the key private. See IBM’s Broadcast Settings guide.
For third-party encoders, IBM recommends manual configuration rather than older Ustream plugin or IBM credential-login flows, which can cause broadcasting issues. Use the account-issued RTMP settings directly; see IBM’s encoder setup guidance.
Get YouTube’s separate ingest details
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the live stream for the event.
- Copy the stream’s ingest server URL and its YouTube stream key from the stream settings.
- If choosing RTMPS, check that the URL uses the correct secure protocol, server, application path, and port 443. YouTube describes those requirements in its RTMPS ingest guide.
IBM’s key is not a substitute for YouTube’s key, and the IBM endpoint is not YouTube’s endpoint. Each output must use credentials issued by its own service.

Choose an encoding profile for the destinations
Choose a profile based on your source, target resolution and frame rate, available upload bandwidth, and what both destinations accept. A single encoded stream sent to both destinations must be compatible with both; if their requirements differ, plan separate outputs and validate each one rather than assuming one preset fits both.
| Use case or setting | Guidance | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended | YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not an IBM guarantee |
| YouTube H.264, 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended | YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not an IBM guarantee |
| YouTube keyframes | Recommended two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds | YouTube guidance |
| YouTube general settings | RTMP/RTMPS; CBR; up to 60 fps; supported codec and bitrate depend on resolution, frame rate, and codec. YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt the connection. | Consult the current YouTube encoder settings for codec-specific details and HDR caveats. |
| IBM Pearl-2 example | H.264 Main, 1280×720, one-second keyframes, 25 or 30 fps, 1200–4000 kbps video, AAC audio at 48 kHz and 128 kbps | An IBM Pearl-2/cloud-transcoding example, not a mandatory FFmpeg profile or universal IBM requirement; see IBM’s Pearl-2 guide. |
Do not treat the Pearl-2 figures as a universal FFmpeg preset, or YouTube’s recommended values as a promise that IBM will accept the same profile. Match codec, resolution and frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, latency needs, and secure-ingest protocol to the actual destination setup.

Build the FFmpeg output
FFmpeg reads an input, applies any selected processing, and writes to one or more outputs. The following is illustrative syntax only: the reviewed service documentation does not verify a single end-to-end command for simultaneous IBM and YouTube publishing. Replace every bracketed value with your own paths and account-issued endpoint details, check your installed FFmpeg build’s options, and validate the command in a test stream before relying on it.
ffmpeg -re -i "INPUT_FILE"
-c:v libx264 -b:v VIDEO_BITRATE -maxrate VIDEO_BITRATE -bufsize VIDEO_BUFFER
-r FRAME_RATE -g KEYFRAME_INTERVAL_IN_FRAMES
-c:a aac -b:a AUDIO_BITRATE -ar 48000
-f flv "IBM_RTMP_OR_RTMPS_URL/IBM_STREAM_KEY"
-c:v libx264 -b:v VIDEO_BITRATE -maxrate VIDEO_BITRATE -bufsize VIDEO_BUFFER
-r FRAME_RATE -g KEYFRAME_INTERVAL_IN_FRAMES
-c:a aac -b:a AUDIO_BITRATE -ar 48000
-f flv "YOUTUBE_RTMP_OR_RTMPS_URL/YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
This example spells out two outputs to make the separate destinations and credentials visible; exact option behavior, URL construction, stream mapping, and protocol support depend on the FFmpeg build and service-issued URL format. It is not a tested command, and placeholders are not literal values. Consult the FFmpeg protocol reference and FFmpeg CLI reference for your build before adapting it. Avoid placing live keys in scripts or shell history that others can read.

If you choose YouTube RTMPS, use YouTube’s correct secure endpoint and port 443. IBM supports RTMPS as well; use the URL exposed in your IBM channel’s Broadcast Settings rather than constructing one from YouTube’s format. YouTube also documents HLS for HDR or codecs that are unsupported through RTMP; segmented HLS delivery has higher latency. The available IBM workflow guidance here does not establish IBM HLS ingest, so do not assume YouTube’s HLS route applies to IBM. See YouTube’s HLS setup instructions and IBM’s secure-ingest guidance.
Test and monitor before the event
- Run a test using representative movement and audio, not only a static frame or silent clip.
- Check that IBM and YouTube each show an incoming signal and that the preview has the expected picture and sound.
- Monitor stream health during the test. YouTube explicitly recommends testing and monitoring in its encoder guidance.
- If you change resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, or keyframe interval, test again; a successful connection alone does not establish that the settings are appropriate for the whole broadcast.
Troubleshooting and key security
IBM rejects the connection or shows no incoming video
- Verify that the URL and key came from the selected IBM channel’s Broadcast Settings, and recopy them without whitespace.
- Use manual RTMP configuration in FFmpeg rather than an older Ustream plugin or IBM credential-login integration.
- Check whether the network blocks outbound ingest traffic. IBM’s firewall guidance lists outbound TCP 1935 for RTMP and describes separate secure-ingest ports; firewall needs depend on the account and network. Consult IBM’s current firewall guidance before changing firewall rules.
YouTube does not connect over RTMPS
- Confirm that the URL is YouTube’s own RTMPS endpoint with the correct server, application path, and port 443, and that you used the matching YouTube key.
- Review the YouTube stream’s incoming status and the exact codec and profile settings against its encoder requirements.
Video or audio is unstable
- Check that the chosen bitrate is supportable by the upload connection and that frame rate, keyframe interval, and codec match the selected profile.
- Repeat the representative-motion-and-audio test, then monitor each platform independently; a healthy connection to one destination does not prove the other is receiving correctly.
A key may have been exposed
Treat an exposed key as compromised. Replace or reset it through the relevant service’s live-stream settings, update the local FFmpeg configuration, and verify that only the new key can publish. Never reuse IBM’s key for YouTube or share either service’s key publicly.
