For a YouTube-only live stream, MediaLive can send video directly to YouTube over RTMPS; MediaPackage is not automatically required. MediaLive is the live input and transcoding service. MediaPackage adds live origination and packaging for configured playback endpoints and formats. Use it when that extra layer meets a specific delivery need—not as a substitute for an encoder.
What each service does
AWS Elemental MediaLive: ingest and transcode
MediaLive processes a live input and can produce different output types. AWS lists RTMP/RTMPS server output and MediaPackage output as separate supported destinations, so a YouTube workflow can use a direct RTMPS output rather than routing through MediaPackage. AWS’s MediaLive output support documentation describes the available output paths.
AWS Elemental MediaPackage: originate and package
MediaPackage sits downstream of an encoder. It receives a live stream, packages it into configured formats, and provides playback endpoints when downstream devices request content. MediaPackage v2 supports CMAF ingest and HLS/DASH outputs. See AWS’s descriptions of the MediaPackage live processing flow and supported inputs and outputs.
YouTube: ingest and viewer-side delivery
YouTube accepts an encoder feed and automatically transcodes the incoming live stream into output formats for viewers. That means a YouTube-only workflow generally has no need for MediaPackage unless it also needs a separate origin, packaging, or distribution function. This is an architecture recommendation based on the services’ documented roles, not a rule that applies identically to every production.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
AWS’s MediaLive tutorial demonstrates a MediaLive-to-MediaPackage HLS workflow. It is an example of that architecture, not a prerequisite for sending a live stream to YouTube.
Which path fits your workflow?
| Requirement | Likely path | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Send one live event to YouTube only | MediaLive directly to YouTube over RTMPS | MediaLive supports RTMP/RTMPS output, and YouTube recommends RTMPS. |
| Provide AWS-configured playback endpoints or formats | MediaLive to MediaPackage, then the required playback path | MediaPackage provides live origination and packaging for supported endpoint formats. |
| Deliver to YouTube and other destinations | Choose direct MediaLive outputs or an origin/packaging layer per destination | The right design depends on the destinations, required formats, and operational requirements. |
| Need low-latency HLS through MediaPackage | Evaluate MediaPackage v2 with CMAF ingest | AWS recommends the v2 configuration for new workflows and identifies low-latency HLS support. This is separate from YouTube’s own latency setting. |
Before choosing, identify the destinations, output formats, latency target, resiliency and operational needs. Cost and regional availability are not established here; compare current AWS pricing and confirm the services and required features in your intended region before committing to an architecture.

Configure the MediaLive-to-YouTube path
- Create or schedule the YouTube live event. In YouTube Studio, configure the stream and obtain its ingest server URL and stream key. Treat the key as a credential: do not expose it in logs, screenshots, or shared configuration.
- Set up the MediaLive input and channel. Configure the source input and the video/audio processing required for the event. For a direct YouTube path, choose an RTMP/RTMPS server output group rather than a MediaPackage output group.
- Use YouTube’s RTMPS ingest details. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Enter the server address and key in the appropriate output destination fields in MediaLive, following the current AWS console workflow and YouTube event details.
- Choose encoding settings for the actual source and event. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 options, constant bitrate encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (maximum four seconds). Its H.264 recommendations include 14 Mbps for 1080p/30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p/60 fps. These are Google/YouTube’s published recommendations, accessed 2026—not universal presets. The table varies by resolution, frame rate, and codec, so check the current YouTube encoder settings and match the configuration to your source and available network capacity.
- Test before the event. Send representative motion and audio, then monitor YouTube stream health and confirm the expected picture, sound, and stability before relying on the feed for a live program. YouTube specifically advises testing representative content and checking stream health.
- Use MediaPackage only if another requirement calls for it. If you need MediaPackage’s origin or packaging functions, configure a MediaLive output for MediaPackage and set up the corresponding MediaPackage channel and endpoints. Confirm the playback path for the intended downstream audience; this is a different workflow from direct YouTube ingest.
Common design and setup problems
- Adding MediaPackage simply because an AWS tutorial uses it: the tutorial shows one HLS-to-MediaPackage pattern, not a required YouTube route. For YouTube alone, assess direct RTMPS output first.
- Sending the wrong output type: MediaPackage output and RTMP/RTMPS server output are distinct MediaLive choices. Select the one that matches the next service in the path.
- Using an incorrect or stale stream key: verify the YouTube event’s current ingest details and update the destination configuration if the key or event changed. Keep the key private.
- Unstable or unhealthy ingest: test with representative audio and motion, verify the configured bitrate against the available upload capacity, and review YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Do not assume a published bitrate recommendation guarantees a healthy stream on every network.
- Unexpected viewer playback formats: YouTube handles viewer-side transcoding for its platform. MediaPackage’s playback endpoints serve a separate packaging/origin requirement; inserting it does not replace YouTube’s ingest and event setup.
- Latency expectations do not match the architecture: low-latency HLS support in MediaPackage v2 concerns that packaging workflow. It does not set or guarantee YouTube Live latency.
Costs and operational checks
MediaLive and MediaPackage are separate AWS services, and the appropriate design depends on what you actually need to process and deliver. No current service prices, regional availability, quotas, or account constraints are established here, so do not infer that either design is cheaper or available in every region. Check AWS’s current service pricing and regional documentation for your planned configuration before estimating total cost.
