Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor an IBM Video Streaming feed intended for YouTube, start with a 720p, 25 or 30 fps H.264 Main input at 1,200–4,000 kbps, AAC-LC audio at 128 kbps and 44.1 or 48 kHz, and a fixed one-second keyframe interval. Use IBM’s own ingest URL and stream key; for YouTube, use its separate URL and key. YouTube’s 720p30 H.264 guidance recommends 8 Mbps and a two-second keyframe interval, so a single feed configured for both services involves a trade-off rather than a perfect match. [IBM settings; YouTube encoder settings]
Recommended settings for an IBM-to-YouTube feed
IBM’s baseline is designed for sending a single HD input to its cloud transcoding service. The practical shared format is H.264 video with AAC audio, but the platforms’ preferred bitrate and keyframe interval differ.
| Setting | IBM Video Streaming guidance | YouTube guidance | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 1280×720 at 25 or 30 fps for typical cloud-transcoding HD input | 720p30 H.264 guidance lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended | Use 720p30 when the source is 30 fps; otherwise match the source frame rate. Do not upscale. |
| Video codec | H.264 Main for the typical 720p input; general guidance allows Main or High | H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 | H.264 is the straightforward shared option. |
| Video bitrate | 1,200–4,000 kbps for typical 720p cloud-transcoding input | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended for 720p30 H.264 | IBM’s range overlaps YouTube’s minimum but falls short of its recommendation except at the upper edge. Test the shared feed and inspect quality and ingest health. |
| Keyframe interval | One second in the 720p baseline; fixed 1–2 seconds generally | Two seconds recommended; no more than four seconds | A fixed one-second interval follows IBM’s baseline and remains within YouTube’s stated maximum, though it is not YouTube’s preferred interval. |
| Audio | AAC-LC, 128 kbps, 44.1 or 48 kHz, mono or stereo | AAC or MP3; 128 kbps stereo at 44.1 kHz | AAC at 128 kbps is a compatible shared setting. |
| Rate control | Not specified in the cited baseline | CBR | Set CBR for the YouTube profile. If using separate per-destination outputs, validate the IBM-specific profile with your encoder. |
| Protocol | RTMP and RTMPS; RTMPS is available through the secure ingest endpoint | RTMP and RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS | Prefer RTMPS when available, using each platform’s own URL and key. |
IBM also recommends a 16:9 aspect ratio, progressive rather than interlaced video, and matching or downscaling the source rather than upscaling it. For HD 1080 input at 25 or 30 fps, its stated range is 4,000–8,000 kbps. Higher resolutions require more encoder capacity and bandwidth. IBM multi-quality output depends on account configuration, selected output qualities and ingest quality; check that it is enabled in the channel’s Broadcast Settings.
YouTube’s bitrate guidance varies by resolution, frame rate and codec. The 720p30 figures above do not apply to every 720p or 1080p profile; consult YouTube’s current table for the profile you select. YouTube supports H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, but H.264/AAC is the practical overlap for an IBM feed.

Choose one shared feed or separate outputs
One encoder feed to both destinations
A single encoded feed is simpler to operate, but it must use one bitrate and keyframe interval for both destinations. IBM’s 720p bitrate range tops out at YouTube’s 3 Mbps minimum, while YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for 720p30 H.264. IBM’s one-second baseline keyframes also differ from YouTube’s two-second recommendation. Test the actual feed rather than treating a platform minimum as a quality target.
Separate destination profiles
If your encoder supports multiple outputs or encodes, separate profiles can let you target each platform’s guidance more closely. Confirm the encoder and network can sustain both outputs and that the account’s IBM configuration supports the intended workflow. Never assume IBM’s ingest URL or key will publish to YouTube, or vice versa.

Configure and test the stream
- Get IBM credentials. In IBM Video Streaming, open the target channel’s Broadcast Settings and reveal Encoder Settings. Copy that channel’s RTMP URL and stream key. Choose the secure RTMPS endpoint when the account provides one. Treat the key as a publishing credential and keep it private. [IBM settings]
- Get YouTube credentials separately. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its stream URL and key into the YouTube output configuration. YouTube likewise treats the stream key as an encoder credential. [YouTube Live Control Room]
- Set the encoder profile. Use the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval and audio settings above. Choose a shared profile or separate destination outputs according to your encoder’s capabilities.
- Test representative content before relying on it. Include motion and audio. Confirm each service receives the intended output, review video and audio health, and verify that local recording storage is available. YouTube recommends testing the encoder and monitoring Live Control Room stream-health indicators. [YouTube encoder settings]
- Check network headroom. IBM prefers wired Ethernet and recommends keeping target stream bitrate at or below half of available upload bandwidth. Allow additional capacity for other network use and any second output.
Plan for YouTube archives on a 24/7 channel
A continuous broadcast and a single continuous archived video are different things. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If retaining YouTube archives matters, plan to end and restart the stream before the 12-hour point and keep a local recording as a backup. Test the restart and handoff in advance: the available guidance does not promise that scheduled segment changes are seamless or without audience impact. [YouTube: Archive live streams]
Platform settings do not guarantee that a particular IBM account or encoder will sustain an uninterrupted 24/7 feed. Before production, verify account-specific ingest and multi-quality options, recording storage, audio, failover behavior and playback on representative viewer devices. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health; the sources do not establish a guarantee of uninterrupted uptime.

Keep the content eligible and the channel in good standing
Encoding settings cannot resolve rights or channel-policy problems. Use only footage, music and other material you have permission to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies for your channel and content. A stream’s technical availability does not establish that its content qualifies for monetization or complies with platform rules. If you rely on archived segments, make sure the local recording and archive workflow do not lead you to republish material without the necessary rights.
When a dedicated encoder is worth considering
A software encoder on an existing computer may be sufficient. For a higher-production or always-on installation, a hardware video encoder for live streaming is another option; IBM supports third-party hardware encoders, and YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. No particular model is established as certified or universally compatible, so verify the model’s formats, output count, RTMPS support and failover behavior against your own setup before buying.

Troubleshoot common problems
- IBM or YouTube does not receive video: Check that the destination has its own correct URL and stream key, and confirm the encoder is publishing to the intended output. Refresh credentials in the platform if the key has been changed.
- Connection drops or stream health fluctuates: Prefer wired Ethernet, check available upload bandwidth and keep the target bitrate within IBM’s half-of-available-upload recommendation. Review the relevant platform’s health indicators before changing resolution or bitrate.
- Image quality looks weak on YouTube: A 720p30 H.264 feed at or below 4 Mbps is below YouTube’s 8 Mbps recommendation, even though it reaches the stated 3 Mbps minimum at the upper end of IBM’s input range. Test a higher-quality output only if your IBM configuration and available bandwidth can support it.
- Audio is missing or distorted: Verify the encoder is sending AAC audio at the selected sample rate and bitrate, confirm the correct input is active, and check audio health in the receiving platform during a test.
- Archive is missing or incomplete: Check stream duration. YouTube warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured; use planned restarts and a local recording when keeping archives is important.
- Multi-quality choices do not appear: Check the account’s channel configuration and whether multi-quality output is enabled in Broadcast Settings. Availability depends on account configuration, selected output qualities and ingest quality.
