To run devotional videos continuously on YouTube from an Indian VPS, enable YouTube Live, prepare recordings you have the right to broadcast, then run FFmpeg on a server with enough outbound data allowance. Use YouTube’s server URL and stream key, configure the output to match its current encoder recommendations, and supervise the process: a VPS and an automatic restart do not guarantee an uninterrupted or YouTube-healthy stream.
Before you start
This workflow is for prerecorded bhajans, kirtan, Gurbani, or other devotional programming—not for broadcasting a live camera. You will need a YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, video and audio files suitable for continuous playback, permission to use every recording and visual, and an Indian VPS you can administer. You should also be comfortable using a Linux shell and protecting credentials.
- Have a stable, ordered set of media files and decide whether to repeat one recording or rotate a playlist.
- Check that the VPS plan permits the sustained outbound traffic your stream will generate. The provider’s transfer allowance and fair-use policy matter as much as CPU, RAM, and disk.
- Decide how you will respond to a stopped FFmpeg process, an unhealthy YouTube preview, and a stream that needs a scheduled restart.
Enable YouTube Live and create a broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming for the channel. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do this before the day you plan to launch.
- Open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a broadcast. Select the appropriate audience and visibility, and review the channel’s live-stream settings.
- Choose the encoder connection details and copy the server URL and stream key issued by YouTube. Use the exact URL and key shown for that broadcast; do not substitute an endpoint from an old tutorial.
- Keep the stream key private. Do not put it in a public script, repository, screenshot, shared chat, or unprotected log. If it is exposed, rotate it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
- Open YouTube’s preview or stream-health view before going live so you can confirm that the incoming picture and sound are decodable.
Prepare a rights-cleared devotional playlist
A file being available online, an MP3 being in your possession, or a melody being traditional does not establish permission to broadcast a particular recording. A devotional stream can involve separate rights in the underlying composition, the sound recording, and any artwork, video, or other visuals.
- Identify the exact recordings and visuals you plan to use, including tracks added to a playlist later.
- Get written permission or licences that cover continuous YouTube livestreaming, the territories and period involved, and monetization if you intend to monetize.
- Ask who administers Content ID and whether your channel needs to be allowlisted. Keep licences, invoices, permission messages, and contributor or session releases together.
- Arrange the files in playback order. Listen across each transition; check for silence, clipped endings, abrupt changes in loudness, or a gap that might disrupt the broadcast.
For a devotional-specific rights checklist, see StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist. It is practical guidance, not a substitute for advice about the rights in a particular repertoire.

Choose an Indian VPS for sustained streaming
A continuous encoder sends data outward every second it is streaming. Do not select a VPS based only on its headline monthly price or the word “unmetered.” Read the current transfer allowance, fair-use terms, and any limits on sustained usage before ordering. Provider advertisements describe their own plans; they do not prove that a particular instance will sustain your stream.
Compare the plan on the workload that matters
- Outbound transfer: Estimate usage from the video and audio bitrate you will actually send, then allow for protocol overhead and operational headroom. A useful base calculation is bitrate in bits per second × streaming seconds ÷ 8; convert the resulting bytes into the provider’s stated units. Compare the estimate with the monthly allowance and the policy for sustained traffic.
- CPU: If your source already matches the output and you can stream-copy it, encoding load may be lower than when FFmpeg must transcode in real time. If you transcode, test that exact resolution, frame rate, and encoding settings on the proposed instance.
- RAM and storage: Allow enough disk for the media files, logs, and any backups you need. Check available memory and disk space rather than assuming that a plan marketed for a website will suit a media workload.
- Network route and location: Consider the route from the VPS to YouTube’s ingestion network and the provider’s location. A server in India does not by itself guarantee a good route or uninterrupted delivery.
- Operations and cost: Check restart and backup options, support coverage, taxes, renewal terms, and cancellation terms. Compare the full recurring cost, not just an introductory offer.
There is no universal VPS size established for every FFmpeg devotional stream. The needed resources depend on whether the media is copied or transcoded, the chosen output, and the provider’s actual limits. Test the intended workflow on the plan you expect to use.
Set FFmpeg output for YouTube
Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for the chosen resolution and frame rate. The core settings are constant bitrate (CBR), H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, a two-second keyframe interval, and keyframes no more than four seconds apart. Match bitrate to the selected resolution and frame rate rather than assuming one value fits every stream. Leave network headroom and test with representative motion and audio.

The following is a starting template for one local file, re-encoded as 1080p at 30 frames per second. Select the video bitrate from YouTube’s current recommendation for your intended output, and adjust the output resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval if your target differs. This is a template, not a tested command for every file or VPS.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "/path/to/devotional-video.mp4"
-vf "scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1920:1080:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2"

-b:v VIDEO_BITRATE -minrate VIDEO_BITRATE -maxrate VIDEO_BITRATE -bufsize VIDEO_BUFFER
-g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "${YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL}/${YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY}"
Replace VIDEO_BITRATE and VIDEO_BUFFER with valid FFmpeg values before running the command, such as a bitrate with a k suffix and a buffer size in the same units. Do not paste the literal placeholders. The filter fits the picture inside a 1920×1080 frame and pads where needed; inspect the result if the source has an unusual aspect ratio. The -g 60 values correspond to a two-second interval at 30 fps. If you use another frame rate, calculate the corresponding interval and verify it against YouTube’s current limit.
For stream copying instead of transcoding, remove the video and audio filters and codec options and use -c copy only when the source codecs, pixel format, frame rate, timestamps, and keyframe cadence are suitable for YouTube. Stream copying avoids a new encode, but it cannot correct unsuitable media or impose the encoder settings above. If the input is not compliant, use a real-time transcode and verify the VPS can sustain it.

Looping multiple files
For an ordered playlist, create a UTF-8 text file with one entry per media file, for example:
file '/media/track-01.mp4'
file '/media/track-02.mp4'
file '/media/track-03.mp4'
Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer in place of the single-file input: -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i /path/to/playlist.txt. Then apply the same output settings. Use -safe 0 only for a playlist file you control, and ensure the VPS account running FFmpeg can read every listed path. Test the playlist through multiple transitions; source files that differ in codec, dimensions, frame rate, or timestamps may need preparation or transcoding to behave consistently.

Prefer RTMPS when YouTube offers it for the broadcast. RTMPS is RTMP carried through an SSL connection; YouTube’s guidance specifies its RTMPS endpoint and path, port 443, and the SSL-protected RTMP connection. In the example command, YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL should contain the server URL and path provided by YouTube, and YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY the corresponding key. Keep them out of shell history and logs. A more careful setup stores them in a restricted environment file readable only by the service account; never publish that file or include its contents in a support request.
Run and supervise FFmpeg on the VPS
- Install FFmpeg from a trusted source suitable for your VPS operating system, and confirm that the build includes the codecs and protocols your command needs.
- Place the media, playlist, and restricted credential file in directories readable by a dedicated service account. Avoid running a publicly exposed media process as root.
- Run the command in a test session and watch FFmpeg’s output. Confirm video and audio arrive in YouTube’s preview and that stream health remains acceptable over a sustained test.
- For a persistent deployment, use a process supervisor or service manager such as systemd to start FFmpeg at boot and restart it after a process failure. Keep useful error logs, rotate them, and alert a person if the process exits or YouTube reports unhealthy input.
- Document how an operator can stop the service, rotate the stream key, replace a media file, inspect logs, and restore the stream. Re-test after changing FFmpeg, the VPS plan, the media, or the YouTube broadcast settings.
A supervisor can restart a process; it cannot guarantee YouTube is receiving decodable audio and video, fix an exhausted transfer allowance, or ensure the broadcast reconnects as intended. Monitor both the VPS process and YouTube’s preview or stream health. Do not claim uninterrupted uptime based solely on automatic restarts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a single 24/7 broadcast will produce one complete automatic archive. Decide in advance how you will handle scheduled restarts, the live watch page, viewer notifications, and separate archives. Test the intended restart pattern before relying on it for a continuous channel.

Check copyright, reused content, and monetization separately
Permission to stream is not a promise that YouTube will monetize the channel or treat repeated programming as eligible original content. Monetization depends on current YouTube policies and the actual channel and content; encoder setup alone does not settle eligibility. Review the current monetization and reused-content rules in YouTube’s own guidance before making revenue plans. Keep the rights documentation for each recording and visual available if a claim or dispute arises.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no video | Wrong server URL or key, expired or rotated key, or FFmpeg cannot reach the endpoint. | Copy the exact server URL and key from the active broadcast in Studio, verify the key is current, and inspect FFmpeg’s connection error. If the key was exposed, rotate it. |
| YouTube connects but reports poor stream health | Output settings do not match the selected format, the connection is unstable, or the VPS is overloaded. | Check resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio format against current YouTube recommendations. Review VPS CPU use and network behavior during the stream. |
| FFmpeg exits or the stream stops | Process failure, unavailable input file, storage issue, or network interruption. | Inspect the service status and logs, confirm the input and disk are available, and verify that the supervisor restarts the process. Also check YouTube preview health; a process restart does not prove the broadcast recovered. |
| Playback freezes or has gaps between tracks | Playlist entries may have incompatible timestamps or media properties, or a file may be unreadable. | Test the full playlist through each transition, confirm file permissions and paths, and transcode or prepare inconsistent sources before relying on them live. |
| The VPS provider warns about usage or limits traffic | Continuous outbound streaming exceeded a transfer allowance or triggered fair-use terms. | Compare actual stream bitrate and run time with the plan’s current usage rules. Contact the provider or move to a plan whose written terms fit the sustained workload. |
| A recording receives a copyright claim | The licence may not cover that recording, livestream use, territory, monetization, or Content ID handling. | Check the exact track and rights chain, retrieve the written permission, and follow YouTube’s claim process. Do not assume a traditional melody clears a particular recording. |
