You can run a rain ambience stream from a Raspberry Pi, but first choose what “stream” means: a self-hosted audio radio feed uses Liquidsoap and Icecast to deliver sound to listeners; a YouTube Live broadcast needs an encoder sending audio and video to YouTube. The hardware and setup differ, and neither route is guaranteed to run continuously without testing and maintenance.
Choose an output: internet radio or YouTube Live
| Decision | Self-hosted audio radio | YouTube Live |
|---|---|---|
| What listeners receive | An audio feed at a server mount point, played in a compatible player. | A live audio-and-video broadcast hosted on YouTube. |
| Main components | Liquidsoap generates and encodes audio; Icecast relays it to listeners. | An encoder sends audio and video to YouTube using its server URL and stream key; YouTube’s Live Control Room manages the broadcast. |
| Delivery and bandwidth | Your server and network deliver the feed. Liquidsoap’s guide notes that more connected listeners require more bandwidth. Liquidsoap quick start | YouTube distributes the stream. Your upload connection must sustain the encoder’s selected bitrate. |
| What to verify | Audio source, encoder, server configuration, mount point, firewall and listener access. | Stream key, endpoint, codec and bitrate, preview, and stream health. |
If you want an audio-only station that listeners can open in a player, follow the radio route. If your audience expects a YouTube live page with a rain visual, follow the YouTube route. These are separate designs; an Icecast mount point is not a YouTube broadcast.
Prepare the Raspberry Pi
Choose the board, operating system, and remote access
Use a Pi that can run the software and encoding workload you select; the available guidance does not establish a minimum model for either design. Raspberry Pi OS Lite is the command-line-only option for a headless setup, and Raspberry Pi recommends at least an 8 GB card for it. Configure network access and remote access—SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect—using Raspberry Pi Imager before the first boot. See Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation.
Match the power supply to the exact model
Check the current official guidance for your board and its attached peripherals before buying or setting up a supply. Raspberry Pi’s surfaced recommendations include 5 V at 5 A for Pi 5 and Pi 500 (with peripheral-current limits at 3 A), 5 V at 3 A for Pi 4 Model B and Pi 400, and 5 V at 2.5 A for listed older models including Pi 3 and Zero. The hardware documentation says all models require 5.1 V and notes that consumption varies with peripherals. These are model-specific recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular setup will run continuously. Consult Raspberry Pi hardware documentation.

Decide whether you need a separate audio output
For a software-generated internet radio feed or a YouTube encoder, audio can be handled in the stream without connecting speakers. If you do need physical output, Raspberry Pi documentation lists HDMI and USB across models, Bluetooth where equipped, and a 3.5 mm jack on Pi 1 through Pi 4. That auxiliary jack is line-level and may need amplification. A HAT or USB audio interface is optional; choose one only if the project needs a particular analog or digital output. See the hardware documentation for model-specific options.
Build a self-hosted audio radio feed
The basic design is a local rain-audio file or playlist, an audio generator and encoder, and an Icecast server that exposes a mount point. Liquidsoap describes the flow this way: “Liquidsoap generates and encodes the stream, sends it to an Icecast server, and the Icecast server relays it to all its listeners.” See Liquidsoap’s Icecast and Shoutcast guide and its quick start.

- Choose the audio source. Put the rain recording or playlist somewhere the Pi can access reliably. A local source avoids depending on a separate machine or network location for every playback.
- Configure Liquidsoap. Set the source or playlist, the audio encoding, and the Icecast destination. The exact configuration syntax and package availability depend on the software releases and Raspberry Pi OS version you choose; verify them in the documentation for those releases rather than copying unverified commands.
- Configure Icecast and the mount point. Set the server address, mount point, and listener access. Keep server credentials private; do not put passwords in a public guide or expose them in a shared configuration.
- Make the server reachable to listeners. Check the network route and firewall rules for the server you are actually using. The Icecast feed must be reachable at its intended address and mount point for a listener to connect.
- Test from another device. Open the mount point in a compatible player on a separate device. Confirm that audio starts, continues through playlist transitions, and remains available when the player disconnects and reconnects.
- Check capacity rather than assuming it. Each listener receives the feed from the server, so additional listeners add bandwidth demand. The cited Liquidsoap guide explains this relationship but does not establish a safe audience size for a particular Pi, connection, or configuration; size and test your actual setup.
Broadcast rain ambience to YouTube Live
For YouTube, the Pi must produce an audio-and-video stream and send it to YouTube’s ingestion endpoint. YouTube’s setup guidance uses the Live server URL and stream key in the encoder, followed by the Live Control Room controls. Treat the stream key as a password: keep it private, and reset it if it is exposed. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guide.
- Prepare representative audio and video. Choose the rain ambience recording and the visual you intend to show. Test with the same kind of content and settings you plan to use live.
- Select an encoder mode the Pi and upload line can sustain. For a mostly static rain visual, high resolution or frame rate may add load without serving the content. Choose conservatively, then test the actual Pi, encoder, and network combination. This is practical guidance, not a benchmark for any particular Pi model.
- Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, and advises choosing quality to suit the upload connection, running a speed test, and monitoring stream health and messages. It lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video codecs for RTMP/RTMPS; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant-bitrate encoding. Bitrate recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec, so use the matching row in YouTube’s current encoder settings guide rather than treating one bitrate as universal.
- Enter the YouTube endpoint and key in the encoder. Copy the server URL and stream key from YouTube’s live setup into the matching encoder fields. Verify both before sending; a wrong endpoint or key prevents the broadcast from reaching the intended live event.
- Start sending and check the preview. Follow the encoder and Live Control Room instructions to begin sending, wait for the preview, and check YouTube’s stream-health messages before relying on the broadcast.
- Monitor during the stream. YouTube advises monitoring stream health and messages. Watch for connection or encoding warnings and respond to them rather than assuming that a started encoder means viewers are receiving stable video and audio.
Copyright, archives, and continuous broadcasts
Only use rain recordings and visuals you have the rights to broadcast on YouTube. A recording being described as “rain sounds” or found online does not by itself establish permission. YouTube’s setup page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement is not a promise of one uninterrupted 24/7 archive. Plan for the live broadcast and any recording as separate needs. YouTube’s current settings and process are described in its live-streaming setup guide.

Make continuous operation more resilient
Raspberry Pi’s setup and hardware documentation explain headless configuration, power, audio options, and thermal management, while YouTube advises testing and monitoring broadcasts. They do not certify a Pi model, storage medium, power arrangement, or software configuration for uninterrupted 24/7 rain streaming. Treat reliability as something to engineer and validate, not a published uptime guarantee.
- Configure the relevant service or encoder to restart after a failure, and verify that it actually recovers.
- Keep the audio source available locally where possible, and test what happens when a playlist ends or a file is unavailable.
- Reboot the Pi and test recovery. For a network-dependent broadcast, also simulate a connection interruption and see whether audio or video resumes as intended.
- During a representative run, check power, storage, temperature, and whether the intended listener or YouTube preview still receives sound.
- Keep stream keys, Icecast passwords, and other credentials private; document a safe recovery process if a key or password must be replaced.
Do not infer continuous-operation capability from a short successful test. Validate the exact board, supply, storage, software versions, network, and workload you plan to leave running.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Radio player cannot open the feed | Server reachability, firewall, address, mount point, and Icecast/Liquidsoap connection. | Confirm the server is running and reachable from another device; check the configured mount point and access settings. |
| Radio connects but has no sound | Source file or playlist availability and Liquidsoap’s source/encoding configuration. | Check that the source is present and playable, then inspect the generator and server logs for errors. |
| Some listeners hear dropouts | Server-side bandwidth demand and the actual network path. | Test with the real listener load and connection; do not assume a listener capacity from the Pi model alone. |
| YouTube does not show an incoming stream | Server URL, stream key, encoder connection, and network access. | Compare the endpoint and key with YouTube’s live setup, then check the encoder status and Live Control Room messages. |
| YouTube preview is unstable or reports poor health | Upload capacity and the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. | Run a speed test, choose a sustainable setting from YouTube’s current encoder guide, and test again with representative content. |
| Stream stops after reboot or interruption | Whether the service starts automatically and recovers after the specific failure. | Configure and test restart/recovery behavior; verify the source, credentials, network, and server or YouTube connection after recovery. |
