A YouTube playlist of videos does not broadcast continuously: it organizes published videos, while the encoder sends the live program to YouTube. HLS is an alternative ingestion method for specific workflows, but it requires segmented output and has higher latency.
First, distinguish a YouTube playlist from an HLS playlist
A YouTube video playlist is a collection of published videos that viewers can browse or play in sequence. It is useful for organizing a stream’s eventual archives and highlight clips, but it does not send a continuous live broadcast to your channel. For a live radio stream, an encoder sends audio and video to YouTube Live. You create or schedule the stream in YouTube Live Control Room, then enter its server URL and stream key in the encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains this workflow.
An HLS playlist, by contrast, is a media manifest used by an encoder during live ingestion. It is not a playlist setting for your YouTube channel. The two meanings are easy to confuse, but only the encoder-ingestion workflow carries the live broadcast.
RTMPS or HLS: which should you choose?
| Ingestion method | Best fit | Key requirements and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | Conventional encoder setups using YouTube’s standard supported settings | YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure form of RTMP. It is the practical default for a standard stream. Use a compatible encoder and configure its video, audio, bitrate and keyframe settings. |
| HLS | A compatible encoder workflow that requires HLS, including certain HDR or codec workflows not supported over RTMP | Requires MPEG-TS segments, 1–4 second segment duration, HTTPS POST/PUT, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. HLS does not support byte ranges and has higher latency than RTMP. |
For HLS, follow YouTube’s HLS setup requirements rather than assuming that any generic HLS manifest will work. If you do not have a specific need for HLS and your encoder supports RTMPS, choose RTMPS.

Encoder settings for a standard music-led stream
For a conventional SDR stream, begin with YouTube’s documented encoder guidance: H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe frequency. YouTube’s documented stereo-audio settings include 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 kbps. These are starting points from YouTube’s recommendations, not a guarantee that every encoder preset or production workflow is identical. Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions against your chosen resolution and encoder.
- Create or schedule the live event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Get the server URL and stream key for the encoder. YouTube may require live streaming to be enabled for the channel.
- Set the encoder’s destination. Select YouTube or enter the server URL and stream key supplied for the event. Prefer RTMPS when supported.
- Configure the output. For the conventional SDR profile, use H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval. For stereo audio, YouTube documents 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
- Test before relying on the stream. Send representative audio and motion, check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room, and confirm that the audio is clean and continuous.
- Start the event and monitor it. Watch YouTube’s stream-health information and keep an eye on the encoder and network rather than assuming a successful start guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast.
Do not share the stream key: anyone who has it may be able to send a signal to the event. Keep it in the encoder configuration or another secure place, and regenerate it if it is exposed.

Plan for bandwidth, monitoring and archive behavior
A 24/7 stream is an operating setup, not just a format choice. YouTube recommends keeping upload capacity about 20% above the stream’s bitrate. This margin helps accommodate network variation; it is not a substitute for a stable connection. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Test on the same network and encoder configuration you intend to use, with typical audio and visual content.
- Monitor stream health and confirm the feed is still reaching YouTube after it starts.
- Decide whether viewers should be able to pause or rewind using DVR, and configure live settings accordingly. YouTube documents DVR controls in its live stream settings guidance.
- Make an archive plan. YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The cited guidance does not establish an unlimited duration for one uninterrupted 24/7 event, so verify current event-duration behavior and test any restart and archive workflow before depending on it.
After a live event has produced an archive, ordinary YouTube playlists can group the full program with related broadcasts or separate highlight clips. YouTube’s promotion guidance covers ways to direct viewers to a live stream; it does not turn a video playlist into the live feed.

Music rights are a separate requirement
RTMPS, HLS and encoder settings do not grant permission to broadcast music. Confirm that the rights cover the actual tracks, the intended territories, and the way you plan to use or monetize the stream. A track being available online or included in a personal playlist is not evidence that it is cleared for continuous public broadcast.

Troubleshooting common setup problems
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that the encoder is using the current server URL and stream key for the correct event, that the event is ready to receive an encoder signal, and that the network allows the selected connection.
- The stream health is poor or the feed drops: Check the encoder’s outgoing bitrate and the available upload capacity. YouTube advises 20% upload headroom above the stream bitrate; test on the actual connection and monitor for fluctuations.
- HLS is rejected or behaves incorrectly: Confirm the encoder is producing TS segments, using 1–4 second segments and HTTPS POST/PUT, and keeping no more than five outstanding segments in its rolling playlist. HLS does not support byte ranges.
- The archive is missing or incomplete: Check event duration and archive settings, then test the intended restart process. YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours; the cited instructions do not establish behavior for a single continuous 24/7 event.
- Music is muted, blocked or otherwise restricted: Review the rights and platform notices for the specific tracks and territories. Changing the playlist or ingestion format does not resolve a rights issue.
