There is no universal YouTube setting for a “fallback video.” First decide what should trigger it: an empty slot in a programmed calendar, or a stream that is off air because no encoder or broadcast is connected. Those are different behaviors, and the setup depends on the service.
Choose the fallback trigger before changing settings
A fallback can mean either scheduled filler or off-air playback. A calendar-gap fallback fills time when no programme is scheduled; it does not, by itself, establish that the service will take over if an encoder disconnects. An off-air fallback is intended to play when the service detects no connected encoder or active broadcast. Automatic reconnection after a dropped connection is a third behavior: it may restore a stream, but it does not necessarily select or play a separate standby video.

These terms are not used identically by every provider. Confirm the trigger and what happens when the main programme returns before relying on a fallback.
Set a calendar-gap fallback in playout.video
playout.video documents a calendar workflow in which you can choose what fills unscheduled time. Its documented options are a default playlist, one standby video, or a black slate. These steps concern calendar gaps, not confirmed encoder-failure failover.

- Create a Scheduled Stream.
- Add the video, playlist, or composition blocks you want, and configure their recurrence as needed.
- Open the calendar’s Settings and choose the default playlist, single standby video, or black slate for gaps.
- Add YouTube under Destinations, then select Go Live.
- If you change the fallback while the stream is live, allow for the documented handoff: edits take effect at the next slot transition.
Do not treat this calendar setting as an encoder-loss backup unless the service documents that separate trigger.
Configure an off-air fallback in MediaCP
MediaCP describes a fallback video that loops when no encoder is connected and there is no scheduled content or live broadcast, continuing until the broadcast resumes. Its public feature information does not provide a step-by-step dashboard path, so use MediaCP’s current dashboard or help documentation to locate and configure the control rather than relying on guessed menu names.

MediaCP describes this as a branded waiting experience, not a second live backup feed. Examples of suitable holding content include a short branded loop, welcome slate, event information, or sponsor message. Use only video and audio you have the rights to show.
Test the trigger and the handoff back
Test on an unlisted or private destination, or during a maintenance window, if your service and YouTube setup allow it. YouTube encoder settings such as auto-start and auto-stop are separate from the service’s fallback-media choice.

- For a calendar-gap rule: leave a gap between scheduled blocks and confirm the chosen filler appears.
- For an off-air rule: test with the live source absent and confirm the fallback begins.
- For either rule: restore the main programme and check that it takes over again as expected.
- Watch both views: check the viewer-facing YouTube page as well as the service dashboard.
Do not assume a fallback has worked just because it is selected in a dashboard; verify the actual trigger and return behavior.

- The fallback does not appear during an empty slot: check that the rule is configured in calendar settings and that there is actually a gap between programmed blocks. In playout.video, edits made while live take effect at the next slot transition.
- The video does not start after the encoder disconnects: a calendar-gap setting may not cover encoder loss. Confirm that your provider explicitly supports off-air fallback and test with the live source absent.
- The main programme does not return: verify the provider’s handoff behavior with a controlled test and monitor both its dashboard and the YouTube page.
- You see a slate or waiting video but expect a backup live feed: these are not interchangeable. MediaCP describes its fallback as a branded waiting experience, distinct from a second live feed.
- The video or audio cannot be used: confirm you have the necessary rights. A streaming service’s fallback feature does not grant content rights.
Choose the service by the behavior it documents
Compare the actual trigger, available fallback media, documented return to the main programme, and whether the provider gives a usable setup path. playout.video documents calendar-gap choices; MediaCP documents off-air looping but its public feature page does not give the dashboard path. StreamNeo documents cloud looping and reconnection rather than a separate fallback-video control. These are different documented behaviors, not a performance ranking.
YouTube’s live encoder settings govern encoder-related options such as auto-start and auto-stop; they do not select a service’s fallback media. Whatever service you use, confirm its current instructions and test the trigger you need.
