You can send a Raspberry Pi’s camera, an IP camera, or a media file to YouTube over Wi-Fi with FFmpeg, but there is no single command that works for every source. First identify the input and whether its video and audio can be passed through unchanged or need encoding. Then use the ingest URL and private stream key from YouTube’s Live Control Room, set a format the Pi and network can sustain, and confirm the feed in YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators.

How the stream gets from the Pi to YouTube

The process has four parts: a camera or file supplies audio and video; FFmpeg either copies compatible streams or encodes them; FFmpeg sends the result over the network to YouTube’s ingest endpoint using your stream key; and YouTube reports whether it is receiving a healthy feed. A working network connection by itself does not prove that the codec, audio, resolution, or bitrate is suitable.

The exact input options depend on whether you have a Pi camera, USB camera, RTSP/IP camera, or local file. Your Pi model, operating system, camera software, and FFmpeg build also affect which commands and encoders are available. Treat the command below as a schematic, not a verified ready-to-run recipe.

Choose settings the Pi and Wi-Fi can sustain

YouTube’s H.264 recommendations

YouTube’s current live-encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends the following H.264 video bitrates. These are platform recommendations—not proof that a particular Raspberry Pi can encode at that rate or that a Wi-Fi connection can sustain it.

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

YouTube also recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (four seconds maximum), AAC or MP3 audio, and, for stereo, 128 Kbps audio at a 44.1 kHz sample rate. It lists RTMP and RTMPS for encoder streaming and recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP. Prefer RTMPS when the endpoint YouTube provides and your FFmpeg build support it. YouTube may update its guidance, so check its live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions before an important stream.

Test the real upstream connection

A speed-test peak is not a reliable measure of what the Pi can continuously upload from its actual location. YouTube says, “Make sure your outbound connection is enough to send your stream bitrate.” Test over the same Wi-Fi route and band you will use for the stream, allow headroom for audio and bitrate variation, and run a representative rehearsal with both movement and sound. Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Prepare the Pi, source, and YouTube stream

  1. Identify the input. Decide whether FFmpeg will receive a Pi camera, a USB camera, an RTSP/IP camera, or a media file. Confirm that an audio track is available or plan how to provide one; do not assume a silent video will behave as you expect in every configuration.
  2. Record your software and hardware details. Note the exact Pi model, Raspberry Pi OS version, camera software, and output of ffmpeg -version. Check that the installed FFmpeg build supports the required input, output protocol, and—if you must encode—the encoder you intend to use. Raspberry Pi’s Picamera2 manual documents H.264 encoding and bitrate controls; that does not establish real-time performance on a particular board.
  3. Create or select the encoder stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Copy the stream URL and key shown for that stream. Start with automatic resolution detection unless you deliberately need a custom key or settings workflow. YouTube describes a stream key as password-like: keep it private and reset it if it is compromised. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and its stream-settings guidance.
  4. Decide whether to copy or encode. If the source already produces compatible H.264 video and AAC audio with parameters that fit your target, try stream-copying first. Copying avoids the Pi’s video re-encoding work. If the source needs conversion, choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate based on what that particular Pi can sustain and YouTube’s current settings.
  5. Check the source independently. Before publishing, verify that the selected camera or file produces the expected video and audio. For a network camera, confirm that the Pi can reach its RTSP/IP address; a timeout could be caused by the camera-side link rather than the outbound connection to YouTube.

Build the FFmpeg publish command

FFmpeg documents RTMP as media streaming over TCP/IP and describes its protocol URL and options in the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation. A generic command shape is:

ffmpeg [input options] -i [encode or stream-copy options]
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv '[YouTube-provided ingest URL plus private stream key]'

Replace the bracketed parts with options for your actual source and the endpoint and key from your own Live Control Room. Do not share a populated command, terminal capture, or log containing your real key. This template does not establish the right input syntax, codecs, container, timestamps, audio handling, or endpoint for your setup. Confirm each against the input and current YouTube settings; do not copy dated example endpoints from old posts.

Choose the right input path

  • Pi camera: A Pi camera workflow may use Picamera2 to capture and encode before FFmpeg publishes. If you pipe camera output into FFmpeg, the processes must agree on how the pipe is framed, and you must establish which process supplies audio. The Picamera2 documentation covers H.264 encoding and bitrate controls but does not provide a universal publishing command.
  • USB camera: The FFmpeg input options depend on the device interface and OS configuration. Check what the installed build can read and confirm that both the camera and any separate audio source appear as expected before adding the YouTube output.
  • RTSP/IP camera: The camera may already produce H.264. If its video is compatible with YouTube and your target settings, stream-copying can reduce Pi CPU load; check audio separately, since the camera’s audio codec may need conversion.
  • Media file: Use the file as the input and verify that it contains the intended audio and video streams. A file’s existing codec and parameters determine whether copying is appropriate or conversion is needed.

Copy or encode?

Stream-copying avoids video re-encoding, but only works when the source stream and its parameters fit the chosen output and YouTube’s requirements. Encoding gives you a way to change resolution, frame rate, codec, or bitrate, but it adds work the Pi must sustain continuously. Encoder support and performance depend on the Pi, software, and FFmpeg build; do not infer capability from a different model or an old example.

For a simple target, YouTube’s current guidance includes H.264 video and AAC audio. The H.264 bitrate table above gives starting recommendations, not a promise that your source, encoder, or Wi-Fi can handle them. Set keyframes about every two seconds and use CBR where your encoder supports those controls.

Rehearse and verify reception

  1. Start FFmpeg with the input and output you intend to use, keeping the stream key private.
  2. Check FFmpeg’s output for the expected input streams and for signs that encoding or publishing is falling behind.
  3. Open the stream preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Confirm that the picture and audio arrive as intended and review YouTube’s stream-health messages.
  4. Run a representative test with the planned movement and sound, from the Pi’s actual Wi-Fi location. YouTube’s advice is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
  5. If YouTube reports problems or the feed drops, reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a level your observed connection and Pi can sustain, then repeat the test.

Troubleshoot by layer

Symptom Check Next step
No expected local video or audio Input device, file, or camera URL; FFmpeg’s reported input streams Fix the input path or device access first. Confirm that the source supplies the tracks you expect.
FFmpeg connects but the feed is unhealthy or unsuitable Codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio Compare them with YouTube’s current encoder guidance. A successful connection alone does not confirm compatible or suitable media.
Encoding falls behind or the Pi struggles Whether FFmpeg is re-encoding, and whether the selected settings can be sustained by this Pi Try stream-copying if the source is already compatible, or lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate. Encoder performance varies by board and build.
Drops, interruptions, or stream-health warnings Upstream capacity and Wi-Fi stability at the Pi’s actual location Repeat a representative test; allow headroom and reduce the stream bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. An Ethernet comparison can help isolate Wi-Fi as a cause if Ethernet is available.
Connection timeout Reachability of the camera/source and outbound access to YouTube Test each link separately rather than assuming the camera-side network or YouTube-side connection is at fault.
Unexpected connection or key failure The exact ingest URL and key for the selected Live Control Room stream Copy the current values again and confirm the stream setup. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
