To stream a prerecorded 1080p video from a VPS to YouTube Live, create a YouTube live stream, protect its stream key, and run FFmpeg with an RTMPS output. For 1080p at 30 fps, YouTube recommends H.264 video at 10 Mbps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. The command below is a starting template—not a tested VPS configuration—so verify that your server can encode and sustain the stream before going live.
What you need before configuring FFmpeg
- A VPS with the video file available locally or at a path FFmpeg can read.
- FFmpeg built with the required H.264 encoder, AAC audio encoder, FLV muxer, and RTMPS protocol support.
- A YouTube live stream, its server URL, and its stream key from Live Control Room.
- Sustained VPS outbound bandwidth above the combined video, audio, and protocol bitrate, with headroom.
The VPS is the machine running FFmpeg; it does not guarantee a particular CPU allocation, egress rate, or successful 1080p encoding. Those depend on the host, instance, workload, and installed build, so test your own setup.
Set up the YouTube stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create a live stream and retrieve its stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder workflow is documented in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Use the RTMPS server URL and append the key as shown in the command below. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data into and through Google’s servers.
- Treat the key as a password. Do not commit it to source control, paste it into public examples, or expose it in screenshots or logs. For production, inject it through a secret store or a service manager’s protected environment rather than embedding it in a script.
- If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room; see YouTube’s Manage live stream settings.
Choose 1080p bitrate, frame rate, and keyframes
YouTube’s live-encoder settings page lists these H.264 live-ingest figures. They are not YouTube’s separate recommendations for uploaded videos.
| Output | Recommended video bitrate | Listed minimum video bitrate | Keyframe interval |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 5 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
YouTube lists the same recommended 1080p30 and 1080p60 bitrates for AV1 and H.265 (HEVC) as for H.264. This example uses H.264 because it is the selected encoder in the command; confirm codec and protocol support in your FFmpeg build before choosing another format.

Run the 1080p30 H.264 command
This illustrative template takes a prerecorded file as input and targets 1080p at 30 fps. Replace the input path and supply the key securely. It is not a claim of tested performance on any particular VPS.
ffmpeg -re -i /path/to/input.mp4
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
-vf "scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1920:1080:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2,setsar=1,fps=30"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-b:v 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/${YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY}"
What the main settings do
-rereads a prerecorded file in real time at its native rate. It is not a universal switch for camera or other live-capture inputs.-map 0:v:0selects the first video stream.-map 0:a:0?selects the first audio stream when one exists; the optional map prevents an error if the file has no audio, but decide deliberately how a silent source should sound on stream.- The scale-and-pad filter creates a 1920Ă—1080 canvas while preserving the source aspect ratio; it adds bars when the source shape differs. Remove or adapt it if the input is already correctly framed.
fps=30sets the output frame rate.-b:v 10Msets the target video bitrate;-maxrate 10Mlimits peaks near that target.-bufsize 20Mrepresents a two-second video buffer at 10 Mbps. These buffer and preset values are practical starting choices, not YouTube requirements; verify their behavior for the installed encoder.-g 60and-keyint_min 60specify a 60-frame GOP at 30 fps, equivalent to two seconds.-sc_threshold 0disables scene-change keyframe insertion so the GOP interval remains predictable.-preset veryfastis a starting point, not a guarantee. Watch CPU load and encoding speed before trying a slower preset or available hardware encoding.- The audio options select AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. Adapt mapping and audio behavior if the file has multiple tracks or no intended audio.
Use 1080p60 when the source and VPS can sustain it
For a genuine 1080p60 output, change fps=30 to fps=60, set -b:v 12M -maxrate 12M, and use a 120-frame GOP: -g 120 -keyint_min 120. YouTube’s listed H.264 recommendation for 1080p60 is 12 Mbps, compared with 10 Mbps for 1080p30. Higher frame rate also increases encoding work; do not assume a VPS can keep up without testing.

Adapt the template to other sources
The command above is for a prerecorded file. A camera, desktop capture, playlist, or network feed needs a source-specific FFmpeg input section. Device names, input formats, and capture options depend on the VPS operating system and available devices; do not copy the file-input flags blindly. Likewise, adapt stream mapping and filters for multiple tracks, subtitles, or generated video. Keep the output settings aligned with the real input and verify the resulting resolution and frame rate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test bandwidth and stream health before going live
- Check sustained outbound capacity to the YouTube ingest endpoint, not just an advertised VPS port speed. Total stream bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth; audio and protocol overhead also use capacity. Keep headroom.
- Run a representative test with the intended audio and video movement, and check FFmpeg’s encoding speed, CPU load, dropped frames, and connection messages.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and any warnings while the test is running. YouTube Help says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and Streaming tips.
- Confirm the output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate before the event. If the VPS cannot encode in real time or sustain the target rate, reduce frame rate or bitrate and test again; do not label a lower-resolution output as 1080p.
Troubleshoot common FFmpeg-to-YouTube failures
| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a stream | Check the RTMPS server URL and stream key first. Confirm the key is current and the VPS can reach the ingest endpoint. |
| FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder, muxer, or protocol | Check ffmpeg -encoders, ffmpeg -muxers, and ffmpeg -protocols. Install or build an FFmpeg version with the required support, or choose a supported alternative. |
| Encoding is slower than real time or frames drop | Inspect CPU use, FFmpeg speed output, and host throttling. Try a faster preset or reduce frame rate/bitrate, then repeat the test. Hardware encoding is only an option if the VPS exposes compatible hardware and the build supports it. |
| Connection errors or unstable stream health | Verify sustained egress rather than relying on advertised port speed. Allow bandwidth headroom for audio and protocol overhead, then check YouTube’s stream-health messages. |
| Output is not actually 1080p or has unexpected bars | Check the source dimensions and the scale/pad filter. The filter creates a 1920Ă—1080 canvas while preserving aspect ratio, so bars can be expected when the input shape differs. |
| Stream has no sound | Check whether the input has an audio stream and whether -map 0:a:0? selects the intended track. The optional mapping avoids failure for silent files; it does not create audio. |
Or let it run in the cloud
