Raspberry Pi 5 vs VPS for a 24/7 FFmpeg YouTube Playlist Stream

A Pi 5 can run an FFmpeg playlist stream, but software encoding and home-network dependence matter. Compare it with a VPS and check YouTube's ingest and archive limits.

Short answer: A Raspberry Pi 5 can run a 24/7 FFmpeg playlist stream, but it is not automatically the better choice just because the hardware is small. It uses software video encoders, so encoding or transcoding continuously must be tested on the actual board. A VPS removes the dependence on home power and broadband, but its cost, transfer allowance, and reliability depend on the provider and plan. If your priority is to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube without maintaining a computer at home or a VPS, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.

Which should you choose?

Choose a Raspberry Pi 5 when you already have suitable hardware, can provide stable home upload and power, and can validate the exact FFmpeg workload before relying on it. Choose a VPS when you want the stream process hosted away from home and have checked the plan’s sustained outbound transfer, overage terms, and operating requirements. Neither option is proven universally cheaper or more reliable without a specific Pi setup and VPS plan to compare.

For a prerecorded playlist, the central technical distinction is whether FFmpeg must encode video. Raspberry Pi says the Pi 5 uses software video encoders. If the source files already match YouTube’s ingest requirements and FFmpeg can pass the video through without filters or transcoding, the processing demand may be lower; that is an engineering inference, not a benchmark for this workload. Verify codecs, timestamps, and the actual outgoing stream.

Factor Raspberry Pi 5 at home VPS
Video processing Software video encoding. Test the actual resolution, frame rate, codec, and FFmpeg command if encoding or transcoding is needed. Depends on the selected virtual CPU and any hardware acceleration offered; no specific plan or capability is established here.
Network path Uses home internet and local networking. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom. Depends on provider networking and included outbound transfer; check overage terms.
Continuity Depends on home power, router, ISP, hardware, and your crash or outage recovery setup. Depends on the provider, instance configuration, and your process monitoring and restart setup. No provider uptime claim is established here.
Cost Depends on whether the Pi is already owned, electricity rate, accessories, storage, and replacement needs. Depends on the current plan price, included transfer, overages, and storage. No specific plan was selected.
Operations You maintain the hardware, operating system, cooling, storage, network, and recovery. You maintain the operating system and streaming process; the provider supplies the virtual machine and network service.
YouTube archive YouTube’s archive behavior is the same regardless of where FFmpeg runs. YouTube’s archive behavior is the same regardless of where FFmpeg runs.

What a Pi 5 can—and cannot—tell you about performance

Raspberry Pi documentation lists Pi 5 configurations with 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB, or 16 GB of memory, Gigabit Ethernet, microSD storage, and USB-C power input. It recommends the Raspberry Pi 27 W USB-C power supply. With a 3 A supply, USB peripherals are limited to 600 mA; with a 5 A supply, the board can provide up to 1.6 A to downstream USB peripherals. The documented 800 mA typical active current is for a bare board, not a measured FFmpeg streaming workload, so it is not enough to calculate this setup’s running cost.

The Pi 5 does not have a dedicated hardware video encoder, according to Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation. That matters if FFmpeg needs to encode a video stream in real time. It does not by itself establish whether a particular playlist can be streamed successfully: source format, filters, output profile, cooling, and the exact FFmpeg build and command all matter. Test the workload on the board before making it the sole source of a continuous broadcast.

Set YouTube ingest settings before comparing machines

The same output requirements apply whether FFmpeg runs on a Pi or VPS. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video options, sets a frame-rate ceiling of 60 fps, recommends a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds), and recommends constant bitrate (CBR). Match the codec and bitrate to the source and encoder you actually use.

Example profile in YouTube guidance Recommended video bitrate
H.264, 1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
AV1 or H.265, 1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
H.264, 720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
AV1 or H.265, 720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps

These are YouTube’s recommended values for the stated profiles, not a guarantee of stream stability or proof that a specific Pi can encode them. Check YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrates before configuring a broadcast; platform recommendations can change.

Measure the upload path, not just the download speed

YouTube says the total outgoing bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. For one 14 Mbps stream, applying that headroom implies at least 16.8 Mbps of available upload (14 Mbps Ă· 0.8); this is arithmetic using YouTube’s recommendation, not a separate performance threshold. Measure upload under realistic conditions, including other household or server traffic. A high download result does not establish adequate upload capacity.

YouTube also recommends a reliable network because disruptions can break a stream. The Pi depends on home broadband, router, and power. A VPS depends on the provider’s network and the plan’s transfer allowance. For either, account for bitrate multiplied by streaming time when checking outbound data limits; a plan’s monthly quota and overage policy matter for a continuous broadcast.

What a 24/7 broadcast means for archives

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not treat a single uninterrupted 24-hour stream as a guaranteed complete YouTube archive. If you need a copy, arrange a separate recording workflow and monitor storage use, file rotation, and recovery. Any decision to segment or restart the broadcast should be tested against your channel’s programming and archive needs; no universal restart interval is established.

Practical setup and reliability checks

For a Raspberry Pi 5

  • Confirm the source files’ video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, and timestamps. Decide whether the workflow can pass them through or needs encoding, filters, or transcoding.
  • Test the intended FFmpeg command and YouTube output profile on the actual board for sustained operation. Monitor stream health, system temperature, and resource use rather than assuming a short launch test proves 24/7 suitability.
  • Use wired networking where practical and measure stable upload capacity against the full outgoing bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended headroom.
  • Plan for power, router, ISP, storage, cooling, process restarts, and recovery after a crash or outage. A local machine cannot keep streaming through a home power or internet failure.
  • Use an appropriate power supply for the board and attached USB devices; Raspberry Pi recommends its 27 W USB-C supply.

For a VPS

  • Choose a concrete provider and plan, then verify sustained outbound transfer, monthly quota, overage pricing, network terms, storage, and current price.
  • Check the virtual CPU and whether the plan offers hardware acceleration before assuming it can encode the chosen profile. Without a tested plan, encoding capacity is unknown.
  • Configure the FFmpeg process to start after reboot and use monitoring and restart handling. A hosted virtual machine still needs process-level operations; do not infer a provider uptime guarantee from the fact that it is a VPS.
  • Test the complete stream and watch YouTube’s stream health and messages before relying on it for scheduled programming.

For either route

  • Use RTMPS where supported, a compatible codec and bitrate, CBR, and the recommended keyframe interval.
  • Keep the stream key private. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio rather than leaving a compromised key in a command, script, or public log.
  • Use only video and audio you have rights to stream. A playlist’s availability as a file does not grant permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s copyright rules apply whether the source is a Pi, VPS, or cloud service.
  • Review YouTube’s live encoder guidance and stream health recommendations when preparing the ingest configuration.

Common problems and what to check

Symptom Likely area to investigate Action
Stream drops or reports poor connection Upload bandwidth, competing traffic, Wi-Fi or router instability, provider networking, or bitrate beyond available capacity. Measure upload under load, restore the 20% headroom, check network stability, and review YouTube stream-health messages.
Encoding cannot sustain the selected profile on a Pi Software encoding workload exceeds what the tested setup can handle. Confirm whether re-encoding is necessary; if it is, test a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and validate the result before going live.
VPS stream stops after reboot or process failure FFmpeg is not configured to restart, or monitoring does not detect failure. Set up and test startup, restart, and alerting behavior on the selected VPS rather than assuming it is automatic.
Playlist output glitches or loses synchronization Source codec compatibility, timestamps, stream-copy suitability, or playlist transitions. Inspect the files and test transitions and timestamps in the actual output path; re-encoding may be needed if the sources are not compatible.
A full 24-hour archive is missing YouTube may not capture streams exceeding 12 hours. Use a separate recording workflow if a complete archive is required, and monitor its storage and rotation.

Cost: compare the whole operating setup

A Pi’s relevant costs include hardware if not already owned, an appropriate power supply, storage, electricity, cooling or replacement needs, and the value of maintaining the home network and recovery path. A VPS’s relevant costs include the selected monthly plan, outbound transfer and overages, storage, and the time required to configure and monitor the process. Because no local electricity rate or VPS plan is specified, a defensible numerical lifetime-cost comparison is not available.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos or playlists, not a camera feed. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot without re-encoding or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. The first day is free with no card, with day, week, month, six-month, and yearly billing options; UPI and cards are accepted in India, while card checkout is available worldwide.
