India is on YouTube’s list of locations where eligible creators can offer channel memberships. So a missing Join button does not, by itself, mean memberships are unavailable in India. The cause may be the creator’s eligibility or settings, the viewer’s account or location, the app or device, or the particular video page.
First, work out whether the issue is on the creator or viewer side
If you own the channel, start in YouTube Studio and check whether memberships are available and switched on. If you are trying to join someone else’s channel, test the channel homepage and another device before concluding that the channel does not offer memberships. Creator eligibility and viewer access are separate: an eligible creator in India does not guarantee that every viewer, device, or watch page will show the button.
If you are the creator: check Studio eligibility and setup
- Open the Memberships area: on a computer, go to YouTube Studio > Earn > Memberships. YouTube says the Memberships tab appears only when the channel is eligible. If you are eligible, complete the setup and accept the Commerce Product Module when prompted.
- Check the channel’s full eligibility, not just its country: the channel must meet YouTube’s requirements for fan-funding features, be in an available location, and comply with the relevant terms. Being based in India is not enough on its own.
- Review audience and video status: a channel set as Made for Kids, or one with a significant number of Made for Kids or otherwise ineligible videos, may not qualify. YouTube identifies videos with music claims among ineligible videos and notes that some music channels may be excluded.
- Confirm memberships are turned on: eligibility and setup are not the same as activation. YouTube lists not turning on memberships as a reason viewers may not see Join.
- Allow for the review after YouTube Partner Programme acceptance: activation may not be immediate. YouTube says its review against membership eligibility criteria can take up to two days after acceptance into the programme.
If the Memberships tab is absent, YouTube’s stated behavior is that it appears only for eligible channels. Check the channel’s eligibility and policy status rather than assuming India is unsupported.
If you are a viewer: check the channel page, device, and account
- Visit the creator’s channel homepage. Join may not appear on every watch page. YouTube gives videos claimed by certain music partners as an example of pages where joining may be unavailable.
- Try the direct membership path: add
/jointo the end of the creator’s channel URL. This is an alternative route, not a guarantee that you can join; the channel and your account must still be eligible. - Try a computer if you are using an app or a particular watch page. YouTube identifies platform availability as a possible reason for a missing button and suggests joining on a computer as an alternative.
- Check your own purchase eligibility: you must be at least 18 and signed in to a Google Account. The creator’s availability in India does not establish that every viewer’s location or account is eligible.
- If YouTube says “We couldn’t verify your country,” try another network or device, or the YouTube mobile app. If you use a VPN or proxy, consult that service’s instructions for turning it off.
Use the result to narrow down the cause
- Creator cannot see Memberships in Studio: investigate channel eligibility, content status, and policy requirements.
- Creator can see the feature, but viewers cannot: confirm memberships are switched on, then have viewers test the channel homepage or
/join. - Join is missing only on one video or device: try another watch page or a computer; the button is not necessarily available on every page or platform.
- Only a particular viewer has trouble: check that viewer’s signed-in status, age, location eligibility, and any country-verification message.
These checks isolate likely causes, but they cannot establish the status of a particular channel or account without its Studio status and the viewer’s circumstances.
