You can run a radio-style YouTube stream continuously from Kerala by sending audio (and, if desired, visuals) from a software or hardware encoder to a stream created in YouTube Studio. Before choosing equipment, decide whether the station is music-only, host-led, or a mix: a host-led show may need a microphone and mixer, while automated music playback does not require a camera or microphone. For any music format, clear the rights for the recordings and underlying works before you broadcast; being unmonetized does not by itself establish that you have permission.
The technical steps are the same in Kerala as elsewhere. The India-specific work is confirming that the music permissions cover your actual YouTube use, territories, archives, and monetization, rather than assuming a terrestrial radio licence is enough.
What you need before going live
Prepare the YouTube channel
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. If this is the channel’s first time going live, activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well ahead of a launch. YouTube’s current guidance is in its Help article “Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.”
Choose the programme format and source
- Music-only: Use a dependable audio playback source and encoder. Static artwork can accompany the audio; a camera and microphone are not necessary for playback.
- Host-led or mixed: Add a microphone and, if your setup needs one, a mixer or audio interface. A USB microphone is one possible option for speech, interviews, or announcements, not a requirement for music-only playback.
- Continuous visuals: Decide whether you will use static artwork, a visual loop, or a live camera. A camera-led broadcast has different equipment and monitoring needs from an audio stream with artwork.
YouTube supports software and hardware encoders. The platform does not require a particular paid encoder.

Plan a stable internet and power setup
Use a stable connection with enough upload capacity for the selected stream bitrate. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload bandwidth headroom above the stream bitrate. If you plan to use a backup encoder at the same time, allow for its additional bandwidth too. Test on the actual connection and equipment you intend to use; advertised broadband speed alone does not show how the connection will behave overnight.
Plan for local power or internet outages, encoder restarts, and someone able to check the stream. YouTube recommends testing, reliable connectivity, and backup encoder failover as reliability measures; these reduce risk but do not guarantee uninterrupted service.

How to stream radio live on YouTube 24/7
- Verify eligibility and enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, confirm the channel is verified and eligible, then enable live streaming. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Set up a continuous programme source. Prepare the audio playback or host-and-audio setup in the encoder you have chosen. Add artwork or a camera feed only if the programme needs it. Check that playback can continue without someone manually advancing every track or segment.
- Create the stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into the corresponding encoder fields. Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, show it on screen, or send it to people who do not need it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the new key.
- Set and test encoder output. YouTube’s encoder specifications recommend RTMP or RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. Use only settings supported by your encoder and connection. Choose a resolution and bitrate your upload can sustain rather than pushing for the highest available quality.
- Check the preview before making the stream public. Start the encoder and inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream health. Listen for clean, continuous audio; check that visuals are present if used; and confirm the encoder is sending to the intended stream. Test at the bitrate and on the network planned for the live broadcast.
- Set up overnight recovery and monitoring. Decide who will respond if the encoder stops, the power fails, the connection drops, or YouTube ends the stream. Keep recovery instructions available, and consider a backup encoder or connection where practical. Do not treat a 24/7 stream as unattended simply because it starts successfully.
- Choose how to handle recordings. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Do not rely on one 24-hour broadcast as your archive. If keeping a recording matters, arrange a local recording or plan separate sessions, while considering how session breaks affect the viewer experience.
Clear music rights before broadcasting
Check both the recording and the underlying work
In India, music rights may involve more than one permission. IPRS describes licensing for musical and literary works in its repertoire, while PPL India describes licensing for sound recordings in its repertoire. A recording and its underlying composition or lyrics can have different rights holders or licensing routes. Confirm which rights apply to each track you intend to use and get written terms for the specific online YouTube use.
Confirm the scope of permission
For every recording and underlying work, ask the relevant rights holders whether the permission covers your intended territory or territories, a YouTube livestream, monetization, and any archive or replay. Do not assume that a licence for terrestrial FM or community radio automatically covers an internet stream. The available licensing descriptions do not establish which permission covers a particular channel or playlist; that depends on the recordings, works, ownership, territory, and intended use.

YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the broadcaster to have the necessary rights for use of live content on Google services, including music licensing rights. A stream can be interrupted or terminated when YouTube detects third-party content. YouTube also says an archived broadcast may receive a Content ID claim after the stream ends. If you have licensed third-party music, ask the relevant rights holder about allowlisting your channel, which can help avoid interruptions for licensed content.
Keep a track-by-track record of what you cleared, the rights holder or licensing body, permitted uses, territories, dates, and any channel allowlisting. If you cannot confirm the rights for a track, leave it out until you have written confirmation. Whether a separate Kerala-specific regulatory obligation applies depends on the operator and activity; the YouTube and music-licensing guidance described here does not settle that question. YouTube’s terms also require compliance with applicable regulatory obligations.

Troubleshooting a 24/7 radio stream
- Live streaming is not available in Studio: Check channel verification and any live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. For first-time activation, allow up to 24 hours after enabling the feature.
- The encoder will not connect: Recheck that the stream URL and key are copied into the correct encoder fields and belong to the stream you created. Confirm the key has not been reset, and use RTMPS if supported by your encoder.
- The preview buffers or stream health is poor: Check actual upload performance and reduce the bitrate or output demands until the stream fits within available bandwidth with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Check for other traffic using the connection.
- Audio stops or becomes uneven: Check that the playback source has not reached the end of its queue, that the encoder still receives audio, and that local power or audio connections have not failed. Listen to the Live Control Room preview rather than relying only on encoder status.
- YouTube interrupts the broadcast: Check for a copyright or Content ID notice and contact the relevant rights holder if the content was licensed. Confirm that the permission covers the online stream and ask about channel allowlisting.
- The 24-hour broadcast is missing from the channel archive: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Use a local recording or separate sessions if you need an archive; do not count on a single all-day stream being saved.
- The stream stops overnight: Check power, internet stability, encoder status, and whether a person or backup system can restart it. A recovery plan and monitoring are necessary because connectivity and failover practices cannot promise uninterrupted uptime.
Costs and practical trade-offs
A local encoder uses a computer or hardware encoder, local electricity, and the internet connection at the station. It gives you direct control of playback and production, but depends on the local device and network staying available and on someone being able to recover failures. A cloud service removes the need to keep a home computer running, but it does not remove the need to clear music rights, monitor the YouTube channel, or plan for broadcast interruptions. Compare the actual costs and workflow for your setup rather than assuming that a cloud or local option is always cheaper.
