Neither ads nor memberships reliably earn more for every always-on YouTube channel. Ad revenue depends on which viewers are eligible and whether YouTube actually serves ads; membership revenue depends on how many viewers join, the prices and perks offered, and how long members stay. Compare your channel’s creator revenue from the same dates—not advertiser CPM against membership receipts—and normalize it by live hours or a consistent audience measure.
How live-stream ads earn revenue
When monetization is enabled for a live stream, YouTube automatically turns on pre-roll and display ads. Creators can also use automatic or manual mid-roll ads. Automatic mid-roll settings include low, medium, and high frequency; YouTube describes these as corresponding to lower, medium, and higher earnings potential. Manual and scheduled placements are available, with scheduled intervals of 6, 12, 18, 24, or 30 minutes. YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance explains the available controls.
An ad slot does not guarantee an ad will appear. YouTube’s systems choose which slots receive ads, taking into account viewer experience, creator earnings, and advertiser value. Delivery and revenue can vary with audience geography, advertiser demand, settings, and actual viewing. Ads are turned off when a live player is embedded on an external site with auto-start.
YouTube reported that channels with automatic live mid-roll ads enabled had, on average, over 20% higher in-stream ad revenue per hour than channels without that setting, averaged across 207 countries in January 2024. This is a platform-reported comparison of mid-roll settings—not an ads-versus-memberships comparison or a forecast for an individual channel.

To inspect live ad revenue, use YouTube Analytics’ Live filter and distinguish live streams from live replays where the reporting allows it. The live-stream monetization help page describes this breakdown.
How channel memberships earn revenue
Memberships are recurring monthly payments from viewers who choose to join in exchange for creator-defined perks. Examples include members-only badges and emojis. The number of paying members, tier prices, cancellations, and the cost and effort of delivering perks all affect what memberships contribute. YouTube’s live creator guidance notes that memberships can suit a small but passionate niche community; that is general platform guidance, not a promise of earnings.

To receive fan-funding revenue, creators need to accept the applicable Commerce Product Module and enable the individual features they intend to use. See YouTube’s monetization setup guidance.
Why revenue-share percentages do not settle the comparison
YouTube’s partner earnings guidance states a 55% share of net Watch Page ad revenue under the Watch Page Monetization Module, and a 70% share of net revenue from memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks under the Commerce Product Module. These percentages apply to different revenue bases; the larger share does not establish which feature will bring a channel more money. The terms are set out in YouTube’s partner earnings overview.

Use creator-focused revenue, not an advertiser’s gross ad-spend metric. CPM is an advertiser-focused ad metric before YouTube’s share. RPM is creator-focused and reported after revenue share, but it can combine several revenue sources—including ads, YouTube Premium, memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers. For a fair comparison, isolate live ad revenue with the Live analytics filter rather than treating a blended RPM as live ad earnings. YouTube explains these measures in its ad revenue analytics guide.
YouTube also cautions that partner earnings are not guaranteed: “There are no guarantees under the YouTube partner agreement about how much or whether you’ll be paid.”

How to find which one earns more on your channel
- Choose one reporting period. Use the same start and end dates for live ad revenue and membership revenue. A longer period can help smooth day-to-day variation in ad delivery.
- Record live ad revenue. In YouTube Analytics, use the Live filter and the available stream-versus-replay breakdown. Keep the live ad component separate from any blended revenue measure.
- Record membership revenue for those dates. Use the creator revenue reflected in your own reporting, accounting for the relevant platform share and any applicable transaction or tax treatment. Do not compare gross member payments with net ad revenue.
- Compare totals, then normalize. First compare creator revenue over the full period. Then calculate revenue per live hour. If you have consistent live unique-viewer or watch-time data, compare revenue per 1,000 live viewers or per 1,000 watch hours as well.
- Account for costs and sustainability. Track membership cancellations and the time or expense required to provide perks. Separately consider how ad frequency affects the viewing experience. Recurring payments are not the same as profit.
These measures answer different questions: total revenue shows what each source contributed, while revenue per hour or audience unit helps compare periods with different streaming schedules or viewership. Revisit the comparison when audience size, geography, schedule, ad inventory, or the membership offer changes.

- Ad delivery and audience: eligible viewers and slots that actually receive ads affect ad revenue; delivery is not guaranteed.
- Member count and retention: the number of paying members, tier prices, and how long people remain subscribed shape membership receipts.
- Viewer experience and workload: mid-roll frequency can interrupt viewing, while member perks require ongoing delivery.
- Measurement: the comparison can be misleading if dates, revenue bases, live hours, or audience measures do not match.
