For a mostly one-way internet radio simulcast, start with Normal latency in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. YouTube describes it as the best fit for non-interactive streams, with the lowest viewer buffering. Choose Low or Ultra-low only when faster interaction with listeners matters more than the added risk of buffering; neither mode supports 4K.
What latency setting should an internet radio station use?
Latency is the delay between capturing and encoding a broadcast and its display to viewers. A continuous music or talk-radio feed usually does not need near-real-time replies, so Normal latency is a practical starting point. YouTube says it supports all resolutions and live features and provides the lowest amount of viewer buffering among the three choices. YouTube’s latency guidance frames Normal for broadcasts without audience interaction.
There is no universal setting for every station. Choose based on how much live exchange the programme needs, the desired resolution, the ingestion protocol, and the reliability of the encoder’s upload connection.
Compare YouTube’s latency options
| Setting | YouTube’s stated use | What viewers may experience | Fit for a radio station |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | Non-interactive broadcasts | Lowest buffering exposure of the options; all resolutions and live features are supported | Best starting point for continuous listening or occasional chat that need not be answered immediately |
| Low | Limited interaction, such as polls where a response need not be immediate | YouTube says most viewers experience latency under 10 seconds. The smaller playback buffer increases buffering exposure compared with Normal. | Consider when a host or programme has useful, but not instantaneous, audience interaction |
| Ultra-low | Real-time conversation with viewers | YouTube says most viewers experience latency under five seconds. The smaller buffer brings greater buffering risk. | Consider only when hosts actively respond to chat and the stream can be delivered reliably |
The under-10-second and under-five-second figures are YouTube’s approximate guidance for most viewers, not guarantees for an individual viewer or network. Congestion and other delivery conditions can add delay even when the encoder’s average bitrate is within the connection’s capacity.

How to change latency in YouTube Studio
The choice is available for encoder-based streams. YouTube says webcam and mobile streams are set up for interactivity and do not expose this latency choice.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room for the scheduled or current encoder stream.
- Open the stream’s settings and find the latency option.
- Select Normal, Low, or Ultra-low according to the programme’s interaction needs and resolution requirements.
- Save or apply the setting, then check stream health during a test using the actual encoder and network setup.
Studio labels and controls can change. If the latency selector is absent, confirm that the broadcast uses an encoder workflow rather than a webcam or mobile stream, and check the selected protocol and stream configuration.

Check protocol and resolution before choosing
RTMP or RTMPS
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio. Use the current YouTube encoder settings alongside the settings supported by the station’s encoder.
HLS
YouTube describes HLS ingestion as higher latency than RTMP because HLS delivers video in segments rather than as a continuous stream. Ultra-low latency is unavailable when HLS is selected. YouTube specifies transport-stream segments of one to four seconds; shorter segments reduce latency. It also requires a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. See YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance.

Resolution
Normal latency supports all resolutions according to YouTube. Low and Ultra-low do not support 4K. If 4K is a requirement, use Normal rather than choosing a faster mode and assuming the resolution will remain available.
Test the station feed before going live
- Use representative material. Test with audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast, not only a static image or silent slate.
- Set a sustainable upload bitrate. The connection must reliably carry the stream; a nominal speed test or average bitrate alone does not guarantee smooth delivery.
- Leave bandwidth headroom. YouTube recommends 20% upload bandwidth headroom. If sending primary and backup streams, include both streams’ bitrates in the total.
- Watch stream health. Monitor the encoder and Live Control Room for delivery warnings or interruptions while the test is running.
- Evaluate the trade-off with viewers. Check whether the selected mode provides useful interaction without unacceptable buffering in the actual station setup.
YouTube’s encoder guidance advises testing before a broadcast. Its 20% headroom figure is a setup recommendation, not a measured guarantee of performance.

Troubleshoot missing settings, delay, and buffering
- The latency option is missing: Verify that the stream is encoder-based. YouTube says webcam and mobile streams do not offer this setting. If using HLS, note that Ultra-low is disabled.
- Ultra-low is unavailable: Check whether the ingestion protocol is HLS. YouTube does not offer Ultra-low for HLS.
- 4K is unavailable after changing modes: Low and Ultra-low do not support 4K. Switch to Normal if 4K is necessary.
- Viewers report buffering: A lower-latency mode leaves less read-ahead data in the player. Test Normal, check stream health, and make sure upload capacity can sustain the total bitrate with headroom.
- Latency remains higher than expected: The mode does not guarantee a fixed end-to-end delay. Check whether the stream uses HLS, review the encoder and network path, and account for viewer-side conditions.
- The test appears smooth but the scheduled show does not: Repeat the test with representative audio and motion, and with the same encoder, protocol, and network conditions intended for the broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the station’s format is a prerecorded programme or playlist that should keep playing on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running without a computer, OBS, or home connection left on. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded video, not a live camera feed, and StreamNeo streams to YouTube only. Start a free StreamNeo day.
