You can make a device reopen a YouTube radio stream after a reboot, but reopening the page and starting audible playback are separate tasks. Set the device or browser to launch the stream, then account for YouTube’s Autoplay setting and the browser’s sound-autoplay rules. No single setup guarantees unattended playback on every computer, phone, or TV.
What “automatic” means
There are two separate behaviors to configure:
- Startup: after restart or sign-in, the device opens YouTube or the saved stream page.
- Playback: the page actually begins playing sound without a click or tap.
A device can reopen a page and leave it paused. YouTube’s Autoplay setting is a third, distinct behavior: it controls whether another related video plays after the current video ends. It does not launch YouTube when the device boots. YouTube also notes that Autoplay settings can differ across devices, so check the device that will play the stream. YouTube Help: Autoplay videos.
Set the device to reopen the stream
Desktop computer or browser-based kiosk
- Choose the destination. Open the intended YouTube live stream or radio playlist and copy its URL. A live broadcast may end or change; a playlist is a sequence of videos and may behave differently.
- Configure the browser or operating system to start it. Use the browser’s startup-page setting or the operating system’s supported startup or kiosk controls to open YouTube or the saved URL after sign-in. Menu names and available behavior vary by browser and OS version. Make sure the device can sign in automatically if that is required for the intended setup.
- Check YouTube Autoplay on that device. If you expect a playlist to advance to related videos after a video ends, enable Autoplay in YouTube. This setting does not make a live stream restart if the broadcast ends.
- Restart and test while signed in and connected. Confirm separately that the page opens, the stream is still available, and sound begins. Do not treat a page opening as proof that playback succeeded.
A Raspberry Pi forum post from 2020 describes adding a YouTube address to Chromium’s “Open a specific page or set of pages” startup option. That is an example from one setup, not current universal instructions: Raspberry Pi Forums: Get youtube to autoplay in Chromium.
Phones and TVs
Use the device’s supported app or startup behavior, if it offers one, and test it on the device itself. The available sources do not establish one dependable procedure that applies across Android, iOS, smart TVs, and desktop systems. Do not assume that a phone or TV will reopen YouTube after a reboot just because a computer browser can be configured to open a page.

If the page opens but sound does not
Browser autoplay policy can block audible playback even when a page loads correctly. Chrome’s policy allows muted autoplay, but sound may depend on prior interaction with the site or, on desktop, the user’s media engagement. The policy is profile- and behavior-dependent, so a setup that works for one user or browser profile may not work for another. If playback is rejected, Chromium recommends providing a Play control rather than assuming autoplay succeeded.
- On the affected device, open the stream manually and press Play once. Then test a restart again; prior interaction may affect whether Chrome permits sound autoplay.
- Check the browser’s site playback or sound permissions and make sure the tab or device is not muted.
- If the page still opens paused, plan on a manual Play action or use a supported kiosk configuration that you have tested. Browser, operating-system, login, network, and policy changes can interrupt unattended startup.
Chrome’s developer documentation includes the command-line flag chrome.exe --autoplay-policy=no-user-gesture-required for local testing as if a site had strong user engagement. Playlist, live stream, and embedded-player limits
A playlist is not the same as a live radio broadcast
A playlist can move through videos according to YouTube’s playback behavior and settings. A live broadcast is available only while that broadcast is live; the cited YouTube guidance does not guarantee that it will restart or remain available after the stream ends. Choose a destination that matches whether you need a sequence of recordings or a particular live broadcast.
Embedded-player autoplay is not reboot startup
If you build a page with an embedded YouTube player, the IFrame Player API’s autoplay=1 parameter requests playback when the player loads; its default is 0. The parameter does not launch a browser after reboot or override browser autoplay policy. YouTube also says enabling autoplay causes playback data collection and sharing when the page loads. Troubleshoot by symptom
