Add the countdown in your stream production, usually with an interstitial scene in OBS. Switch to that scene after one video ends, then switch to the next video when the countdown finishes. YouTube Live Control Room manages the broadcast, but its documented live settings do not provide a feature for inserting a custom countdown between playlist videos.
Build the countdown in OBS
- Create an interstitial scene. In OBS, add a separate scene for the gap, such as “Next match in…”. Give it a background that fits the gaming rerun. Keeping it separate lets the countdown cover the previous video completely.
- Add a countdown source. Use a timer source, a browser source that displays a timer, or a pre-rendered countdown clip. Plain static text does not count down on its own; a live-updating text display needs a timer source or suitable plugin.
- Set up the scene order. The intended sequence is video ends → countdown scene → next video begins. For a manually operated rerun, switch scenes yourself. For an automated setup, choose an automation method that fits how your playlist is built and rehearse it; the cited guidance does not establish a particular end-of-file automation configuration.
- Rehearse the gap. Test privately or unlisted. Check that the timer resets for each gap, decide whether audio should be muted or carried across, and confirm the next video starts at the intended point. These are practical checks, not a reported test result.
- Start the broadcast normally. Use the usual OBS and YouTube Live Control Room encoder workflow. YouTube’s live settings include stream setup and a Gaming stream type, but do not describe a custom countdown between videos (YouTube: Manage live stream settings).
Choose a countdown setup that fits your rerun
Manual scene change or automation
Manual switching is straightforward and gives you control over when the next video starts, but someone must operate the stream. Automation can make the sequence hands-off, but its behavior depends on the media and scene setup. Test the complete sequence rather than assuming a timer or playlist will trigger the transition correctly.
Live timer or pre-rendered clip
A live timer can be adjusted to different gap lengths, provided the source actually updates and resets as needed. A pre-rendered countdown clip has predictable playback, but its duration is fixed unless you select or edit another clip.
Dedicated scene or overlay
A dedicated interstitial scene gives you control over the whole picture and can fully cover the previous video. An overlay placed on the video preserves the current scene underneath, which may be useful if that is intentional, but does not hide the underlying picture by itself.

What OBS plugins and YouTube settings do—and do not do
The OBS Comp Delay project documents a text-source token, %delay_countdown%, that displays remaining seconds while a delay transition scene is active. Its documented purpose is to fill a stream-delay buffer; it does not detect the end of rerun videos or schedule a gap between playlist items. Treat it as a possible text-source and transition-scene pattern only if it suits your setup, not as a drop-in playlist countdown (OBS Comp Delay documentation).
An older OBS Project Forums thread recommends starting with an intro scene and then switching to a video scene. That is a basic scene-transition concept, not definitive current documentation for automating media end points (OBS forum thread, published December 23, 2020).

Stream latency and added broadcast delay affect delivery to viewers; they are not a visible countdown graphic in the produced video. YouTube’s HLS guidance discusses a segmented delivery method, but that is also distinct from creating an interstitial (YouTube: Set up an HLS stream; OBS forum guide to streaming to YouTube).
Troubleshoot common countdown problems
- The timer does not move: Check that you added a live-updating timer source or countdown media, rather than a static text label.
- The next gap starts with the wrong time: Confirm the timer resets for every interstitial. Rehearse multiple video transitions, not just the first one.
- The previous video remains visible: Put the countdown in a separate scene or make sure the overlay fully covers the picture.
- Audio continues unexpectedly: Decide whether audio should stop, continue, or change during the gap, then check the relevant scene and source audio behavior in rehearsal.
- Automation does not switch at the right moment: Verify the transition against the actual playlist and media setup. The cited sources do not confirm a universal end-of-file automation recipe.
- Viewers see a delay but no countdown: A broadcast delay or delivery latency is not an on-screen timer. Add the countdown to the produced picture instead.
