But a loop is not an uptime guarantee: the FFmpeg process, host, power, network, and YouTube ingest must remain available. This guide covers the media, delivery, and operations needed for an adult to run the stream, including audience settings for content directed to children.
What you need before you start
- An adult-operated YouTube channel that is verified and eligible to livestream. YouTube says a channel must have no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Encoder delivery is supported. YouTube’s livestreaming help explains eligibility and setup.
- FFmpeg installed on a computer or server that can stay on for the intended broadcast period. A particular physical product is not required; local compute and paid hosting are deployment choices.
- Original story media and permission to broadcast every included asset, including music, illustrations, fonts, and sound effects.
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream, plus access to YouTube Live Control Room and its current stream URL and key.
The exact command depends on your media, installed FFmpeg build, operating system, codecs, and YouTube’s current encoder requirements. The command below is a starting template, not a tested universal configuration.
Prepare and review the story program
Check the rights to every element
Original scripts do not automatically clear music, artwork, fonts, or other third-party material. Confirm you have the rights or licenses needed to broadcast all elements in the recording. This matters even when the story itself is your own.
Make the playback continuous
Prepare a finished audiovisual file or playlist with no unintended silence, black gaps, abrupt cuts, or mismatched audio levels. Watch or listen through the full sequence—including its end and restart point—before scheduling the livestream. An infinite loop repeats the input; it does not smooth over an awkward transition.

Set up the YouTube livestream
- Sign in to the eligible channel and open YouTube Studio, then go to Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule a livestream and select encoder delivery.
- Set the audience designation accurately. If the stories are directed to children, mark the content accordingly; originality does not change the audience setting requirement.
- Copy the current RTMPS server URL and stream key provided in the Live Control Room. Do not publish, share, or commit the key to a public repository. Treat it like a password.
YouTube livestreams must follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Review the current YouTube livestreaming requirements before going live, since platform rules and eligibility can change.
Loop a file with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 input option repeats an input indefinitely; -re reads file input at its native frame rate, pacing it like real-time playback. These are input-side options, so place them before the corresponding -i. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

The bitrate, GOP length, pixel format, audio settings, and encoder preset shown are illustrative values, not verified recommendations for every source or current YouTube configuration. Confirm YouTube’s live encoder settings for the target resolution and frame rate, and adapt the command to the source’s frame rate, audio layout, and installed encoders.
Choose stream-copy or re-encoding deliberately
The example re-encodes video with H.264 and audio with AAC. Re-encoding can help when the source is incompatible with the desired output, but it adds processing demand. If the input is already compatible with YouTube’s current requirements and you need no transformations, stream-copy may avoid re-encoding; that requires inspecting the file’s codecs, frame rate, resolution, and audio streams first. Do not assume either approach is right without checking the media and the host’s capacity.

Keep real-time pacing on file inputs
-re is useful here because the input is a stored file that would otherwise be read as quickly as possible. FFmpeg cautions that real-time pacing is for cases where output packet speed matters, such as streaming; do not apply it at a low rate to a real live-capture device.
Connect to YouTube securely
Google documents RTMPS as YouTube’s secure RTMP ingestion method: “RTMPS is a regular RTMP (RealTime Messaging Protocol) video stream tunneled through an SSL connection.” The connection uses port 443, and the protocol, ingestion endpoint, application path, and key must be valid. Use the current values shown by YouTube rather than copying a public example URL. See Google’s RTMPS delivery documentation.

A stream key embedded in a command may be visible in shell history, process listings, logs, or screenshots. Avoid sharing terminal output containing it; restrict access to the host and rotate the key in YouTube if it is exposed. For a more secure deployment, supply secrets through a protected configuration mechanism available on your operating system or hosting environment.

The loop only handles end-of-file behavior. It will not restart FFmpeg after a crash, bring back a failed computer or server, or repair a power or internet outage. A 24/7 broadcast is therefore an operational goal, not a property guaranteed by -stream_loop -1.

Plan for process and output failures
Use a process supervisor or service manager to restart FFmpeg when it exits, and retain logs so you can diagnose failures. Add monitoring or alerts if you need to know when the stream stops. FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer has options that attempt recovery after temporary output failures; those options can be one resilience measure, but they do not guarantee uninterrupted uptime. Consult the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation and validate any configuration against your output workflow.
Choose where it runs

There is no universally suitable server specification: encoding load depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, preset, filters, and whether the media can be stream-copied. Check actual resource use with your own source and settings rather than relying on a generic CPU or memory claim.
Choose the audience setting for children’s content
If the stories are directed to children, choose the made-for-kids audience setting accurately in Live Control Room. YouTube says made-for-kids livestreams have live chat and chat replay disabled; comments on archives and upcoming streams and reminder notifications are also disabled. Personalized ads are disabled, although contextual ads may appear. See YouTube’s made-for-kids guidance. These restrictions do not mean the stream is prohibited; they affect available features and advertising.
Troubleshoot common failures
