There is no separate YouTube “radio key.” You create or select a stream in YouTube Studio, then copy its stream URL and key into the encoder that sends your station’s feed. The key authorizes that connection; it does not schedule songs or keep the station running by itself.
Before you create a key
Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the time you plan to broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
You will also need an encoder: software or hardware that sends your station’s audio and video feed to YouTube. The key is a credential for that encoder, not a playlist, scheduler, or automation system. Your station software or encoder must handle audio rotation and produce the feed.
Create or find the stream key in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and select Create → Go live to open Live Control Room.
- For a new broadcast, use the Stream tab to create a stream. To prepare a future event and its watch page, open Manage → Schedule stream and create an event or reuse settings. Scheduling the event does not send your station’s feed; the encoder still has to connect.
- In the stream settings, locate the stream URL and stream key. You can reuse an existing key. To make a custom key, select Select stream key → Create new stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” in its Manage live stream settings instructions.
- In your encoder, choose YouTube if it is offered as a destination. Otherwise, paste the stream URL into the server or RTMP server field and the key into the Stream Key field. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Start the encoder output. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview in Live Control Room and select Go live when prompted. Confirm the event’s visibility—public, unlisted, or private—before you publish.
- Check the preview and stream-health indicators. Confirm that the intended audio and visual output are present, and test the setup before relying on it for a long broadcast.
Choose an encoder and stream arrangement
Software or hardware
YouTube supports software and hardware encoders; a dedicated hardware unit is not required just to create a key. Use the encoder already suited to your station if it can send a compatible feed. YouTube’s verified encoder list can help identify options, but it does not mean that any one device is necessary for every station.

Start now or schedule ahead
Start an immediate stream when you are ready to connect the encoder and go live. Schedule an event when you need a future watch page or want viewers to find the broadcast in advance. In either case, the encoder must send the stream to YouTube using the URL and key.
Reuse or create a key
Reusing a key avoids changing encoder settings each time you connect. A custom key can help distinguish a feed or configuration. Treat every key as a secret: do not publish it, include it in public documentation, or expose it in a screenshot. If you suspect it has leaked, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the value in the encoder. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a key; editors and viewers cannot.

Set encoder output and protect stream quality
Use YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate you actually intend to send. Its listed examples for H.264 include 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps, and 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended for 720p at 30 fps. Those are encoder guidance figures, not a requirement that every audio-first radio stream use those video settings. Match the output to your visual feed and available upload capacity.
- Choose RTMPS, the secure RTMP variant, when your encoder supports it.
- Set a constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Check codec and audio/video settings against YouTube’s current guidance and the encoder’s available options.
- Leave upload capacity in reserve. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% bandwidth headroom; measure the actual outbound connection, since upload capacity is not the same as download capacity.
- Test the real station output and monitor stream health, especially after changing bitrate, resolution, or frame rate.
Plan for continuous broadcasts and archives
YouTube’s help pages state a limit of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. They also say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a continuous broadcast will be saved as one complete archive: check Live Control Room behavior and plan separately for recording or preserving long-running output.

A key alone does not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation. YouTube’s documentation describes how to connect an encoder, but does not promise that a radio stream will run continuously without interruption. Reliability also depends on the encoder, station automation, network connection, and stream health.
Troubleshooting the connection
- You cannot start a live stream: check that the channel is verified, has no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and has completed first-time activation. Activation may take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube does not receive a feed: confirm that the URL is in the encoder’s server field and the key is in its Stream Key field. Check for accidental spaces, stale credentials, or a stopped encoder output.
- The preview is missing audio or video: inspect the encoder’s selected inputs and output, then verify the preview before going live. An automation playlist does not guarantee that the encoder is sending the expected feed.
- The stream is unstable or reports poor health: test outbound bandwidth, reduce output demands if needed, retain upload headroom, and verify the recommended keyframe interval and bitrate guidance for your chosen format.
- The scheduled event is waiting rather than live: start the encoder first, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then use Go live if the scheduled workflow requires it.
- You suspect the key was exposed: have a channel owner or manager reset it in Live Control Room, then update the encoder with the replacement. Do not keep using a compromised key.
