You can stream a gaming VOD stored in Google Drive as a YouTube Live event by making the video available on your computer, then sending it through an encoder such as OBS. YouTube Live needs an encoder feed, a stream URL and a stream key; a Drive share link is not a substitute. The workflow below covers downloading or syncing the VOD, configuring the YouTube event, testing the stream and avoiding common failures.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified, at least 16 years old under YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility rules, and without a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until broadcast time. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements
- Permission to download or sync the VOD from Google Drive, plus enough free disk space if you keep a local copy.
- An encoder on the computer, such as OBS, and a stable upload connection capable of sustaining the chosen stream settings.
- The VOD’s audio and video rights. Having a file in Drive does not grant permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s copyright rules still apply, and reused footage can also affect channel monetization eligibility. Review the rights and YouTube policies for your material before scheduling a public event.
Make the Drive video available to your encoder
Drive’s browser player is for viewing a stored video; YouTube Live’s encoder workflow requires software to send the video as a live feed. Download the file or make it available offline, then select that local file in your encoder. Do not assume a Drive sharing URL can be pasted into OBS or YouTube as a live source. Option 1: Download the VOD
- Open Google Drive on your computer and locate the video.
- Right-click the file or use the file menu, then select Download. Google documents downloading from Drive for desktop browsers; if the option is unavailable, the owner may have disabled downloads for viewers or commenters. Google’s download instructions
- Wait for the download to finish and confirm the file is present on the computer before opening the encoder. Large VODs need corresponding local storage.
Option 2: Use Drive for desktop
Drive for desktop can stream files while you are online or mirror them to your computer. Streaming minimizes local storage use, but depends on internet access and file availability during playback. Mirroring stores files both locally and in Drive, so it takes disk space; for a broadcast, confirm the VOD is actually available offline before relying on it. Google’s Drive for desktop guide
Set up the YouTube Live event and encoder
- Create the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a new stream or schedule one. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain the event workflow and where to retrieve its connection details. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Copy the server URL and stream key. In the event’s stream settings, copy the stream URL and key into the encoder’s stream configuration. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send video to that stream. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Add the VOD as a media source. In OBS or your chosen encoder, add the local video file as a media source and choose whether it should play once or loop, according to your broadcast plan. OBS’s exact labels can vary by version. YouTube lists OBS among encoders capable of HLS output, but a typical VOD restream can use the encoder’s ordinary RTMPS setup.
- Choose a compatible output. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s general encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1; use constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Select a resolution and bitrate your upload can sustain, using YouTube’s current recommendations for the exact resolution and frame rate. YouTube encoder settings and bitrate guidance
- Preview before going live. Start the encoder’s output and wait for YouTube’s preview and stream-health status. Check that picture, sound, motion and timing are correct before starting the public event. Test with footage resembling the real VOD rather than a static screen.
- Start the event and monitor it. Once the preview is good, go live in Live Control Room if the event requires that step. Watch stream health and audio during the broadcast; YouTube recommends testing the encoder and leaving bandwidth headroom. Choose settings that fit the upload connection
Higher resolution and frame rate need more sustained upload capacity. Avoid choosing a bitrate solely because the source VOD is high quality: the encoder’s outbound feed must remain stable for the entire event. Check the connection’s upload performance, not just download speed, and leave the headroom YouTube recommends. If stream health degrades, reduce the output bitrate or resolution and test again.

RTMPS is the standard choice for a normal gaming VOD restream. HLS is relevant for particular codec or HDR cases; YouTube lists OBS as HLS-capable, but notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments. Unless you need an HLS-specific capability, use the encoder’s usual YouTube/RTMPS configuration.
End the broadcast and protect the archive
End the event in YouTube Live Control Room and stop the encoder when the broadcast is over. YouTube automatically archives live streams shorter than 12 hours. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured, so retain a local recording if the VOD or resulting broadcast matters to you. YouTube’s encoder and archiving guidance

Troubleshooting
There is no Download option in Drive
The file owner may have disabled downloading for viewer or commenter access. Ask the owner for permission that allows downloading or for a downloadable copy; do not try to bypass the restriction.
The Drive download is blocked or fails
Google says browser third-party-cookie settings or extensions can interfere with downloads. Check those settings and retry. Google also notes that a high recent volume of views or downloads can trigger a temporary restriction that typically resets within 24 hours. Google Drive download troubleshooting

The video plays in Drive but the encoder cannot use it
Drive playback does not make the share URL a direct encoder input. Download the VOD or make it available offline in Drive for desktop, then add the local file through the encoder’s media-source feature.
YouTube receives no video or the preview is missing
Check that the encoder has the correct event’s stream URL and key, that the key has not been changed, and that the encoder is actively sending. Confirm the VOD is selected as a source and that its playback has started. Recheck the preview before taking the event live.

The stream drops frames or stream health is poor
Check actual outbound upload capacity, not advertised download speed. Leave bandwidth headroom, then lower the bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot sustain the current output. Test again with representative motion and audio before broadcasting.
There is no archive after the stream
Check the event duration. YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours; for a long broadcast, make a local recording rather than depending on the YouTube archive as the only copy.
