The reliable way to lower the electricity cost of a 24/7 YouTube stream in India is to measure your complete setup at the wall, calculate its energy use, and apply the tariff on your own bill. Then test streaming changes one at a time: a lighter workload may help, but lower CPU use does not automatically mean a lower electricity bill.
Measure the whole setup before estimating its cost
A computer’s power-supply rating is its capacity, not the amount it draws continuously. Nor is there a reliable published figure for the typical power use of an Indian 24/7 YouTube stream. Measure the actual equipment under ordinary streaming conditions instead.
- Use a plug-in energy meter that reports watts and, ideally, accumulated kilowatt-hours (kWh). Check that it fits your local socket and is rated for the connected load. The meter provides a measurement; it does not reduce consumption.
- Connect the equipment you want included in the estimate. That might mean the streaming PC or encoder, display if left on, networking gear, capture equipment and dedicated cooling. A meter at one socket will not include devices plugged in elsewhere.
- Run your usual stream and production setup, then record the average draw in watts over a representative period. A brief reading may miss changes in workload, so use a longer observation when practical.
- For a before-and-after comparison, keep stream settings, scene, equipment, operating time and tariff period as similar as possible. Record any differences that could affect the result.
The Bureau of Energy Efficiency’s demand-side-management guidance supports informed energy management; it does not establish the accuracy of any particular meter. [BEE]
Calculate daily and monthly energy use
Energy in kWh = average watts × hours ÷ 1,000. For continuous operation, a 30-day planning month contains 720 hours, so monthly energy is average watts × 0.72 kWh. These are conversions, not estimates of a typical streaming computer’s draw.

| Calculation | Formula |
|---|---|
| Daily energy | Average watts × 24 ÷ 1,000 = kWh per day |
| 30-day planning month | Average watts × 720 ÷ 1,000 = kWh per month |
| Approximate variable energy charge | kWh × applicable marginal energy rate |
The last line is only an approximation of the variable energy charge. Your bill may also include fixed charges, slab-based rates, duties, taxes, fuel adjustments or subsidies. Use the current bill or applicable tariff order to account for them. Without your measured watts and tariff, a rupee estimate would be guesswork.
Use the tariff that applies to your home
There is no single rupees-per-kWh rate that applies to every Indian household. State electricity regulatory commissions determine retail tariffs, while state governments may subsidize particular consumer classes. The Central Electricity Authority compiles annual analyses of state commission tariff orders; your consumer category, usage slab and other bill components determine what you actually pay. Check your DISCOM bill and current state tariff order rather than applying a national average. [Ministry of Power; Central Electricity Authority]

Check whether time-of-day rates apply
A Ministry of Power release dated 23 June 2023 described a time-of-day framework in which designated solar hours have rates 10%–20% below normal and peak hours have rates 10%–20% above normal. The release says the State Electricity Regulatory Commission specifies the eight-hour solar period. It also described applicability dates for certain consumer groups and a separate effective date after smart-meter installation. These framework details do not confirm that a particular household is currently billed on those schedules. Check your state commission or DISCOM for the schedule and eligibility that apply to you. Reduce the streaming workload without sacrificing stability
Test changes individually and compare both stream performance and wall energy. OBS guidance focuses on performance, not guaranteed electricity savings: any reduction in workload should be verified with a meter.

Try a hardware encoder, then measure
OBS says hardware encoders move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component in a GPU and generally recommends them for performance. Supported options include NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync and Apple VideoToolbox, depending on the machine. Check current compatibility and drivers. Older encoder generations can produce lower image quality than software encoding at similar bitrates, and reducing CPU load does not prove that the whole computer draws fewer watts. Compare wall readings at the same output settings and check picture quality before keeping the change. [OBS hardware encoding guide, 11 January 2022]
Lower resolution or frame rate only if the stream still looks right
If the encoder is struggling, OBS recommends reducing output resolution or frame rate; for example, try 30 fps instead of 60 fps if 60 fps is not working. A lower setting may reduce processing demands, but it also changes what viewers receive. Check the stream’s health and image quality as well as the meter reading. To estimate your own stream, the useful details are your state and DISCOM, consumer category, current bill or applicable tariff, and a whole-setup meter reading. Without them, a specific savings figure is not established.
Or let it run in the cloud
If keeping a PC on is a substantial part of your stream’s power use, a cloud service is another option. StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Its cloud handles the looping, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. YouTube offers webcam, mobile and encoder-based streaming; an encoder-based PC workflow is one option, not a requirement for every stream. [YouTube Help: ways to stream]
- Nothing has to stay powered on at home to keep the StreamNeo loop running.
- Each slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start your free day.
Quick Recap
Common estimation mistakes
- Using the power-supply rating as the computer’s draw: Measure input watts for the complete setup while it is streaming.
- Multiplying by a generic national electricity rate: Use your own current tariff and bill components; state tariffs and subsidies vary.
- Assuming lower CPU use means lower energy cost: Compare wall-meter readings before and after the change.
- Comparing unlike sessions: Different scenes, settings, operating times or tariff periods can distort a before-and-after result.
- Assuming a time-of-day schedule applies to every home: Confirm current eligibility and timings with your DISCOM or state commission.
