YouTube’s built-in live automatic captions are available in English only; Hindi captions need a supported captioning workflow, such as captions embedded in the outgoing stream as EIA 608/CEA 708 or delivered through compatible caption software. YouTube’s live-caption guidance distinguishes this from Hindi captions on uploaded videos.
How Hindi live captions reach YouTube
YouTube says, “To add captions to your live stream, you need to send captions to YouTube.” Its documented options include embedding EIA 608/CEA 708 caption data in the stream or using supported caption software and YouTube’s caption-ingestion workflow. The documented embedded-caption workflow supports one caption track. See YouTube’s live caption requirements.
There are two different things a viewer may call subtitles:
- Closed captions: delivered as caption data, so viewers can turn captions on or off using YouTube’s player controls.
- Burned-in or open captions: text rendered into the video image, for example as an OBS text overlay. They are always visible when that image is shown and are not viewer-selectable closed captions.
Choose closed captions if viewers should control whether captions appear. An overlay can be a fallback when selectable captions are not available, but it does not substitute for caption data sent to YouTube.

Set up Hindi captions for a YouTube Live podcast
- Create or select the live stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room, create or select the stream, and get its stream URL and stream key. Enter those in your encoder, such as OBS, and connect the podcast’s audio and video sources. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Select a caption delivery method. If your encoder and caption generator support embedded captions, enable closed captions for the stream and select Embedded 608/708. Configure the encoder or caption software to embed EIA 608/CEA 708 data. Alternatively, use caption software that supports YouTube’s caption-ingestion workflow, which sends captions to the ingestion URL using HTTP POSTs. Confirm that the software supports the workflow you intend to use; not every text overlay sends caption data to YouTube.
- Choose a separate Hindi speech recognizer. YouTube’s built-in live automatic-caption option does not caption Hindi. Select a speech-to-text service or OBS plugin that can recognize the Hindi variety used on your show, including any Hindi-English code-switching. Do not assume Hindi support or accuracy from a tool’s general description alone.
- Connect the recognizer to the caption route. Check that recognized text is passed to the embedded-caption encoder or the compatible caption-posting software, as applicable. If you use an OBS overlay instead, add a text source for visible open captions and treat it separately from closed-caption delivery.
- Rehearse the complete live configuration. Test with the same audio source, encoder, caption method, and stream settings planned for the podcast. Confirm Hindi text appears, the intended microphone is being recognized, captions stay reasonably synchronized with speech, and YouTube receives them. The cited OBS plugin descriptions do not establish Hindi recognition accuracy, so test the specific build and configuration before relying on it.
Choosing a Hindi captioning route
YouTube documents delivery methods and platform constraints, but does not rank third-party Hindi recognizers. Compare options against the requirements of your show rather than treating any particular plugin or service as a guaranteed solution.
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Hindi and code-switching support | Verify the actual recognition engine handles your speakers’ Hindi variety and any English words or phrases mixed into conversation. |
| Closed captions or visible overlay | Confirm whether the tool sends selectable caption data to YouTube or only renders text into the video. |
| YouTube delivery compatibility | Check that the tool supports the chosen embedded 608/708 or caption-ingestion workflow. |
| Delay and synchronization | Test whether captions arrive in time for a live conversation and remain aligned with speech. |
| Multiple speakers | Test turn-taking and overlapping speech with the actual number of voices on the show. |
| Archive and correction workflow | Find out whether captions can be corrected or reused with the recording after the live broadcast. Do not assume live captions automatically become the desired VOD captions. |
OBS-captions-plugin describes Google Speech Recognition and an open-caption option using OBS text sources. LocalVocal describes local recognition or translation, YouTube caption posting, and text-file output. Their project descriptions do not establish Hindi support or transcription quality. Check the current build, dependencies, and configuration, then rehearse with your own speakers.

Improve transcription by cleaning up the podcast audio
Caption software can only work with the audio it receives. YouTube identifies poor sound, unrecognized speech, overlapping speakers, and simultaneous languages as factors that can prevent or reduce automatic captioning. For a Hindi podcast, apply these checks before going live:

- Use a clear, consistent microphone signal and make sure the recognizer is listening to the intended audio source.
- Keep speaker levels reasonably consistent and avoid having guests talk over one another.
- Reduce avoidable room noise and test the actual audio feed—not just the local microphone monitor.
- Review automated text when possible. Accents, dialects, pronunciation, noisy speech, and code-switching can all lead to errors.
YouTube’s guidance on captioning issues is at Use automatic captioning. No particular microphone guarantees accurate Hindi transcription; the useful test is whether the full signal path produces readable, synchronized captions in rehearsal.
Important limits of YouTube’s built-in live captions
- YouTube states that automatic captions for live streams are available in English only. Hindi support for regular uploaded videos does not mean Hindi live captions are available.
- The built-in live-caption feature is described as rolling out to eligible English channels, is limited to normal latency, and may not be available on every channel.
- YouTube says its built-in live automatic captions do not remain on the ended stream; captions on the later video-on-demand recording may differ. This note applies to the built-in feature and should not be generalized to every external caption workflow.
- The documented embedded-caption workflow supports one caption track, so plan for one track rather than multiple simultaneous language tracks.
Troubleshoot Hindi captions during the stream
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| No captions appear in YouTube | The caption generator is not connected to a supported delivery route, or the stream’s caption setup is incomplete. | Confirm the stream is configured for Embedded 608/708 or the selected software’s YouTube ingestion workflow. Check that captions are being sent to YouTube, not only displayed as an OBS text overlay. |
| Captions appear as part of the video but cannot be turned off | The text is burned into the picture as open captions. | If viewers need selectable captions, configure a supported closed-caption delivery method and send caption data to YouTube. |
| Captions are missing or inaccurate in Hindi | The recognition engine may not support the Hindi variety, pronunciation, or code-switching on the show. | Check the exact engine and language configuration, then test with representative speech before relying on the tool live. |
| Captions lag behind conversation | Recognition and delivery may add delay or lose synchronization. | Rehearse with the complete stream configuration and assess whether delay is acceptable; check that the caption software and encoder are using the intended route. |
| Words drop out or become garbled | Poor audio, overlapping speakers, an incorrect audio source, or simultaneous languages can make speech harder to caption. | Verify the recognizer’s input, improve microphone consistency, reduce overlap and background noise, and review the output. |
| Live captions are absent from the replay | You may be relying on YouTube’s built-in live automatic captions, which do not remain on the ended stream. | Check the archived video’s caption track separately. Do not assume live captions and VOD captions are the same. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the podcast stream is a prerecorded recording rather than a live camera or conversation, StreamNeo can keep uploaded video looping on YouTube from the cloud: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it does not re-encode. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. This does not generate Hindi captions: prepare and verify the caption track or overlay separately. The first day is free with no card; after that, the monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start the free StreamNeo day.
