Loop authorized hymn files in OBS, connect the encoder to YouTube Live, and confirm rights for both the songs and recordings before broadcasting.

To keep a church hymn playlist running on YouTube Live, loop authorized audio or video files in an encoder such as OBS, connect the encoder to YouTube with your stream URL and stream key, then check the preview and stream status. The playlist repeats in the encoder; YouTube receives the encoder’s output. Before starting, confirm that the church has rights to both the songs and the particular recordings—and remember that YouTube’s automated copyright checks can interrupt a licensed stream.

What you need before starting

  • A computer that can stay on, an internet connection, and encoder software such as OBS.
  • Audio or video files the church created or has permission to stream. OBS lists local formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, WAV, MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM.
  • Permission for the musical works and, where applicable, the particular arrangement, translation, and sound recording in the files.
  • Access to the church’s YouTube channel and Live Control Room.

The exact computer and network requirements depend on the files, stream settings, and the church’s setup; there is no universal hardware configuration established for every church.

Set up a looping playlist with OBS

  1. Prepare the media. Choose the authorized files you intend to broadcast. If you plan to show a still image, lyrics, or other visuals, check that the church also has the necessary rights to those elements.
  2. Add a looping source. In OBS, add a Media Source for a single file and enable its Loop option. For multiple files, use the VLC Video Source playlist functionality and enable looping so playback restarts when the playlist finishes. OBS documents VLC Video Source support; if it is unavailable in your installation, check that VLC is installed. OBS’s Media Sources documentation is dated January 11, 2022, so labels and menus may differ by installed version.
  3. Build the scene. Add the media source to a scene. Add only visuals the church is permitted to broadcast, and verify that the scene shows the intended image and that audio is reaching OBS.
  4. Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live and use the Live Control Room’s stream settings. Copy the server URL and stream key into OBS, start the encoder, then check the YouTube preview before starting the public stream. Treat the stream key like a password; do not publish it.
  5. Verify continuity. Watch the preview, confirm that the audio is audible, and check that the playlist restarts as expected without an unwanted gap. Make sure the computer and network can remain available for the planned duration. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.
  6. Describe the stream accurately. If the church uses a CCLI license, CCLI recommends including the Church Copyright License and Streaming License numbers in the description. Confirm that the licensee, songs, recordings, and territory match the planned broadcast.

Clear the music rights before broadcasting

A hymn’s underlying composition, a particular arrangement or translation, and a commercially released recording can involve different rights. Permission for musicians to perform a hymn in a service does not by itself establish permission to stream a recording of it. YouTube’s live-stream terms say the provider represents that it has the necessary rights for the live content, including relevant music licensing rights.

Understand YouTube’s live copyright checks

YouTube says: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If a match is detected, YouTube may issue a warning, replace the stream with a placeholder, or interrupt or terminate it if the material remains. A license does not necessarily prevent an automated interruption: YouTube says a rights holder may need to add the church’s channel to its Content ID allowlist. Check YouTube Studio for warnings and contact the rights holder if a licensed stream is flagged.

Check the license against the actual use

For churches in the United States, CCLI describes its Streaming License as covering online worship services with songs and hymns performed live by church musicians. Its Streaming Plus License extends coverage to authorized master recordings, backing tracks, and multitracks. CCLI states that its repertoire includes more than 450,000 songs and hymns; that is CCLI’s own coverage statement, not an independent count. Check the current terms, each song, territory, and recording before relying on a license.

CCLI says its Streaming Plus recording permission generally concerns audio. Video use usually requires permission from the copyright owner; CCLI notes an exception for SongSelect Lyric Videos for Streaming Plus license holders during a live stream. Confirm the terms that apply to the exact visual and audio materials you plan to use.

Do not treat Creator Music as live-stream clearance

YouTube says Creator Music currently does not support licensing live content; permitted track use is for long-form videos rather than live streams. It is not a substitute for rights covering a live hymn playlist.

Choose the approach that matches the playlist

Decision Option What to verify
Playlist content The church’s own or otherwise authorized live performance or recording Rights for the composition and any specific recording, plus applicable territory and platform coverage.
Playlist content A third-party master recording, backing track, or multitrack Permission for the exact recording and song; confirm that the applicable license covers this use.
Encoder Software such as OBS That the computer, installed software, and network can play and transmit the intended stream.
Encoder Standalone hardware encoder That the device supports the required file playback and looping, and suits the church’s existing equipment and operator experience. YouTube identifies hardware encoders as an option, but a hardware purchase is not necessary for the OBS workflow described here.
US music permissions example CCLI Streaming License for covered live performances, or Streaming Plus for eligible authorized recordings and multitracks Current terms, repertoire, licensee, territory, reporting requirements, and separate visual permissions where applicable.

Troubleshoot common interruptions

  • The playlist stops at the end. Check that Loop is enabled on the OBS Media Source, or that looping is enabled for the VLC playlist.
  • The YouTube preview is black or silent. Check that the correct scene and media source are active, the file plays in OBS, and the source’s audio is reaching the encoder. Confirm that the stream URL and key were entered correctly.
  • YouTube warns about copyrighted content or interrupts the stream. Check the Live Control Room and identify the matched content. Confirm that rights cover the exact song and recording; if the church is licensed, ask the rights holder whether it must allowlist the channel through Content ID.
  • The VLC playlist source is missing. Check whether VLC is installed and whether the installed OBS version exposes the VLC Video Source.
  • The stream ends when the operator leaves. An OBS stream depends on the computer and connection remaining available. Keep both running and monitored for the intended duration, or use a cloud service for an uploaded playlist.
