To publish a podcast episode on YouTube with a still background, make the episode a video: either submit an eligible podcast RSS feed and let YouTube generate static-image videos from your show artwork, or combine the episode audio with your chosen image in a video file and upload it. YouTube treats a podcast as a playlist and each episode as a video—not an MP3 uploaded on its own. YouTube Help: Create a podcast in YouTube Studio

Choose RSS ingestion or a prepared video

The right method depends on regional availability and how much control you want over each episode’s visuals and corrections. RSS is convenient for an audio-first show with consistent cover art; a prepared video gives you control over the image or other visuals included in each episode.

Method What YouTube publishes Best suited to Important trade-off
RSS ingestion YouTube uses the podcast’s show artwork to generate a static-image video for each selected episode. Audio-first shows that already publish episodes through an RSS feed. Available only in select countries or regions. RSS updates do not automatically revise published episode audio or show details.
Prepared video upload You upload a video file combining the episode audio with a still image, audiogram, or other visuals. Creators who want to prepare episode visuals themselves or do not use an eligible RSS workflow. You must prepare and upload the video file; an MP3 alone is not a podcast episode video.

These workflows follow YouTube’s official descriptions of RSS delivery and podcast distribution.

Option 1: Publish with an RSS feed

  1. Check availability. RSS podcast ingestion is supported only in select countries or regions. In YouTube Studio, submit the show’s RSS feed if the option is available for your account and location. YouTube’s guidance on publishing or disconnecting RSS episodes also describes the access requirements.
  2. Choose the podcast and episodes. Select the podcast feed and the episodes you want YouTube to ingest. YouTube uses the show artwork to create a static-image video for each selected episode; new feed episodes can upload automatically.
  3. Review before going public. RSS setup begins with videos private. Review the generated uploads, episode details, and visibility before publishing them publicly.
  4. Check rights and disclosures. Confirm that you have rights to the audio and artwork. Review episodes for copyright and monetization issues. Use YouTube’s relevant branded-content setting for host-read promotions, sponsorships, or endorsements, and follow applicable policies.
  5. Correct source audio carefully. Changes to the RSS feed do not automatically replace published episode audio or synchronize show-detail edits on YouTube. To correct episode audio, re-upload it from the RSS feed; the previous video becomes private.

YouTube’s RSS delivery guidance explains the generated videos, private setup, correction behavior, and branded-content considerations.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Option 2: Upload an episode video with your own background

  1. Prepare the episode video. Combine the episode audio with the still image you want viewers to see. YouTube also describes audiograms and dynamic video as ways to turn an audio podcast into audiovisual content. An MP3 by itself cannot serve as a YouTube podcast episode.
  2. Create or designate the podcast playlist. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → New podcast. Add the podcast title, description, visibility, and square podcast thumbnail. You may need to verify your account. If the show already has a playlist, you can designate that playlist as a podcast instead.
  3. Upload or add the episode video. Add new or existing full-length episode videos to the podcast playlist. Each episode is a video in the playlist; keep clips and unrelated material out of it.
  4. Set the episode’s thumbnail separately if needed. The square podcast artwork and the episode video thumbnail are distinct assets. If you want a custom video thumbnail and your account is eligible, upload a separate image in the video’s thumbnail controls.
  5. Check visibility and publish. Confirm the podcast and episode settings, then publish when the video and its metadata are ready.

YouTube documents podcast creation and playlist designation in Create a podcast in YouTube Studio, and static-image or audiogram formats in Distribute podcasts on YouTube.

Use the right artwork for the show and the episode

Asset Shape and guidance Where it appears
Podcast/show artwork Square, 1:1. YouTube recommends 1280 Ă— 1280 pixels for the podcast thumbnail. The podcast playlist/show surface; RSS-generated episode videos use the show art.
Episode video thumbnail Generally 16:9. Custom thumbnail upload depends on account eligibility. File-size limits vary by device and may change; check YouTube’s current Help page before exporting. The individual episode video.

Export separately cropped files when you need both the square show cover and a landscape episode thumbnail. Use artwork you have the rights to use, and make sure thumbnails comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines. For current upload steps and limits, see Add custom thumbnails on YouTube and YouTube’s podcast setup guidance.

Organize the podcast playlist for listeners

  • Create one podcast playlist for each show and include its full-length episodes across seasons. Do not mix clips, different shows, or videos uploaded from other channels into it.
  • Use the show’s name as the podcast title and write a useful description.
  • Title videos by episode name; adding the show name is optional.
  • For an episodic show, YouTube suggests ordering episodes newest to oldest. For a serial show, it suggests oldest to newest.

These discovery recommendations are in YouTube’s podcast discovery tips. Podcast features may include YouTube Music availability and audio-only playback, but eligibility is not guaranteed. Some playlists are ineligible, including content not owned by the creator; Shorts that promote a podcast do not appear in YouTube Music. See YouTube’s podcast feature guidance.

Common problems and what to check

  • You cannot find the RSS option: RSS ingestion is limited to select countries or regions. Check the current Studio workflow and the access requirements in YouTube’s RSS publishing guidance.
  • The episode is not available publicly: RSS-created videos begin private during setup. Review and change visibility when you are ready to publish.
  • An MP3 will not add as an episode: YouTube podcast episodes are videos. Use RSS ingestion or prepare a video file with the audio and image.
  • The podcast cover looks wrong on the episode: The show cover is square, while a video thumbnail is generally 16:9. Export a separate episode thumbnail if you need a landscape image.
  • Corrected feed audio did not replace the published episode: RSS changes do not automatically update published audio. Re-upload the episode from the feed; the previous video becomes private.
  • A playlist does not get a podcast feature: Eligibility is not guaranteed. Check that the playlist contains full episodes from your show and that you own the content; YouTube identifies some playlists, including content not owned by the creator, as ineligible.
