YouTube currently allows up to 10 active streams on one channel, and up to three active streams per stream key. Both limits apply at the same time. For separate, independent feeds—such as a documentary channel’s live nature footage and a different scheduled program—create a separate stream event for each feed and send each one from an encoder to its matching event.
What counts as multiple livestreams?
Multiple independent livestreams are separate feeds running at once, each with its own event in YouTube Studio and its own video content. For example, a channel might run one feed of a wildlife camera recording and another of a documentary playlist. YouTube’s limit applies to active streams, not simply to the number of stream events saved in Studio.
YouTube also offers dual-format streaming, which presents horizontal and vertical versions of one stream with a shared stream URL and chat. That is a presentation feature, not the same as configuring two independent events with separate feeds. YouTube’s live-streaming overview describes both the active-stream limits and dual-format streaming.
How many streams can one channel run?
- Channel limit: Up to 10 active streams per channel.
- Stream-key limit: Up to three active streams per stream key.
The limits apply simultaneously: reaching either cap prevents starting another stream. If a channel is already running 10 active streams, it cannot start an eleventh even if a different key has room. Likewise, a key already being used for three active streams cannot start a fourth, even if the channel-wide total is below 10. How to set up separate feeds
- Check eligibility. The channel must be verified and have no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. If it is the first time the channel is going live, activation can take up to 24 hours. Check the channel’s live-streaming status in YouTube Studio before scheduling a launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Create a separate event for each feed. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create each independent livestream. Keep the events distinct so the right encoder output is sent to the right destination.
- Configure an encoder for each event. For each event, enter its stream URL and stream key into the encoder that will send that feed. Check that you have not exceeded 10 active streams across the channel or three using the same key. YouTube’s instructions for this workflow are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Start and verify each feed. Start the encoder output for the event and check the Live Control Room preview and status before treating the feed as live. Repeat with the matching event and encoder output for each additional feed.
For local encoding, software or hardware on your computer processes and sends the feed. YouTube says local encoding uses the computer’s processing resources, but its guidance does not specify a universal processor or computer specification; the demands depend on the actual workload. A cloud encoder is another option: it can reduce the load on your computer and may distribute a feed to multiple destinations. Compare the approaches based on processing workload, operating complexity, destinations needed, and service cost rather than assuming one setup fits every channel. Plan archives and monetization separately
Archives
YouTube automatically archives streams that are under 12 hours. Do not assume an uninterrupted 24/7 event will be saved as one complete archive; the reviewed YouTube guidance does not establish that outcome. Monetization
YouTube’s encoder instructions say that YouTube Partner Program members can monetize live streams. This is conditional on YPP membership; running several feeds or keeping one live around the clock does not itself establish monetization eligibility. Review YouTube’s current requirements and policies before relying on revenue from a stream. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Common setup problems
- You cannot start another feed: Check both caps, not just the channel total. You may have reached 10 active streams channel-wide or three active streams on that key. Stop an active stream or use an available key, while staying within the channel limit.
- The wrong event receives the feed: Confirm that the encoder’s stream URL and key match the intended event in YouTube Studio. Each independent feed should be configured for its corresponding event.
- Live streaming is unavailable: Check verification and whether the channel has had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the planned start.
- You expect one complete 24-hour archive: YouTube’s automatic archive rule covers streams under 12 hours. The reviewed guidance does not say that a 24/7 event is automatically preserved as one archive; arrange separate recording and preservation if needed.
