But YouTube’s official help does not explicitly guarantee how automatic mid-rolls behave during one uninterrupted 24/7 stream, so treat that specific edge case as undocumented—not as a confirmed continuous ad schedule.
How to turn on automatic mid-roll ads
Your channel must be eligible to monetize and comply with YouTube’s monetization terms. To earn ad and YouTube Premium revenue from live streams watched on YouTube Watch Pages or embedded in the YouTube player, YouTube says creators must accept the Watch Page Monetization Module. - Open the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Edit the stream’s monetization settings and make sure monetization is on.
- In the live ad settings, select Automatic. YouTube also offers channel-level defaults for future live streams for eligible monetized channels without rights management.
YouTube recommends automatic mid-rolls. Its help describes them as ads shown at natural breakpoints during a live stream. The system chooses the opportunities; it does not promise that an ad will appear at a particular moment.
What automatic mid-rolls mean for a 24/7 broadcast
Automatic mid-rolls are a confirmed feature for monetized live streams in general. The qualification is the format: YouTube’s official documentation does not expressly say that automatic mid-rolls will operate continuously throughout one single, uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. Do not assume a guaranteed recurring schedule for that case.

YouTube says creators can choose low, medium, or high ad frequency in automatic mode, and viewers may receive ads at different times. The setting describes how the system handles opportunities, not a fixed interval that every viewer will experience.
An ad slot is an opportunity, not a guaranteed impression. YouTube’s ad systems decide whether to serve an ad based on factors intended to balance viewer experience, creator earnings, and advertiser values. When no ad is served, the viewer continues watching the stream.

Automatic, scheduled, or manual: which setting fits?

YouTube says scheduled or manual choices may have lower earnings potential than automatic mode. That is platform guidance, not a guaranteed revenue result for an individual channel. A Stream Deck plugin is an optional way to insert ads manually; it is not required for automatic mid-rolls.
Operational caveats that matter on a long stream
- Archives are a separate issue. YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as archives. That warning concerns saving the broadcast, not a stated limit on serving ads while it is live. If the recording matters, keep a local copy. See YouTube’s archive live streams help.
- Automatic ads can be delayed. YouTube allows a 10-minute delay for automatic mid-rolls in the Live Control Room. Manually placed mid-rolls still display while that delay is enabled.
- Embedded auto-start changes ad availability. YouTube says ads are turned off for a live stream embedded on an external site with auto-start.

What YouTube’s revenue statistic does—and does not—say
In January 2024, YouTube reported an average “over 20% uplift in instream ad revenue per hour” when comparing channels that enabled live automatic mid-rolls with channels that did not, averaged across 207 countries. This is YouTube’s observational comparison; it is not a causal estimate or a promise about the revenue of a particular channel or 24/7 stream.
