How to Prepare a YouTube Playlist for a Continuous Live Stream

Use OBS to play and loop local videos, then send the encoder feed to YouTube Live. Here are the setup steps, rights checks, monitoring advice, and a cloud option.

To loop prerecorded videos on YouTube Live, play local media files through an encoder such as OBS Studio, then send that encoder feed to a YouTube stream. In OBS, use a VLC Video source for a multi-file playlist and enable Loop Playlist. The repeat control is in OBS—not in a YouTube channel playlist. YouTube receives the resulting live encoder feed.

Before you start: check channel access and video rights

  • Enable live streaming in advance. Your channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • Use media you have the right to stream. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match may produce a placeholder, warning, interruption, or termination. If you have a license for third-party material, ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; a license alone may not prevent an interruption. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.
  • Plan for a running encoder. OBS must play the files and send the feed for the entire broadcast. That means the computer, OBS, power, and network connection need to remain available. YouTube’s setup instructions do not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation.

Prepare the playlist in OBS

For multiple files

  1. Install and open OBS Studio, then create or select the scene you want to send to YouTube.
  2. In the Sources panel, select + and add a VLC Video source. Add the local video files in the order you want them played.
  3. Leave Shuffle Playlist off if the files must play in a fixed order. Turn on Loop Playlist to restart the list after its last file. OBS’s documented defaults are shuffle off and loop on; check the installed version’s controls rather than relying on defaults. OBS describes Loop Playlist as controlling whether the source restarts after it runs out of media files. See OBS’s Media Sources documentation.
  4. Check that the scene shows the video at the intended size and that its audio is audible in OBS. If you change scenes or sources during the broadcast, confirm that the playlist remains visible and playing.

For one file

A single video can use OBS’s Media Source instead. Enable that source’s Loop option; OBS documents it as off by default. Use VLC Video when you need a sequence of files, and Media Source when a single file is all you need.

Create the YouTube stream and connect OBS

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Create or schedule a stream, then set its title, visibility, and other metadata in Live Control Room. The exact controls may depend on the stream setup you choose. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
  2. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube calls the key the encoder’s password and address: “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep it secret. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.
  3. Start streaming from OBS. Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room, then check that both the picture and sound are correct. For a scheduled broadcast, start the encoder before clicking Go live in the control room.
  4. For a test, use an unlisted or private stream when appropriate. Check access from the channel, the watch page, and a mobile device before relying on the setup.
  5. When the broadcast is over, stop the encoder and end the stream in Live Control Room. YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours; its cited guidance does not promise an archive for a longer continuous broadcast. Plan separate recording or other archive arrangements if the stream will exceed that threshold.

Timing, monitoring, and reliability

YouTube’s current live-streaming tips recommend setting up the encoder at least 2 hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Use that lead time to confirm that OBS is connected, the preview is healthy, the playlist advances, and audio remains audible. If you use encoder failover, test that the backup takes over when the primary encoder or its network connection stops. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

A continuous stream depends on every part of the chain: OBS playback, the computer and its power, the network, and YouTube’s service. A loop setting repeats the playlist; it does not by itself provide recovery from a crashed computer, lost connection, or interrupted YouTube feed.

When HLS ingestion may be relevant

For an ordinary OBS playlist stream, RTMP is the usual encoder workflow. YouTube also documents HLS ingestion for cases such as HDR or codecs that RTMP does not support. HLS needs encoder support, has higher latency than RTMP, and has additional segment and playlist constraints; it is an alternate configuration, not a requirement for the playlist steps above. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

Common problems and fixes

  • The stream does not appear in Live Control Room: Confirm that OBS is streaming to the correct YouTube server URL and that you copied the matching stream key. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
  • The playlist stops at the end: For VLC Video, check Loop Playlist. For a single Media Source, check Loop. The controls are separate.
  • Files play in an unexpected order: Check the playlist order and turn off Shuffle Playlist if you need sequential playback.
  • The preview has no sound or picture: Confirm the correct OBS scene is active, the source is visible, and the file plays locally. Check audio meters and listen to the preview before making the broadcast public.
  • YouTube interrupts the broadcast: Check Live Control Room for warnings. Third-party Content ID matches can interrupt or terminate a live stream; for licensed material, ask the rights owner to allowlist your channel.
  • The archive is missing after a long stream: YouTube’s guidance documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed archive for longer broadcasts. Arrange a separate recording if you need a copy.
