How Much Data Does a Pre-Recorded YouTube Live Stream Use Per Day?

Daily data use depends on playback bitrate and viewing time. Learn the 24-hour estimate and why YouTube’s mobile-broadcasting figure is different.

For a viewer, there is no single daily data figure: it depends on the playback bitrate YouTube delivers and how long the stream plays. As a rough calculation, multiply the actual playback bitrate in Mbps by 10.8 to estimate decimal GB used in 24 hours. If you mean broadcasting prerecorded footage as a live stream from a phone, YouTube’s separate rule of thumb is about 10 MB per minute—roughly 14.4 GB for 24 hours of continuous broadcasting. That is upload data, not a viewer’s download data.

First, distinguish watching from broadcasting

A viewer downloads the version of the live stream delivered for playback on their device. A broadcaster sends an incoming feed to YouTube. Those are different data flows, and the broadcaster’s encoder bitrate does not automatically tell you how much data each viewer uses.

YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers. The bitrate of a viewer’s playback can therefore differ from the stream’s incoming bitrate. YouTube’s live encoder guidance describes source-side settings and transcoding, not a guaranteed viewer bitrate.

Estimate a viewer’s data use for 24 hours

Use the actual playback bitrate, if you can find or measure it. The conversion assumes decimal units: 1 megabit per second over 86,400 seconds is 10,800 megabits, or 10,800 megabytes after dividing by eight—10.8 decimal GB.

Estimated data per 24 hours in decimal GB = playback bitrate in Mbps Ă— 10.8

Assumed playback bitrate Estimated use in 24 hours
2 Mbps 21.6 GB
5 Mbps 54 GB

These are arithmetic examples, not YouTube-published playback rates or measurements of typical streams. For a shorter viewing period, multiply the 24-hour estimate by the fraction of the day watched. For example, six hours is one quarter of a day.

Why resolution recommendations are not data-use figures

YouTube’s playback troubleshooting guidance lists sustained connection-speed recommendations of 20 Mbps for 4K, 5 Mbps for 1080p, 2.5 Mbps for 720p, 1.1 Mbps for 480p, and 0.7 Mbps for 360p. These are recommendations for a connection’s speed, not measured playback bitrates or daily consumption totals. YouTube’s troubleshooting page should be used as quality and network context, not as a data-use calculator.

If you use one of those speeds as a rough proxy in the formula, label it as a proxy rather than claiming it is the bitrate YouTube actually sends. Quality can vary with the stream, device, and network conditions.

If you are broadcasting prerecorded footage from a mobile device

YouTube Help’s Filming tips – Live gives a rule of thumb for mobile live streaming: about 10 MB of data per minute. At that rate, continuous broadcasting for a day is about 14,400 MB, or 14.4 decimal GB uploaded. This is an organization-published estimate for mobile broadcasting, not a universal rate for all setups and not the download used by viewers.

Get a closer estimate for your own viewing

  1. Set the intended playback quality. Use the quality setting you expect to watch at; automatic quality may change during playback.
  2. Record a baseline. Note the device’s or mobile carrier’s data counter before playback.
  3. Watch for a representative period. Use the same device, network, and viewing conditions you expect to use for the daily stream.
  4. Check the counter again. Subtract the baseline, then scale the measured amount to your expected daily viewing time.

A device or carrier counter captures what that device or service measured during the test. Actual totals can differ from a simple bitrate calculation because of ads, app traffic, buffering, and measurement conventions. Shared or variable networks can also affect playback conditions. YouTube’s streaming tips discuss shared-network limits and recommend upload headroom for broadcasters; that upload guidance is not an extra factor to apply to a viewer’s daily estimate.
