A spinning loading symbol means YouTube has not started or resumed playback; by itself, it does not reveal why. The cause may be your device or connection, a shared network, the broadcaster’s stream or encoder, or a temporary YouTube problem. Compare another stream, device, or connection first, and check whether other viewers are affected.
First, find out how widespread the problem is
Try these comparisons before changing settings. They help distinguish a playback issue on your side from one affecting a particular network or stream.
- Refresh the player, or close and reopen YouTube.
- Try another live stream. If that plays, the problem may be specific to the stream you were watching.
- If possible, try the same stream on another supported device.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, or test a supported wired connection. If playback works on one connection but not another, the failing connection or its route may be involved; that does not identify the exact network fault.
- Ask whether other viewers are affected, and whether they are using the same network.
YouTube recommends trying a different connection or supported device when playback remains faulty. See YouTube’s video playback troubleshooting steps.
Fixes by device
Computer: browser playback
- Refresh the player, then close and reopen the browser.
- Update the browser and restart the computer. YouTube recommends using a current supported browser and suggests Chrome in its troubleshooting steps.
- Close unnecessary tabs and try the stream again.
- If the problem appears limited to one browser, test another browser or an incognito/private window. If that works, an extension or cached browser data could be involved; this test can narrow the issue but does not prove its cause.
TeamYouTube has also identified extensions, cache, and connection quality as possible contributors to freezing or loading problems in its playback troubleshooting discussion.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Phone or tablet: YouTube app
- Switch connections, such as from Wi-Fi to mobile data, and retry playback.
- Close and reopen the YouTube app.
- On devices where the option is available, clear YouTube’s app cache through the device’s app settings.
- Check for app and device-system updates.
Menu names and cache options vary by device and operating-system version.
TV or streaming device
- Check that the device is connected to the internet. If the player offers a quality control, try a lower playback quality.
- Quit YouTube and reopen it. If appropriate, sign out and back in.
- Restart the TV or streaming device, then check for a system-software update.
- If it is using Wi-Fi, try positioning it nearer the router and reducing sources of wireless interference. If the device supports Ethernet, a wired connection can be a useful diagnostic test; cable compatibility and length depend on your setup.
YouTube’s TV troubleshooting instructions recommend at least 7 Mbps for HD streaming on a TV. This is a TV-specific recommendation, not a guarantee against buffering. See YouTube’s playback troubleshooting guidance.

Check whether your connection has enough sustained speed
YouTube’s general system-requirements guidance lists 500+ Kbps as a minimum internet connection for watching YouTube videos. That general minimum is not a recommended speed for every live stream. Its approximate sustained-speed recommendations are 5 Mbps for 1080p HD and 20 Mbps for 4K UHD. YouTube notes that movies, TV, and live streams can need faster connections and more processing power. These speeds are guidance, not a promise that playback will never buffer; stability matters too. The retrieved guidance does not state a publication year, so check YouTube’s current system requirements for updates.
What the pattern can tell you
The number of affected viewers and whether they share a connection are useful triage clues, not proof of a specific cause.

| What you observe | What it may point to | What to try next |
|---|---|---|
| Only you have trouble, while other viewers can watch | Your device, app or browser, or internet connection may be involved. | Try another device or connection, then follow the relevant device steps above. |
| Several viewers on the same network have trouble | A shared-network issue may be involved. | Test another connection if possible; check the local network or contact the internet provider if the problem persists. |
| Viewers on different networks report trouble with the same stream | The broadcaster’s stream or encoder may need investigation. | The broadcaster should review live-stream metrics and errors, inspect the encoder output, and check outbound connectivity. |
| The player stalls specifically when an ad is supposed to start | This resembles a documented, historical YouTube incident; that resemblance does not show it is recurring. | Refresh the player and check for a current YouTube service update before concluding the cause. |
YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance uses an example in which 10 people watching 10 streams require 10 times the inbound network speed. This illustrates how shared viewing can add up; it is not a universal measured study result. For broadcaster-side diagnosis, see YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.
If the spinner appears when an ad starts
On April 14, 2026, some viewers using desktop browsers and TV apps reported a persistent loading icon when an ad was supposed to start on monetized live streams. In an update to a YouTube Community thread, Natasha, a TeamYouTube Google Employee, said: “This issue is now fixed! Viewers should now see live streams loading normally without the persistent loading icon.” YouTube’s update marked that incident fixed and advised refreshing the player. It is historical context, not evidence that the same problem is happening now. See the YouTube Community update.

When to contact the broadcaster or YouTube
- Only one stream fails: Check whether the broadcaster has acknowledged a problem. If other streams work across your devices and connections, the broadcaster may need to investigate that stream.
- Several people on your network are affected: Check the shared connection and contact your internet provider if the problem continues.
- Reports come from viewers on separate networks: Tell the broadcaster what devices and connections are affected. They can inspect stream metrics, encoder preview and errors, and outbound connectivity.
- The problem continues: YouTube recommends reporting a continuing live-stream issue through its support process. Viewers can also submit in-app feedback after a playback problem. Use YouTube’s feedback instructions.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you are the broadcaster and want an uploaded recording or playlist to keep a YouTube channel live 24/7, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Every slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
