To unlock live streaming, phone-verify your channel in YouTube Studio: on a computer, open Settings → Channel → Features, then choose Features that require phone verification → Verify phone number. Enter the code YouTube sends by text or voice call. Verification is necessary, but YouTube also requires that you have no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days and are at least 16 to start a stream. A newly enabled first stream can take up to 24 hours to become available.
Verify your channel by phone
- Sign in to the Google account that owns or manages the YouTube channel, then open YouTube Studio on a computer.
- Select Settings → Channel → Features.
- Under Features that require phone verification, select Verify phone number.
- Choose text message or voice call if offered, enter the code YouTube sends, and finish the prompts. YouTube’s instructions are in See and unlock features with phone verification.
- Return to the channel’s feature status in Studio. If this is the first time live streaming has been enabled, allow up to 24 hours before starting the first broadcast.
For a Brand Account, its owner or managers can verify the channel by phone. For a channel that is not a Brand Account, only the channel owner can do so.
Check eligibility if you still cannot go live
Phone verification unlocks the channel feature; it does not override the separate requirements for starting a broadcast. YouTube’s Get started with live streaming guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days.
Check restrictions and age
- Recent live-streaming restrictions: Check channel standing and any notices in YouTube Studio. A restriction in the previous 90 days can prevent live streaming even after verification.
- Age: The person starting the stream must be at least 16. YouTube also describes safeguards for streams featuring 13–15-year-olds without a visibly accompanying adult; see its live-streaming guidance.
Apply the subscriber rule only to mobile streaming
Streaming from the YouTube mobile app has additional eligibility conditions: at least 50 subscribers, a verified channel, no live restriction in the previous 90 days, and a supported device. YouTube lists Android 8.0+ or iOS 8+. Its Create a live stream on mobile page says channels with 50–999 subscribers may have a limited audience and their archived streams are private by default. After a channel reaches 1,000 subscribers, removal of those limitations may take several weeks.

Choose the right streaming method
The 50-subscriber threshold is specifically listed for mobile-app streaming; do not assume it applies to every method. YouTube also supports streaming by computer webcam, encoder, or console. A computer webcam stream requires a computer with a webcam, while mobile eligibility includes the supported-device requirements above. See Get started with live streaming for the available methods.
If the verification code does not arrive
- Check that the phone number and selected delivery method are correct, then try the other offered method.
- Not all mobile carriers support YouTube’s text messages or voice calls. Use YouTube’s verification troubleshooting guidance if delivery still fails.
- YouTube limits a phone number to verification of no more than two channels per year.
Phone verification is not advanced-feature verification
Phone verification unlocks intermediate features, including live streaming. Advanced features are a separate tier: YouTube says creators must first complete phone verification and then either build sufficient channel history or verify identity with ID or video, where those options are available. YouTube says most active channels already have sufficient channel history, and ID or video verification is not offered to everyone. Check Get access to intermediate and advanced features for the distinction.
