How to Make a 24/7 YouTube Study Stream Resume Its Playlist After a Reboot

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To bring a 24/7 YouTube study stream back after a reboot, you need three separate things: a playlist configured to loop, a way to start the encoder when the computer boots, and a YouTube broadcast that will accept the encoder’s connection. OBS’s loop and automatic-reconnect settings do not, by themselves, guarantee that OBS will relaunch at boot or restore the playlist’s previous item and timestamp. Plan to test those behaviors on your own setup.

What “resume” can mean after a reboot

A reboot closes the encoder and interrupts its connection to YouTube. When it starts again, media playback, encoder startup, and broadcast reconnection are separate problems:

  • Repeat the media: Configure a single video or playlist to loop.
  • Start the encoder: Set up the operating system to launch it after reboot.
  • Continue the YouTube broadcast: Check that the existing broadcast is still eligible to accept a reconnect.
  • Restore the exact playlist position: Verify whether your chosen setup remembers the item and timestamp. The OBS documentation cited here does not establish that it does.

Accordingly, a looping playlist means it can repeat during playback; it is not proof that playback will continue from the same point after the computer restarts.

Configure looping in OBS

For one study video

  1. In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene containing the study stream.
  2. Select the video file and enable Loop in the source settings.
  3. Make sure the file remains available at the same path after reboot. A file on a disconnected external drive or a user-specific location that is unavailable at startup can prevent playback.

OBS documents the Media Source loop setting in its Media Sources guide, dated January 11, 2022.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For a playlist of several files

  1. Add a VLC Video source in OBS.
  2. Add the video files to its playlist and arrange them in the desired order.
  3. Enable Loop Playlist if the list should repeat. The documented default for shuffle is off; check the setting if playback order matters.
  4. Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  5. Check the source’s visibility behavior. OBS says playback can continue, pause, or stop when the source is not visible. Choose the behavior that suits your scenes so hiding the source does not unexpectedly interrupt playback.

The VLC playlist and visibility options are also described in OBS’s Media Sources guide.

Make the encoder start after a reboot

Automatic reconnect handles a dropped connection while the encoder is running; it is not a boot-time startup mechanism. OBS’s Overview Guide, dated August 25, 2021, identifies automatic reconnect as a configurable option but does not say that it relaunches OBS after a reboot.

Desktop OBS

  1. Use your operating system’s application-startup facility to launch OBS after reboot. The cited OBS documentation does not provide a complete, universal boot-start procedure, so the exact path depends on your operating system and installation.
  2. Check whether OBS launches in the user session or before anyone signs in. Do not assume a desktop startup setting works when no user session is active.
  3. Confirm that the media files, any required external drives, and VLC are available to the account that runs OBS.
  4. In OBS, configure automatic reconnect for transient connection failures. Treat this as a separate safeguard from boot-time startup.

Headless Linux encoder

A service manager such as systemd can start a headless encoder when Linux boots. A public project documents one implementation using FFmpeg and systemd, including resuming a nonterminal event after a host reboot: StreamerCI on GitHub. This is an implementation reference for that project, not a generic OBS setup or a guarantee that other encoders preserve playlist position. You will need to configure and verify your own service, media paths, restart policy, and YouTube connection behavior.

Check YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle

Starting OBS again does not necessarily continue the same YouTube broadcast. Review the current stream and scheduling controls in YouTube Studio before depending on unattended recovery. An older OBS community guide to YouTube auto-start and auto-stop warns that auto-stop disables the possibility of reconnecting later to continue that broadcast; a new broadcast may need to be scheduled. Because platform controls and behavior can change, verify the current settings for your channel and broadcast rather than relying only on an older guide.

YouTube’s HLS ingestion documentation covers HLS-specific stream requirements, including rolling playlist and segment constraints. Those are ingest requirements, not instructions for restoring a local OBS playlist after reboot. Most OBS users should use the YouTube integration or the settings for their chosen protocol, following the current setup shown in YouTube Live Control Room.

Test recovery before relying on it

  1. Use an unlisted or otherwise low-risk test broadcast, and make sure the test content is appropriate to stream.
  2. Start playback and confirm the video or playlist behaves as intended before rebooting.
  3. Reboot the computer. Observe whether OBS starts automatically and whether the source can access its media.
  4. Check whether playback begins at the first item, resumes at the previous item, or returns to the previous timestamp. Record what your setup actually does; the cited OBS pages do not establish a universal result.
  5. Check whether the encoder reconnects to the existing YouTube broadcast or whether YouTube requires a new broadcast.
  6. Review the YouTube output as well as the OBS preview. A source playing locally does not prove the public stream has resumed.

Desktop OBS or a managed encoder?

Consideration Desktop OBS Service-managed headless encoder
Setup Visual scene and source configuration; OBS documents Media Source and VLC playlist settings. Requires configuring a service and encoder; the cited systemd example is a third-party FFmpeg implementation.
Boot behavior Use your operating system’s startup facilities; the cited OBS guides do not specify a complete reboot-start procedure. A service manager can launch the encoder at boot; exact behavior depends on the implementation.
Playlist looping Media Source supports Loop for one file; VLC Video supports playlists and Loop Playlist. Depends on the encoder and service configuration.
Position after restart Not established by the cited OBS documentation; test your setup. Not established for implementations generally; the cited project’s behavior should not be generalized to other setups.
Monitoring and maintenance Check the desktop session, media availability, OBS status, and YouTube output. Check the service, encoder logs, media access, and YouTube output.

The available documentation supports these feature distinctions, not a controlled comparison of reliability or recovery results.

Troubleshooting after a reboot

  • OBS does not open: Check the operating system’s startup configuration and whether it runs only after a user signs in. Confirm the startup entry points to the installed OBS application.
  • The source is blank or reports missing media: Confirm the file path is still valid, the relevant drive is mounted, and the account running OBS can access the files.
  • A VLC playlist does not load: Confirm VLC is installed and, for 64-bit OBS, that the installed VLC is 64-bit.
  • Playback stops when you change scenes: Inspect the VLC source’s visibility behavior; OBS allows playback to continue, pause, or stop when the source is hidden.
  • The stream is disconnected even though OBS is open: Check OBS’s automatic-reconnect configuration and the connection. Reconnect does not replace boot-time startup.
  • OBS is streaming but YouTube does not continue the old broadcast: Review YouTube Studio’s broadcast lifecycle settings and scheduling. If the broadcast has stopped, the existing event may not accept a later reconnect.
  • The playlist loops but does not resume where it stopped: Looping and position persistence are different behaviors. The cited OBS documentation does not promise restoration of the prior item or timestamp, so use your reboot test to establish what your setup does.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want to avoid keeping a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud service loops the video without requiring your computer, OBS, or home connection to stay on.
