YouTube Says “No Data Is Being Received”: Fixes for OBS and FFmpeg

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When YouTube says “no data is being received,” first check that your encoder is sending to the active stream’s exact URL and stream key in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Then compare the encoder’s local output with YouTube’s preview: that tells you whether to investigate capture and encoding or the connection to YouTube. The message describes a symptom, not a single cause.

Start with the active stream URL and key

  1. Open the current stream in YouTube Studio. In Live Control Room, select the active stream and locate its Stream URL and Stream key. Match both values against the encoder’s destination server and key. A correct key paired with the wrong stream or server can still send data to the wrong place.
  2. Update a stale or exposed key. If YouTube reports an error starting the encoder, its guidance is to get a new stream key and update the third-party encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not share it in screenshots, logs, public commands, or support posts. Redact it before sending diagnostic material.
  3. Start the encoder and watch YouTube’s preview. If the preview begins receiving video and audio, ingest is working; any remaining issue is more likely related to the stream’s settings or presentation. If the encoder shows healthy local output but YouTube receives nothing, focus on the destination, protocol, and outbound network path. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guide covers errors starting third-party encoders and connection issues.

Find where the feed stops

Check the chain in order rather than changing unrelated settings. A camera, media file, or audio source must reach the encoder; the encoder must produce a feed; that feed must reach YouTube’s ingest server. A local preview or temporary local recording can help establish whether capture and encoding are functioning before you troubleshoot remote ingest.

  • No usable local picture or sound: Check that the intended video and audio sources are enabled, that the encoder is not showing errors, and that the computer can handle the workload. Review CPU load and the encoder log. This points first to capture or encoding, not necessarily to YouTube.
  • Local output looks right, but YouTube’s preview is blank: Recheck the active stream’s URL, key, and protocol, then test the outbound connection. Confirm that the encoder process is actually sending, not merely open with a preview.
  • YouTube begins receiving, but frames drop or the stream struggles: Investigate whether the connection can sustain the configured bitrate and whether settings match the intended resolution and frame rate.

Check network capacity and stability

Compare the encoder’s configured bitrate with stable available upload capacity, not just a brief peak speed result. Leave headroom for normal network variation and other traffic on the connection. YouTube’s published bitrate recommendations are encoder configuration guidance, not guaranteed outcomes for a particular internet connection.

OBS says dropped frames indicate an unstable connection to the remote server or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Its connection guide says, in the context of dropped frames, “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.” That does not mean OBS can never have a problem; it means the symptom commonly calls for checking the network path. See the OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated 2024-09-30.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Lower the bitrate as a test. If the stream becomes stable, the connection may not reliably support the original setting. Choose a bitrate appropriate for the stream’s resolution, frame rate, codec, and available upload capacity.
  • Test Ethernet if Wi-Fi may be unstable. A wired connection is a useful diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix. Restarting a modem and router can also help identify a general connectivity problem. Replace network hardware only if there is evidence it is faulty.
  • Look for software or driver interference. VPNs, security software, network-optimization utilities, outdated network drivers, and network hardware can affect the path. Test changes carefully; do not leave security software disabled after a diagnostic.
  • Check OBS connection options when indicated. The OBS guide discusses trying another server where applicable, Windows network optimizations or TCP pacing, Default Bind to IP, testing IPv4-only and reverting if it does not help, and dynamic bitrate adjustment as a fallback. Dynamic bitrate can reduce video quality; menu labels vary by operating system and OBS version, so follow the current guide for your setup.

Verify protocol and encoder settings

YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream sent to Google’s servers. Use the RTMPS server URL supplied by the active stream in Live Control Room; do not assume an endpoint or copy one from an unrelated event. For an SSL error or timeout, verify the URL begins with the supplied RTMPS protocol, confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS, and check whether port 443 is required by the connection. YouTube’s live encoder settings describe its protocols and configuration guidance.

Settings to check once data is arriving

YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Advanced recommendations include square pixels, progressive scan, Rec. 709 for SDR, and stereo AAC or MP3 audio at 128 kbps. Codec availability depends on the protocol and encoder; HLS has a separate setup and settings path.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

For H.264, YouTube’s published recommended video bitrates include 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, and 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps. These are configuration recommendations, not measured results or proof that a connection can sustain them. Use the row for your actual mode in YouTube’s settings table; other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs have different values.

HLS uses an HTTPS ingest URL and has different segment and codec requirements. It also has higher latency than a continuous RTMP feed. Use HLS only when the encoder and use case call for it; switching to HLS is not a general fix for a wrong RTMP/RTMPS key or destination.

Fixes to try in OBS

  1. Update OBS and confirm its output destination. Use a current version, then compare the selected server URL and stream key with the active YouTube stream. Do not post the key when asking for help.
  2. Confirm sources and local output. Check that the intended video and audio sources are active. Inspect the local preview, encoder errors, and CPU load; make a local recording if useful to distinguish an encoding problem from a remote ingest problem.
  3. Open OBS’s connection diagnostics. If the log reports dropped frames, follow the network checks above: test a lower bitrate, use Ethernet if practical, and investigate VPN, security, bundled network utilities, drivers, and network hardware.
  4. Change advanced connection options only as tests. The OBS guide describes trying another server where available, Windows network optimizations or TCP pacing, Default Bind to IP, and IPv4-only testing with a revert if it does not help. Dynamic bitrate is a fallback, with reduced video quality as a trade-off. Exact labels can differ by release and operating system; consult the guide rather than assuming a menu path.

Fixes to try in FFmpeg

There is no universal FFmpeg command-line correction for YouTube’s “no data” message. The right diagnosis depends on the actual command, FFmpeg build, protocol, destination URL, and error output. Check that the process is running and producing a feed, that its destination matches the active Live Control Room URL and key, and that it is using a protocol supported by the encoder and YouTube settings.

When requesting help, provide the FFmpeg version or build details, the command with credentials redacted, the protocol, and the relevant error log. Keep the stream key private. Without those details, replacing a command with a generic example could conceal the real issue or expose a reusable credential.

When to escalate

If the URL, key, protocol, encoder output, and network checks do not resolve the problem, preserve the encoder log with the stream key removed and note the time of failure and protocol used. YouTube directs ongoing encoder problems to the encoder provider and connection problems to the internet service provider. Share evidence that helps separate those paths rather than sending credentials.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep pre-recorded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a separate option from troubleshooting OBS or FFmpeg for a live encoder feed. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It supports uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
