If your YouTube RTMP stream keeps reconnecting, first determine whether the encoder is failing, your computer is struggling, or the outbound internet connection is dropping. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages alongside your encoder log, local preview, CPU load and recording. Then adjust the setting or part of the connection that the evidence points to; changing the stream key or switching protocols at random is unlikely to solve a network problem.
Find out where the interruption starts
During or immediately after a drop, note the time and compare three signals: YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health notices, the encoder’s log or status, and the video being produced locally. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes encoder problems from outbound internet problems: if the stream looks healthy in the encoder but YouTube reports connection trouble, the path from your encoder to YouTube may be responsible. YouTube’s troubleshooting guide is the place to match a specific dashboard or encoder error to its suggested next step.
- Local preview or recording is also glitchy: investigate the source, routing, encoder configuration and computer load.
- Local output is clean but YouTube loses the feed: investigate upload capacity, connection stability and the encoder’s connection to YouTube.
- The encoder reports a startup or key error: check the stream key and the exact error before changing it.
If several viewers on separate connections report the same disruption, consider a problem in the stream or encoder rather than assuming each viewer has a separate network fault. Use the specific stream-health messages to narrow it down.
Check the encoder and computer
- Review the encoder log at the drop time. Look for an encoder error, lost connection, overload warning or startup/key message. Record the exact wording rather than treating every reconnect as the same failure.
- Inspect the local preview and recording. Check for missing frames, frozen video, audio interruptions or other artifacts. A local recording helps distinguish a bad feed being produced from a good feed that is failing to reach YouTube.
- Check system load and source routing. If local output is poor, inspect CPU load and confirm the intended video and audio sources are reaching the encoder. Reduce system strain or correct the routing if the evidence points there.
- Update the encoder software. If the fault remains unclear after checking the output and load, YouTube suggests trying a different encoder to help isolate the problem.
Test whether your upload can sustain the stream
Run an upload speed test, ideally under conditions resembling the planned stream. Compare the encoder’s total target bitrate with the upload connection you can sustain, not just a best-case result. Leave headroom for normal variation and other devices using the connection. A nominal speed-test result does not guarantee a stable live feed at that bitrate.

YouTube recommends choosing a quality level reliable for the available internet connection and says to test upload bitrate. Its current H.264 recommendations include the following encoder video-bitrate values; they are not universal minimum internet speeds or guarantees of a stable connection. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance should be checked for the full settings and supported workflows.
| H.264 output | YouTube’s minimum video bitrate | YouTube’s recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube Help’s encoder recommendations; the retrieved page does not display a publication year. They describe video bitrate settings, not the upload speed every connection must achieve. If upload capacity is inconsistent or has too little headroom, test a lower resolution or bitrate and observe stream health. If a connection test indicates a problem, YouTube advises contacting your ISP.

Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet as a diagnostic
If you can, try a wired Ethernet connection and compare it with Wi-Fi under similar conditions. This is a practical way to check whether the local wireless path contributes to the instability, not a YouTube-prescribed cure. A cable will not fix an encoder fault, insufficient upload capacity or an ISP-side problem.
Verify the RTMP settings
Use settings compatible with YouTube’s ingest guidance rather than making repeated untracked changes. For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 as supported video codecs, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Use a quality and bitrate appropriate to the actual connection.

- Rate control: constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframe interval: two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
- Transport: YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension to RTMP, when supported by your encoder and workflow.
Use the bitrate table above as an encoder-setting reference, then test whether the real uplink can sustain the chosen output. If the stream becomes stable only after lowering the target, the limiting factor may be the connection’s capacity or consistency rather than a YouTube setting.
Change the stream key only for a key-related error
A stream key tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it, so treat it like a password. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says that when a third-party encoder reports an error starting, get a new key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. Resetting a key is available to a channel owner or manager; see YouTube’s stream-key guidance.

Do not rotate the key as a generic response to a midstream network drop. Preserve the current key unless the error points to it or security circumstances justify replacing it. If you do reset it, update the encoder with the new key before attempting to start again.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Rehearse the complete stream before an event
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes ahead. Use that time to confirm that the Live Control Room preview appears, the local recording is being written, audio and moving video behave as expected, and stream health remains acceptable. YouTube’s live streaming tips also describe testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable so you can confirm that a backup takes over.

For a documentary premiere, interview or other scheduled broadcast, test with representative audio and movement rather than a static screen alone. Keep monitoring the stream-health indicators during the rehearsal and show; an initially clean preview does not prove the connection will remain stable later.
When HLS is—and is not—a useful alternative
Switching from RTMP to HLS is not a general reconnection fix. YouTube describes HLS as an option for supported workflows such as HDR or codecs unavailable through RTMP, but HLS has higher latency because it sends video segments rather than one continuous stream. Consider it only if your encoder and workflow support it and its latency trade-off fits the broadcast. See YouTube’s guidance on HLS ingestion alongside the RTMP settings guidance.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you see | What to check next |
|---|---|
| The local preview or recording has glitches too | Check source routing, encoder settings and CPU load; update the encoder, and try another encoder if the cause remains unclear. |
| Local output is clean, but YouTube reports connection trouble | Test upload bitrate under realistic conditions, compare the target with sustainable upload capacity, leave headroom, and contact your ISP if the connection test indicates a problem. |
| The encoder reports a startup or stream-key error | Follow the specific error; if it points to the key, obtain a new one in Live Control Room and update the encoder. |
| The stream fails only on Wi-Fi | Compare with a wired Ethernet test to see whether the local wireless path is contributing. |
| A backup encoder is meant to take over but does not | Rehearse failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then verify the backup takes over. |
