Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor a live 4K/60fps YouTube stream, YouTube recommends 35 Mbps with AV1 or H.265 (HEVC), or 50 Mbps with H.264. Its listed minimums are 10 Mbps and 14 Mbps, respectively. If you mean uploading a finished 4K/60fps video, the separate recommendations are 53–68 Mbps for SDR and 66–85 Mbps for HDR. These figures describe different stages of the video pipeline, so use the live-stream figures for an encoder sending a broadcast to YouTube.
Live 4K/60fps bitrate: choose by encoder codec
YouTube’s live encoder settings list a recommended bitrate and a minimum for each codec at 2160p (4K) and 60 fps. The recommendations are for the stream sent from your encoder to YouTube—not a guaranteed bitrate for viewers. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for different devices and network conditions. YouTube Help: live encoder settings (publication date not stated; figures verified October 3, 2026).
| Live ingest codec | Listed minimum | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
Use the recommendation for the codec you actually send to YouTube. The minimum is not a promise of acceptable image quality in every scene; footage with fast movement or fine detail can be more demanding. YouTube’s table does not guarantee a particular result for a specific scene.

Live broadcast: encoder to YouTube
Use the live table above when an encoder sends a real-time stream to YouTube. Select the row for 2160p/60fps, then choose the bitrate based on the ingest codec.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Finished video: upload to YouTube
For a pre-recorded video, YouTube’s upload recommendations are separate from its live ingest settings. For 2160p at high frame rates—48, 50, or 60 fps—the recommendations are 53–68 Mbps for SDR and 66–85 Mbps for HDR. The upload page specifies variable bitrate and says no bitrate limit is required: these are recommendations, not mandatory caps. YouTube Help: upload encoding recommendations (publication date not stated; figures verified October 3, 2026).
| Finished-video upload | YouTube recommendation for 2160p at 48, 50, or 60 fps |
|---|---|
| SDR | 53–68 Mbps |
| HDR | 66–85 Mbps |
For uploads, YouTube also recommends encoding at the recorded frame rate, progressive scan, H.264 High Profile, and variable bitrate. A browser or device supporting VP9 is needed to view new 4K uploads in 4K; actual viewing options depend on the device and playback conditions.

Configure and check a live 4K60 stream
- Confirm the output format. For the default 16:9 aspect ratio, YouTube defines 2160p (4K) as 3840×2160. YouTube Help: resolution guidance (publication date not stated; verified October 3, 2026).
- Choose the live bitrate from the codec table. Use 35 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 50 Mbps for H.264 as the recommended 4K/60fps ingest setting. The corresponding minimums are 10 Mbps and 14 Mbps.
- Set rate control to CBR. YouTube’s live encoder settings specify constant bitrate.
- Set the keyframe interval to two seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Keep the frame rate at or below 60 fps. The listed RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings support frame rates up to 60 fps.
- Test your upload connection and the actual broadcast setup. YouTube Help says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Test with movement and audio similar to the planned stream, then monitor stream health during the event. YouTube’s guidance does not prescribe a universal upload-speed headroom multiplier.
What these bitrate numbers do—and do not—tell you
- Live ingest is not viewer playback. The selected live bitrate describes what your encoder sends to YouTube. YouTube transcodes that feed into multiple output formats; the ingest setting does not determine one fixed bitrate received by every viewer.
- Minimum does not mean visually equivalent. YouTube lists minimum live settings separately from its recommended settings, but does not promise that the minimum will look acceptable for every type of content.
- Upload recommendations are not caps. The finished-video upload guidance calls for variable bitrate and says no bitrate limit is required.
- SDR and HDR have different upload ranges. Choose the relevant upload recommendation rather than applying one figure to both.
