The stream URL tells your encoder where to send your video; the stream key is the credential YouTube uses to accept and associate that feed with your stream. In a typical RTMP or RTMPS setup, enter the URL in the encoder’s Server or URL field and the key in its Stream Key field. You usually need both, and they are not interchangeable.
What the stream URL and stream key do

YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” The practical distinction is that the URL is the destination and the key is the credential. Keep the key private, as you would a password. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
Where to enter them in an encoder
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and select an existing stream or create one.
- Copy the Stream URL shown for that stream and paste it into your encoder’s Server, URL, or RTMP Server field.
- Copy the stream key and paste it into the encoder’s Stream Key field.
- Start the encoder. For a scheduled stream, check that its preview appears in Live Control Room, then click Go live when you are ready to begin. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
If your encoder offers a YouTube streaming preset, YouTube recommends choosing it. Depending on the encoder, you may still need to provide the key. Follow the encoder’s field labels and protocol instructions rather than assuming the preset has filled everything in.
Do you need both?
For the common RTMP and RTMPS workflows, yes: provide the server URL and the key in their respective fields. The URL alone does not supply the stream credential, and the key alone does not tell the encoder which server to send the feed to.

RTMPS
RTMPS encrypts RTMP traffic using TLS/SSL. You still use a server URL and a stream key: choose the RTMPS URL provided in Live Control Room and enter the key in the encoder’s Stream Key field. YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS
HLS
YouTube’s HLS workflow differs: the stream key is already part of the URL, so a separate Stream Key field may not apply in the usual way. Check that the encoder is set to the HLS protocol and follow its instructions; do not paste the key a second time unless the encoder specifically requires it. YouTube Help: Set up an HLS stream

Protect or reset a stream key
Anyone with access to a stream key may be able to send a feed using it, so do not publish it or share it unnecessarily. If you think it has been exposed, reset it from the Stream tab in Live Control Room, then replace the old key in every encoder using that stream. YouTube says only channel owners and managers can reset a key; editors and viewers cannot.
Troubleshoot a connection or startup error
- Check the fields: make sure the URL is in the Server or URL field and the key is in Stream Key. A common setup mistake is swapping them.
- Confirm the protocol: use the URL for the selected protocol—RTMP, RTMPS, or HLS. HLS may include the key inside the URL.
- Refresh a possibly invalid key: for an error starting a third-party encoder, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends getting a new key and updating the encoder. This is one troubleshooting step, not proof that every startup error is caused by a bad key. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream
- If the software signs in instead of using a key: YouTube advises contacting that software’s support team when its encoder connection does not use a stream key.
- For a scheduled stream: after starting the encoder, check Live Control Room for the preview. Start the broadcast there with Go live when ready.
