Yes—YouTube Live accepts 4K/2160p video at up to 60 frames per second. To broadcast a prerecorded video, send it through a compatible encoder to a YouTube Live event, using the right codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and a tested upload connection. For the most control, use an encoder on your computer; for continuous playback without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo can loop uploaded video from the cloud.

What you need for a 4K/60 YouTube Live stream

  • A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions from the past 90 days. First-time live streaming activation can take up to 24 hours.
  • A prerecorded video and an encoder that can play it into a live output at 3840Ă—2160 and 60 fps.
  • A reliable upload connection capable of sustaining the encoder’s selected bitrate, with room for network variation.
  • A YouTube Live stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your stream.

YouTube’s encoder settings guide supports 4K/2160p at 60 fps and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Choose the encoder that fits your workflow

Software encoder on a computer

A software encoder gives you direct control over output settings and can play a local video into a live scene or output. The computer, encoder, and network connection must remain active for the duration of the broadcast. Confirm that your chosen software can output 3840Ă—2160 at 60 fps with a codec and bitrate you can sustain; capabilities vary by encoder and hardware.

Hardware encoder

A dedicated hardware encoder may suit a higher-production setup, but verify the exact model before buying or relying on it. Check that it supports 4K/60 output, the codec and bitrate you intend to use, RTMPS where available, and playback of the source you plan to broadcast. No particular model is established here as a verified end-to-end recommendation.

Cloud playback for continuous streams

YouTube’s encoder guide names Gyre as a cloud service for continuous prerecorded-video streaming and describes Full HD and 4K at 30/60 fps. That is a listing in YouTube’s guide, not an independent test; check the provider’s current specifications and terms.

StreamNeo is another cloud option for YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and start the stream. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer does not have to stay on.

Configure YouTube’s 4K/60 ingest settings

Use a bitrate appropriate to the codec

For 4K/60, YouTube publishes the following minimum and recommended encoder settings. These are platform settings, not a promise that your encoder or connection can sustain them.

Ingest codec YouTube minimum setting YouTube recommended setting
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps 35 Mbps
H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

Choose only a bitrate your encoder and upload connection can reliably maintain. YouTube advises checking upload speed and testing the stream. In practice, leave headroom above the video bitrate for connection fluctuations rather than treating a nominal internet plan speed as guaranteed sustained upload throughput.

Set frame size, frame rate, and keyframes

  • Set the encoder output to 3840Ă—2160 at 60 fps.
  • Use CBR and set the keyframe interval to two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Select an ingest codec supported by both your encoder and YouTube.
  • YouTube normally detects incoming resolution and frame rate. A custom stream key can be configured for manual resolution selection if needed.

SDR and HDR considerations

For a standard SDR stream, YouTube lists Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth. For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Make sure the encoder’s color and HDR settings match the actual source; a 4K frame size alone does not make a video HDR.

Know the latency tradeoff

YouTube does not offer its low-latency option for 4K/2160p streams. They are set to normal latency, so viewers should not expect low-latency interaction.

Start a prerecorded video as a YouTube Live event

  1. Confirm channel eligibility. In YouTube Studio, verify that live streaming is available for your channel. A newly enabled channel may need up to 24 hours before its first live stream can begin.
  2. Create or schedule the event. Open YouTube Studio and select Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Create a stream or select a scheduled stream, then set the event details and visibility you need. Exact controls can vary as YouTube updates Studio.
  3. Copy the ingest details. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder’s streaming settings. Keep the key private; do not include it in screenshots, public notes, or a video description.
  4. Load the video in the encoder. Select the prerecorded file or playlist and configure the output for 3840×2160, 60 fps, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and the codec-specific bitrate from YouTube’s table.
  5. Choose RTMPS if supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Use the RTMPS ingest address supplied by Live Control Room and supported by your encoder.
  6. Test the upload path. Run an upload-speed test, then test from the same computer, network, encoder, and settings you intend to use. A short speed-test result does not guarantee steady throughput throughout a longer broadcast.
  7. Rehearse the actual material. Start the encoder early and send a representative section with the same audio and visual movement as the full video. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages before the planned start.
  8. Start the event and monitor it. Confirm the encoder is sending, check that the preview looks and sounds right, and monitor stream health for interruptions or quality warnings. Check the public watch page if appropriate.
  9. Keep a local master. YouTube automatically archives 1440p and 2160p streams, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a local recording or source master rather than relying on the archive as your only copy.

Check rights and YouTube policy before broadcasting

A prerecorded video still has to comply with YouTube’s rules and copyright requirements when it is broadcast as Live. Use footage, music, narration, and other material you own or have permission to use; a video being prerecorded does not make it exempt from copyright enforcement. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming policies and any rights restrictions that apply to your material before scheduling an event. A stream that is permitted to upload may still be subject to separate rules or claims when broadcast live.

Troubleshoot common 4K/60 problems

You cannot start the event

Check channel verification and live-streaming eligibility. If this is the channel’s first live stream, activation may still be in progress and can take up to 24 hours. Also check Live Control Room for restrictions or setup prompts.

The preview is missing or the encoder will not connect

Confirm that the stream URL and key were copied correctly, that the key belongs to the selected event, and that the encoder is sending to the expected ingest address. If a key may have been exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.

The stream buffers, disconnects, or reports poor health

Compare actual sustained upload capacity with the selected bitrate, check for competing network use, and test again under realistic conditions. If the connection cannot hold the recommended setting, use a lower bitrate within YouTube’s supported settings rather than forcing a rate the connection cannot sustain. Check encoder and YouTube stream-health messages for the specific fault.

The stream is not 4K or not 60 fps

Verify the encoder’s outgoing resolution and frame rate, then check that the source itself supports those properties. YouTube normally detects the incoming format. If you need to set resolution manually, check whether the stream key is configured for manual resolution selection.

The image looks wrong in HDR

Confirm that the source is HDR and that the encoder’s color configuration matches it. For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) and does not support AV1 for HDR; for SDR, its listed baseline is Rec. 709 at 8-bit.
