To run recorded math lessons as a continuous YouTube live stream, enable live streaming on your channel, create a stream in YouTube Studio, and send your prerecorded video feed through an encoder using YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Preview and test the stream before relying on it, and plan how interruptions will be detected and restarted. YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours; its guidance does not establish that one stream can run indefinitely.
What you need before starting
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it in advance. Streamers must be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- An encoder: software running on a computer or dedicated hardware. For recorded lessons, choose a workflow that can play your prepared videos or playlist and restart it when needed. Dedicated hardware is not inherently required.
- Recorded lessons and any accompanying music, diagrams, images, or other assets that you have the right to use on a live stream.
- A reliable upload connection with enough available bandwidth for the encoder’s total streaming bitrate, plus a plan for monitoring the stream and responding to an interruption.
Set up the stream in YouTube Studio
- Enable live streaming. Verify the channel and check its live-stream status before the day you intend to launch. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation, as YouTube advises.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Create a stream or use the Manage tab to schedule one. Scheduling gives you a watch page to promote and lets viewers set reminders.
- Choose the encoder workflow. Use software if your playback can be managed on a computer, or hardware if your production depends on external audio/video equipment. Decide in advance how the recorded lesson sequence will be handed off, looped, and restarted. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports both software and hardware workflows; it does not make one universally best.
- Copy the connection details. In the stream’s settings, copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it, and reset it if you think it has been exposed. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Start the encoder and preview. Send the feed, then check Live Control Room for a video preview before starting the public broadcast. Check the watch page on your channel and on a mobile device so you know viewers can find and play it.
- Launch and monitor. Watch audio and video playback, connection health, and the public watch page. Establish who—or what system—will notice a dropped feed and how it will be restarted.
Test reliability before calling it 24/7
A continuous channel is an operating process, not just a stream key entered once. Test the full lesson playlist, including its transition from the last video back to the first, and confirm that audio remains present and synchronized. YouTube recommends setting up ahead of time, leaving bandwidth headroom, checking the preview, monitoring audio and video, and testing backup-encoder failover where applicable. Its guidance notes that the total streaming bitrate cannot exceed the available upload bandwidth; a connection that barely meets the encoder’s bitrate leaves less room for fluctuations. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Run a private or otherwise limited test before promoting the channel as continuously available.
- Confirm that the encoder can resume the intended lesson or playlist after a restart.
- Decide how interruptions will be detected and who can act if the encoder or computer stops.
- If you use a backup encoder, test the handoff rather than assuming it will work during an outage.
Plan for YouTube’s archive behavior
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. The official guidance cited here does not confirm that a single live stream can continue indefinitely. Do not promise an uninterrupted, forever-running broadcast on the strength of one stream. Build a restart plan or verify a continuous playout workflow that suits your schedule, and check the stream and archive behavior in practice before depending on it.
Keep lesson content and rights safe
Use original or properly licensed lesson materials, including music, images, diagrams, and clips. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects material, it may show a warning, replace the live stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. YouTube also notes that having a license may not prevent an interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel. Review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and its Content ID information before including third-party assets.

For a math channel, this applies beyond music: check rights to textbook pages, third-party diagrams, software interfaces, and any recorded guest or classroom material. Keep permission records accessible, and use your own explanations and visuals where rights are unclear.
Monetization is conditional
Eligible channels may be able to use live ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, or memberships, but access depends on channel and feature eligibility. Monetization also remains subject to YouTube’s policies; a continuous schedule alone does not guarantee eligibility or revenue. Check YouTube Partner Program eligibility and live-stream monetization features for the applicable requirements.
