If YouTube warns that your live-stream bitrate is too high, check the warning’s exact wording, then match your encoder’s video codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate to YouTube’s live-ingest recommendations. If your connection cannot reliably sustain that combination, lower the resolution and use its corresponding bitrate. Test the stream before the event and monitor Stream health in YouTube Studio.
First, identify what YouTube is flagging
Read the full message before changing settings. YouTube documents separate live-stream errors for video and audio, so an audio warning calls for checking the audio codec and bitrate—not blindly lowering the video bitrate. Confirm whether the warning names video bitrate, audio bitrate or another setting.
Also make sure you are looking at live-ingest guidance. YouTube’s recommended bitrates for uploading prerecorded videos are a separate table and should not be used to configure a live stream.
Match the live bitrate to codec, resolution and frame rate
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check the ingest resolution and frame rate selected for the stream. Unless you are using a variable-resolution entrypoint, YouTube says to use the exact bitrate for the resolution selected on the Ingestion Settings page. Then set the encoder’s video bitrate to the matching recommended value below. These are YouTube’s recommended live-ingest settings, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain them. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
All values are in Mbps. If your encoder asks for Kbps, multiply Mbps by 1,000—for example, 14 Mbps is 14,000 Kbps.
| Resolution and frame rate | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2160p at 60 fps | 10 | 35 | 14 | 50 |
| 2160p at 30 fps | 8 | 30 | 11 | 42 |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 6 | 24 | 8 | 34 |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 5 | 15 | 7 | 21 |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 4 | 12 | 6 | 17 |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 4 | 10 | 5 | 14 |
| 720p at 60 fps | 2 | 6 | 3 | 8 |
| 720p at 30 fps | 2 | 6 | 3 | 8 |
| 480p at 30 fps | 0.3 | 3 | 0.4 | 4 |
| 360p at 30 fps | 0.3 | 3 | 0.4 | 4 |
For example, the recommended H.264 live-ingest bitrate is 14 Mbps at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60. Do not choose a higher resolution simply because the encoder offers it: the connection must sustain the selected mode reliably.

Check connection capacity and lower resolution if needed
- Run an upload speed test. YouTube recommends a speed test to check upload bitrate. Treat the result as a planning check, not proof that a connection will remain steady throughout a live event. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
- Compare capacity with your chosen live mode. Consider whether the upload connection can reliably carry the selected bitrate. If it cannot, choose a lower resolution and frame rate, then set the matching bitrate from the table.
- Test the stream before going public. Include audio and movement similar to the real program so the test reflects the material you plan to stream.
- Watch Stream health and messages. During the test and event, check the Live Control Room for health warnings and follow the specific message shown.
YouTube’s live error guidance says, “If you don’t have enough bandwidth for the resolution that you chose, consider lowering your chosen resolution.” YouTube’s live streaming error messages.
Verify the other encoder settings
Correct bitrate alone may not resolve a warning about another encoder setting. YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. It recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. For audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3; its listed stereo audio bitrate is 128 Kbps. If YouTube names an audio issue, check those audio settings rather than altering video bitrate without cause. See YouTube’s full live encoder settings.

Common causes and fixes
- The bitrate does not match the selected ingest resolution. Check the Ingestion Settings page and use the recommended bitrate for the selected codec and mode. If the entrypoint is not variable-resolution, follow YouTube’s instruction to use the exact bitrate for the selected resolution.
- The connection cannot reliably sustain the selected mode. Run an upload speed test, then lower resolution or frame rate and choose the corresponding recommended bitrate.
- The warning is about audio, not video. Confirm the audio codec and bitrate; the YouTube error documentation separates audio and video messages.
- The encoder uses an unsuitable live configuration. Check for CBR, an accepted video codec and a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds).
- The settings appear correct but the warning persists during the test. Re-read the full Live Control Room message, verify the encoder is actually sending the settings you selected, and test again while watching Stream health. YouTube’s guidance does not publish a single fix-success rate or a universal upload-headroom percentage, so use the warning and connection behavior to choose a sustainable mode.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded program that should loop on YouTube, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection left on, supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera.
