720p vs 1080p

YouTube Live Streaming at 720p vs. 1080p on a 10 Mbps Connection

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If 10 Mbps is your measured, stable upload speed, 720p is generally the safer choice for a YouTube live stream. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of available upload bandwidth unused, giving you roughly 8 Mbps for the total stream as a planning estimate. That is tight for YouTube’s recommended H.264 720p bitrate once audio and network variation are considered, but H.264 1080p’s recommended bitrate is higher still. If 10 Mbps is your download speed or advertised plan speed, test upload before choosing either resolution.

First check what “10 Mbps” measures

For a live stream, the relevant figure is upload speed: the capacity of your connection to send video to YouTube. A download result or an ISP plan’s advertised speed does not establish that capacity. YouTube notes that download bandwidth is often higher than upload bandwidth, recommends testing upload, and advises leaving 20% headroom. With a steady 10 Mbps upload, applying that guidance gives an approximate 8 Mbps planning budget for the total stream—not a guaranteed safe limit. The total includes audio and other stream traffic, and the available capacity can vary, particularly on a shared network. YouTube Help’s streaming tips explain the distinction and headroom advice.

720p vs. 1080p: YouTube’s live encoder bitrates

YouTube’s live encoder recommendations distinguish resolution, frame rate, and codec. The figures below are for live-stream ingestion, not uploaded video files. YouTube Help’s current table was accessed on 2026-10-03; the page does not show a publication year. “Minimum” is not the same as the recommended target.

Resolution and frame rate H.264 minimum H.264 recommended AV1/H.265 minimum AV1/H.265 recommended
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps 2 Mbps 6 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps 4 Mbps 12 Mbps

These are YouTube’s listed video bitrate settings, not a promise about what every viewer will see. Use the row for the codec and frame rate you actually configure. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Which resolution fits a 10 Mbps upload?

H.264: 720p is the safer starting point

At H.264 720p, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for both 30 and 60 fps. That is already equal to the approximate total-stream planning budget from a stable 10 Mbps upload before accounting for audio and fluctuations, so test the actual configuration and consider a more conservative bitrate if conditions warrant. Do not assume the nominal speed will be continuously available.

H.264 1080p30: a tested compromise, not the recommended target

YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum for H.264 1080p30 and 14 Mbps as its recommendation. The minimum may fit within the approximate 8 Mbps planning budget, but it is below YouTube’s recommended setting and leaves less room for variability and audio. If you need 1080p, test at the intended frame rate and bitrate with representative audio and motion; switch down if stream health becomes unstable.

H.264 1080p60: difficult to justify at this upload speed

The listed H.264 minimum is 6 Mbps, while the recommendation is 17 Mbps. The recommended rate is well beyond the approximate budget, and even the minimum leaves less margin for audio and network variation. If smooth motion matters more than resolution, 720p60 is a more practical option to test; use 1080p30 only after verifying it under real conditions.

AV1 or H.265: use the matching row, but keep headroom in view

Do not apply H.264 figures to AV1 or H.265. YouTube recommends 6 Mbps for 720p and 10 Mbps for 1080p30 in these codecs; 1080p60 is recommended at 12 Mbps. The recommended 1080p rates do not leave YouTube’s suggested 20% headroom on a 10 Mbps upload. Codec support and settings depend on the encoder you use.

How to choose and verify a setting

  1. Measure upload speed. Run a speed test on the connection and at the location you will stream from. YouTube specifically recommends testing upload bitrate. If the result is only a download speed, it cannot answer whether 720p or 1080p will hold.
  2. Choose codec and frame rate. Match the corresponding row in YouTube’s live table. Resolution alone does not determine the bitrate requirement: 1080p30 and 1080p60 have different recommendations, as do H.264 and AV1/H.265.
  3. Leave capacity unused. Apply YouTube’s 20% headroom advice to available upload capacity. Treat the resulting figure as a planning guide, not a guarantee; audio, other traffic, shared network use, and speed variation matter.
  4. Test a representative stream before the event. Use audio and movement similar to what you will stream. YouTube advises testing before going live; a static screen alone may not reveal how the intended content behaves.
  5. Monitor stream health and messages while live. If the stream becomes unstable, reduce bitrate or step down from 1080p to 720p, then confirm the revised stream health.

These checks matter more than the speed printed on a plan: YouTube notes that other users and devices sharing a network can limit the bandwidth available to your stream. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers testing and monitoring.

Keep latency separate from resolution

Latency is the delay between an encoder or camera capturing an event and its appearance in the stream. It is a separate setting from 720p versus 1080p; choosing lower latency can increase playback buffering. Consider the interaction trade-off independently rather than assuming a resolution change will solve latency. See YouTube Help’s live stream settings.

Troubleshooting an unstable stream

  • The stream drops or health warnings appear: Check that the bitrate does not exceed available upload capacity, account for the 20% headroom guidance, and test again. If necessary, lower bitrate or resolution.
  • A 10 Mbps result still does not hold: Confirm it is upload speed, repeat the test during the time and on the network you will stream, and check whether other people or devices are using the shared connection.
  • 1080p looks unreliable at the listed minimum: Remember that minimum is not YouTube’s recommendation. Test the full setup with representative audio and movement; if instability remains, use a lower bitrate or 720p.
  • The settings seem inconsistent: Verify the selected codec and frame rate, then use that exact row in YouTube’s live encoder table. Do not substitute the separate recommendations for uploaded videos.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous YouTube channel built from uploaded recordings rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo keeps the stream running from the cloud: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams uploaded videos—not a camera—and is for YouTube only.
