To stop YouTube from choosing a different playback quality, open the live stream’s player settings, choose Quality, and select a specific available resolution instead of Auto. This sets playback for you; it does not change the resolution the creator sends to YouTube, and YouTube may not offer every resolution on every device or stream.
Set a fixed playback quality on the live stream
On a computer or TV
- Open the live stream and select the player’s Settings gear icon.
- Select Quality.
- Choose the resolution you want, such as 720p or 1080p, from the available options. Do not leave it on Auto if you want to make the choice yourself.
The selection applies to your playback, not to other viewers. Available options depend on the stream and the device, browser, or app being used. YouTube’s instructions for computers and TVs are in its Change the quality of your video help page.
On Android or iPhone and iPad
- Open the live stream and tap the player, then tap Settings.
- Tap Quality.
- Choose Advanced when it appears, then select an available resolution.
Depending on the video and app, the menu may instead show options such as Auto, Higher picture quality, or Data saver. Advanced resolution selection is not available for every video. You can also set default quality preferences for Wi-Fi and mobile networks in the YouTube app’s video quality preferences; those preferences are not the same as selecting a resolution for the live stream currently playing. What “lock” does—and why quality can still change
A manual resolution selection tells the player which available rendition you prefer. Auto lets YouTube adapt playback to viewing conditions. YouTube says it considers connection speed, player or screen size, the source quality, and browser support. Its stated goal is: “To give you the best viewing experience, YouTube changes the quality of your video stream based on your viewing conditions.”

A manual choice is not a guarantee against buffering or a promise that YouTube will offer that resolution continuously. If your chosen option disappears or playback struggles, the stream, device, browser, or connection may not support that quality reliably. Try a lower available resolution if you would rather have smoother playback than a sharper picture.

If the resolution keeps dropping or the option is missing
Check the factors YouTube identifies before assuming the app is malfunctioning. A large player or screen does not create a higher-quality source, and a fast connection cannot add a rendition that the stream does not provide.

- Connection conditions: If the connection is inconsistent, try again on a more stable network. If the problem happens only on Wi-Fi, check whether coverage is weak where you are watching. A wired connection may help diagnose unstable Wi-Fi on a computer or TV, but it does not lock resolution.
- Player or screen size: YouTube considers the player size when choosing quality automatically. Try a manual selection from the resolutions that are actually listed.
- Source quality: The live stream may not have a high-resolution rendition available. A viewer cannot select a quality above what YouTube has available for that stream.
- Device, app, or browser support: Some devices and browsers do not support every high-quality format. Try the YouTube app or another supported browser if a quality option is missing, while recognizing that the stream itself may still limit the choices.
For mobile-specific controls, consult YouTube’s quality settings instructions. Availability and labels can vary by device, app version, browser, stream, and region.
If you are the creator: set the incoming stream resolution
The creator’s encoder resolution and a viewer’s playback selection are separate controls. YouTube defaults to automatically detecting the encoder’s resolution and frame rate. To specify the incoming resolution, configure a custom stream key and set the manual stream resolution in Live Control Room. The exact controls depend on the encoder setup; follow YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance.

Setting a manual ingestion resolution does not force every viewer to watch at that resolution. YouTube transcodes live streams into renditions intended for different devices and network conditions, and viewers can choose among those available in their players.

These are YouTube’s creator ingestion recommendations in its current live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026. They are not the internet speed a viewer needs, nor a guarantee that viewers will receive the same resolution. YouTube’s page lists recommendations by codec, resolution, and frame rate; check it for the full settings that match your encoder and stream.

Does YouTube Premium lock live-stream quality?
No. YouTube says 1080p Premium is an enhanced-bitrate option for eligible uploaded videos, not live streams. It is not a way to lock a live stream to 1080p.
