Back up both your OBS Profile and Scene Collection before updating, then verify the production setup and test it afterward. If the stream drops, check OBS’s automatic reconnect setting—but don’t assume the update caused the interruption: a network, ingest-server, or YouTube broadcast issue can produce the same symptom.
Before updating: back up the complete OBS setup
OBS keeps different parts of a stream in separate places. A Profile includes stream, video, and output settings, but does not include scenes. Back up both items so you can restore the destination and encoding configuration as well as the scenes and sources.
- Export the Profile. In OBS, open the Profile menu and choose Export to save a JSON backup. OBS documents Profile export for backup or transfer to another installation; Profiles store Stream, Video, and Output settings. OBS Profiles guide.
- Back up the Scene Collection separately. Use the Scene Collection menu to export it, or make a separate copy of the relevant OBS configuration data. Confirm the backup exists somewhere outside the active OBS configuration folder.
- Record anything that would be difficult to reconstruct. Note the selected Profile and Scene Collection, streaming service and server, output settings, and any required source/plugin setup. Keep stream keys private; do not put one in a public backup or screenshot.
For a stream that must remain unattended, use the latest stable OBS release rather than a beta or test build. OBS’s 2026-06-23 beta announcement recommends stable builds for production and tells beta testers to back up Profiles and Scene Collections. That is beta-testing guidance, not evidence that routine stable updates commonly stop streams. OBS Studio 32.2 Beta announcement.
After updating: verify the actual live configuration
Before leaving a sleep-sounds broadcast unattended, open OBS and check the same setup you intend to use for production. An update can coincide with a problem without being its cause, so verify each layer rather than relying on the timing alone.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Profile and scenes: load the intended Profile and Scene Collection. Check that the sleep-sounds media source or playlist is present, enabled, and playing as intended.
- Destination: confirm the streaming service and server are correct and that OBS has the intended stream key or connected account. If you replace a key, keep it private.
- Output: review the active output configuration and confirm the stream starts at the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate appropriate to your connection and destination.
- Audio and playback: watch and listen to a controlled test. Confirm the audio is present, the loop behaves as expected, and no source has become unavailable.
- Recovery: verify that Automatic Reconnect is enabled and that its retry interval and retry count suit the length of interruption you want OBS to attempt to recover from.
OBS’s overview guide places Automatic Reconnect under Settings → Advanced. Labels may vary slightly by OBS version. OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Set automatic reconnect for brief interruptions
- Open Settings → Advanced.
- Find the Network section and enable Automatically Reconnect.
- Review the retry delay and maximum retries. Choose a retry window long enough for the kind of brief connection interruption you expect, then test it deliberately before relying on it.
- Apply the settings, start a controlled stream, and confirm OBS resumes sending after a brief interruption.
Automatic reconnect is a recovery aid, not an uptime guarantee. OBS can stop trying after the configured retries are exhausted; it cannot by itself fix a crashed OBS process, a persistent network failure, or a destination broadcast that has ended. An OBS forum reply dated 2025-08-15 also recommends checking this setting and increasing retries when a connection takes longer to return. If the stream still stops: isolate the cause
OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide says dropped frames and intermittent disconnections point to a connection problem between the computer and the remote ingest server. The cause may be outside OBS. Check these possibilities in order, changing one thing at a time so you can identify what helped.
- Unstable connection or bitrate too high: check whether the connection can sustain the configured bitrate, including normal variation in upload capacity. Reduce the bitrate for a test if the connection is marginal.
- Ingest-server issue: try another available ingest server and test again.
- Firewall, security software, or VPN interference: check whether these are blocking or disrupting OBS’s connection. Change security settings cautiously; do not leave essential protection disabled as a permanent workaround.
- Local hardware or system load: check for resource pressure or other hardware problems while streaming.
- ISP or route problem: if the connection remains unreliable after local checks, contact your internet provider.
These checks follow OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated 2024-09-30. The fact that a failure first appeared after an update is a useful clue to investigate, but the timing alone does not establish that OBS caused it.

Check YouTube’s broadcast behavior separately
OBS reconnects its outgoing stream; YouTube controls whether the destination broadcast remains open to receive it. An OBS community resource describes using a scheduled YouTube broadcast with Auto-stop disabled so the broadcast can remain available for a later reconnection. It also notes that YouTube may eventually end a broadcast after multiple hours without incoming stream data. This guidance is specific to YouTube and is not a general rule for other platforms. OBS community resource: How to stream to YouTube with OBS Studio.
If OBS shows that it is reconnecting but the YouTube broadcast is no longer live, inspect the broadcast’s status and settings in YouTube Studio. OBS cannot reopen a broadcast that YouTube has ended.

Use launch options only as part of a tested workflow
OBS documents launch parameters including --startstreaming, profile and scene-collection selection, and --disable-updater (listed for Windows and macOS). These options can support a planned startup or update process, but starting OBS automatically does not ensure that the application, network, or destination will stay healthy. Test any automated workflow with the exact Profile and Scene Collection before using it on an unattended channel. OBS Launch Parameters.
