For 5.1 surround, use 48 kHz and 384 kbps. These are YouTube’s recommended live-encoder settings; choose the pair that matches the channel layout you are actually sending.
YouTube Live audio settings at a glance
| Audio layout | Recommended sample rate | Recommended audio bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| Stereo | 44.1 kHz | 128 kbps |
| 5.1 surround | 48 kHz | 384 kbps |
YouTube lists these recommendations for both RTMP/RTMPS and HLS live ingest. They are not promises that every encoder presents identical labels or defaults; locate the audio sample-rate and bitrate controls in your encoder and set the values there. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and HLS ingest guidance.
Which sample rate and bitrate should you choose?
Stereo: 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps
Use this pair when your program audio is stereo. For most live documentary screenings, interviews, narration, and music presented in two-channel stereo, this is the relevant YouTube recommendation.
5.1 surround: 48 kHz, 384 kbps
Choose this only when your production and encoder are sending a genuine 5.1 mix. Setting an encoder to 5.1 does not turn a stereo source into surround sound; the source, channel mapping, and ingest configuration need to match.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube’s guidance does not establish that one layout is universally better. Match the setting to the intended channel layout and your encoder workflow rather than selecting the higher numbers by default.
Audio codec and ingest protocol
RTMP or RTMPS
YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio. For 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube specifies AAC only. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Its platform transcodes incoming live streams into multiple output formats for viewers.

HLS
YouTube’s HLS guidance lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 audio, and gives the same recommended sample rates and bitrates for stereo and 5.1. HLS sends video in segments rather than continuously, so YouTube notes that it has higher latency. Its reviewed setup guidance calls for 1–4 second segments and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.
Do not substitute YouTube’s upload-encoding recommendations for live ingest settings: uploads and live streams have separate guidance.

Set and check the audio before going live
- Confirm the production layout. Decide whether the stream is stereo or 5.1 based on the program mix and delivery workflow.
- Match your encoder settings. Set the sample rate and audio bitrate to the corresponding values in the table. Select a supported codec for your ingest protocol; for RTMP/RTMPS 5.1, use AAC.
- Run a representative test. YouTube advises testing before the live event with audio and video movement similar to what the event will contain. Check that the intended channels are present and that speech and other program audio are audible.
- Monitor the live event. Watch YouTube’s stream health and review any messages while streaming so you can respond to reported problems.
YouTube does not prescribe a particular microphone, interface, mixer, or other physical device for these checks. The important test is the encoded stream you intend to deliver.
Common setting problems
- Audio is missing or unexpectedly quiet: Check that the encoder is receiving the intended source, that it is not muted, and that the selected audio stream is included in the output. Then test the encoded stream before the event.
- 5.1 audio does not work over RTMP/RTMPS: Confirm that the encoder is using AAC, the supported codec for 5.1 on that protocol, and that the incoming mix is actually 5.1.
- The stream is stereo despite selecting 5.1: Verify the source channel layout and encoder channel mapping; a setting alone cannot create missing surround channels.
- You see health warnings during a broadcast: Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and the outgoing encoder configuration. The recommended audio values do not, by themselves, diagnose network or video-encoding issues.
