If OBS closes, viewers may lose the live feed; restarting OBS does not guarantee that YouTube will resume the same broadcast. The reliable approach is layered: make the local OBS process recoverable, separately check the destination’s reconnect behavior, and reduce network failures that can interrupt a still-running OBS session.
First, identify what failed
“OBS crashed” can describe two different problems. If OBS has closed, the encoder process stopped. If OBS is still open but reports dropped frames or a disconnection, the computer may have lost a stable connection to the platform’s ingest server, or the configured bitrate may exceed what the connection can sustain. OBS says repeated dropped frames can lead to disconnection. These failures need different fixes. OBS Project’s connection troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024, covers the network case.

A watchdog can relaunch a stopped process. It cannot, by itself, ensure the platform accepts the new connection, restore the same live event, or prevent viewers from seeing an interruption.
Make OBS recoverable without assuming the broadcast is recovered
Use a supervisor appropriate to your setup
An external process supervisor or an operating-system restart policy can be configured to detect that OBS has exited and launch it again. The correct implementation depends on your operating system, how OBS is launched, and whether the stream destination is configured for a reusable or scheduled event. There is no safe, universal task or service recipe that applies to every combination.

Test the whole chain deliberately before relying on unattended operation: confirm the supervisor detects an OBS exit, confirm OBS opens with the intended profile and stream configuration, and confirm the destination handles the new encoder connection as you expect. A successful relaunch is not proof that viewers returned to the same live event.
Use OBS automation carefully
OBS WebSocket has been included by default since OBS Studio 28 and provides an interface for external control and automation. It makes automation possible; it is not a complete built-in crash watchdog or an end-to-end broadcast recovery guarantee. OBS recommends password protection for WebSocket to prevent unauthorized control. Keep its access restricted and protect it with a password if you enable it. See OBS’s remote-control guide.

Fix dropped frames and network disconnects separately
- Try another ingest server. A different server may avoid a problematic route. Follow OBS’s network troubleshooting guidance and test whether the connection stabilizes.
- Set bitrate below your stable upload capacity. OBS’s 2024 guide gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee. Measure the connection under the conditions when the stream runs, leave room for variation, and stay within the destination’s current limits. A fluctuating connection may need a lower bitrate.
- Prefer wired Ethernet over Wi-Fi. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable. A suitable Cat 6 Ethernet cable can connect a streaming computer to the router, but it will not fix a crash, inadequate upload capacity, or a faulty ISP route.
- Check the rest of the network path. OBS identifies security software, VPNs, bundled network utilities, outdated network drivers, routers, modems, and other network hardware as possible contributors. Investigate them systematically; if OBS’s steps do not resolve the issue, contact your ISP.
Change one factor at a time and observe the stream long enough to determine whether the problem recurs. A brief improvement is not evidence that an unattended 24/7 setup is stable.
Confirm YouTube’s live and kids-content settings
If YouTube is your destination, verify both the channel’s eligibility and the event’s settings before testing recovery. YouTube Help says live-stream access requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; it also says the person live streaming must be at least 16 years old. The age rule concerns the operator, not the audience. See YouTube’s live-streaming access requirements.

YouTube requires creators to set the audience for live streams. Set it accurately in YouTube Studio: content made for children must be identified as such. YouTube says Made for Kids designation restricts features including live chat and notifications. Do not change the audience designation to preserve features. After a restart, verify the platform’s current live workflow and the event’s audience setting. See YouTube’s guidance on setting your audience.
Choose an architecture that matches the failure you need to tolerate
If a local computer is the weak link, consider whether a different encoding architecture better fits a continuous stream. A platform’s setup requirements and recovery behavior still matter whichever encoder you choose.

YouTube’s encoder documentation describes Upstream.so as a cloud studio for 24/7 streams and lists AJA HELO Plus as a standalone hardware option. These are categories to evaluate, not guarantees that either will automatically recover a particular event. YouTube explains that “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” Consult YouTube’s encoder setup guide, then verify current product details and the destination’s recovery behavior before choosing.
