You can keep a YouTube radio stream running while your own computer is off by placing the audio or video files on a virtual private server (VPS), running an encoder there, and sending its output to YouTube Live. The VPS keeps the process online, but it does not configure the encoder, secure your music rights, or guarantee recovery by itself. You still need to test the full setup and arrange monitoring and restarts.
How the setup works
The signal path is: media files or a playlist → encoder running on the VPS → YouTube Live ingest → viewers. YouTube receives a live feed from the encoder; it does not fetch your playlist from the VPS on its own. For a radio-style channel, the source can be audio with a static image or video content, depending on how you want the stream to appear.
A VPS in India is one possible location for the server, not a guarantee of low latency or a reliable route to YouTube’s ingest servers. Choose a provider based on its current region availability, sustained outbound-transfer terms, CPU allocation if you will encode in software, support, and recovery options. No particular India VPS provider, plan, price, or route performance is established here.
Check YouTube eligibility and create a stream
- Verify the channel and check its live-stream status. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days, and streamers must be at least 16. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do it before you plan to launch. See YouTube’s eligibility requirements and encoder setup guidance.
- Create the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Set up the stream and retrieve the ingest URL and stream key using YouTube’s encoder instructions. The key identifies where the encoder sends the feed and allows YouTube to accept it; treat it as a password. Do not expose it in screenshots, public command histories, or logs. YouTube explains stream-key settings here.
- Pick the broadcast format and visibility deliberately. Decide whether the test should be private or unlisted and whether the finished stream is intended to be public. Verify the audio, image, title, and stream-health status in YouTube’s preview before sharing it.
Choose the VPS and prepare the media
Check capacity against the workload
Read the provider’s current terms for the VPS region, sustained outbound transfer, CPU allocation, and any relevant service limits. A stream sending an already encoded file without changing its audio or video has different processing demands from one that resizes or re-encodes media. That is a workload distinction, not a guarantee about a particular VPS plan; test the selected machine with your actual source and settings.

Put the source where the encoder can read it
Upload the media files or playlist to storage accessible to the VPS, and check file paths, permissions, available disk space, and playlist order. Keep credentials out of media files and scripts that are readable by other users. If you need a replay, plan a separate recording: a continuous live feed should not be your only copy of the material.
Configure the encoder for YouTube Live
Use YouTube’s current encoder table rather than choosing bitrate by guesswork. YouTube’s published guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with no more than four seconds. It recommends RTMPS where available for encrypted transport. Check the current encoder settings and Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide when configuring your encoder.

Published H.264 starting points
The following are YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates in its encoder guidance accessed on 2026-10-03; they are not measured minimum VPS capacities. Other codecs and settings can have different recommendations.
| Output format | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds) and 128 Kbps for stereo audio. These figures are from the same YouTube encoder guidance. Confirm the recommended bitrate for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate in that table rather than extrapolating from the H.264 examples.

Choose whether to copy or re-encode
- Send pre-encoded media without re-encoding: This avoids the added encoding workload and preserves the file’s existing encoded quality, but the media must be compatible with the intended YouTube stream settings. Validate the actual files and monitor the output.
- Re-encode on the VPS: This lets you set or change output resolution and codec, but uses CPU or other available encoding resources. Check the VPS allocation against the workload and test it under continuous operation; no particular plan size is established as sufficient.
For a looping playlist, configure the encoder or playback process to advance through the intended files and return to the beginning. A secondary VPS tutorial describes an FFmpeg looping pattern, but it is an example implementation, not official YouTube guidance or a tested guarantee of continuous service: VPS 24/7 livestream setup guide. Exact commands and service configuration depend on the VPS operating system, media format, encoder version, and YouTube endpoint. Test the implementation on your own system and do not put a real stream key into a command that may be saved in shell history or exposed in logs.
Make the broadcast survive process failures
An always-on server is not the same thing as an always-on broadcast. The encoder can stop, the VPS can lose connectivity, or YouTube can stop receiving the feed. Configure an operating-system service supervisor or equivalent restart strategy for your encoder, protect its stream-key configuration, and inspect logs after failures. A restart policy can restart a process; it cannot prove the media is correct or prevent every interruption.

- Start the encoder with a short test playlist and confirm that YouTube receives the expected audio and picture.
- Check YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators for errors before publishing. YouTube recommends testing in advance and monitoring stream health in its encoder guidance and live-stream tips.
- Restart the encoder or VPS during a controlled test and verify that your configured recovery method works and that the feed resumes as expected.
- Review the logs and access controls after a failure. Remove any exposed key from scripts, histories, or logs and replace it if it may have been compromised.
Plan for long-stream archives and DVR limits
A stream longer than 12 hours carries a replay risk: YouTube says it may not capture a stream that exceeds that duration at all. YouTube recommends a local recording backup if keeping the broadcast matters. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. See the current archive guidance and DVR guidance.
If archive access is important, decide whether one continuous broadcast is the right format or whether shorter scheduled sessions better fit your publishing needs. YouTube’s guidance does not require you to split a stream, and shorter sessions do not guarantee an archive. Keep a separate recording if replay is important, and test your workflow.

Clear the music-rights and channel-policy checks
Being able to play a track does not establish that you can rebroadcast it. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the content provider to hold the necessary rights for use of live content on Google services, including applicable music rights, and to meet applicable territory requirements. YouTube’s terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Read the YouTube live-stream terms and confirm that your licenses cover the catalog, live use, relevant territories, and any replay or archive you intend to keep. The rights needed depend on those specifics; no license can be inferred for an unspecified music library.
The platform guidance cited here is YouTube’s general channel and encoder guidance, not a special rule for India. It does not establish the best Indian data-center location, route quality from a particular VPS provider, or the licensing obligations for a specific catalog in India. Check the actual provider terms and applicable rights for the server, audience, and music you use.
Common problems and practical fixes
| Symptom | Likely checks and corrective action |
|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Confirm that live streaming is enabled, the encoder is running, the ingest URL and key match the current stream, and the VPS can reach the endpoint. Keep the key private; replace it if exposed. |
| Audio or video is missing or unstable | Check that the source files are readable and compatible, inspect encoder output and YouTube’s stream-health warnings, and compare the selected codec, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current encoder table. |
| The encoder stops and the stream ends | Inspect the process logs and VPS status, then check whether the supervisor or restart strategy actually relaunches the encoder. Test recovery deliberately; a VPS alone does not restart a failed process. |
| Viewers cannot rewind or find an archive | Check the duration and YouTube’s archive and DVR guidance. A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured, and DVR can be limited or unavailable on longer streams. Maintain a separate recording if you need a replay. |
| The broadcast receives a music-rights claim or restriction | Review the rights for each track, the intended live use, territories, and replay rights. Do not assume that a track’s availability for personal playback permits a public live rebroadcast. |
