The best free option for most creators who already own a gaming PC is OBS Studio, running on that PC and sending gameplay to YouTube through its encoder workflow. OBS is free and open source, and YouTube says encoder streams are commonly used for gaming. The trade-off is that your PC, power, and internet connection must keep working. A stream that stays live for 24 hours is also not necessarily saved as a complete 24-hour replay.
Which 24/7 streaming option should you choose?
| Option | Software cost | What must keep running | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo, a cloud service for uploaded videos | First day free, no card; see current plans. | StreamNeo runs the uploaded video from the cloud; you do not need to leave your home computer on. | A creator who wants a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded videos without a PC running at home. | It plays uploaded videos, not live gameplay from a gaming PC or camera. |
| OBS Studio on an existing gaming PC | Free software. | The gaming PC, OBS, and internet connection. | Creators who want to broadcast live gameplay and already have a suitable PC. | Power, connectivity, game or encoder crashes can interrupt the broadcast; ongoing monitoring is needed. |
| YouTube’s other encoder paths or another encoder | YouTube service is used; costs for other encoders vary. | The selected device and its connection. | Creators with a workflow that suits a different encoder or device. | Not every path is designed for continuous gameplay, and paid encoder software may add cost. |
| Other cloud-hosted encoder or gaming setup | Whether a suitable option is free is not established here. | Provider infrastructure and a way to supply the game video. | Creators who need a home PC off while still supplying gameplay. | Check the current price, gaming capability, uptime terms, and stream limits before relying on a provider. |
For live PC gameplay at no software cost, OBS on hardware you already own is the most direct route. StreamNeo is a different kind of solution: it keeps uploaded video running on YouTube from the cloud, rather than encoding a live game session. Compare options by ongoing cost, local hardware requirements, encoding performance while playing, disconnect recovery, monitoring needs, and whether a complete replay matters. No option can promise uninterrupted YouTube delivery based on the sources cited here.
What you need before setting up OBS
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restriction from the previous 90 days. YouTube’s current Help guidance also says streamers must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A gaming PC capable of running the game and encoding a stream at settings it can sustain. There is no single resolution or bitrate that is right for every PC and internet connection; use YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and choose settings your system can maintain.
- OBS Studio, downloaded from the official OBS Project Help Portal. OBS describes its software as free and open source.
- A stable internet connection and a plan to monitor the broadcast. For long sessions, consider a local recording if keeping a replay matters.
Set up a YouTube gaming stream with OBS
- Make sure livestreaming is available on your channel. Complete YouTube’s verification and eligibility requirements before the planned broadcast. Restrictions may prevent the channel from going live.
- Install OBS Studio. Use the official OBS Project site rather than treating a third-party mirror as necessary. Add a game-capture source and any overlays or audio sources your broadcast needs. Check the scene so it does not expose unwanted notifications or other on-screen content.
- Create or select an encoder stream in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s guide, Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder, describes the sequence. Copy the server URL and stream key from the stream setup.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select the YouTube service or a custom server as appropriate, then enter the server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to connect an encoder to your stream. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Use RTMPS when available and select sustainable output settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingestion. Follow YouTube’s current encoder guidance for resolution, bitrate, and other settings; the suitable values depend on your connection and encoding hardware. A setting that overloads the PC or saturates the upload connection can cause dropped frames or unstable video.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Start streaming in OBS, then watch the preview and stream health in Live Control Room. Complete YouTube’s Go Live action if it is prompted. Confirm that the game picture, game audio, and microphone or other intended audio are present.
- Plan how the stream will run unattended. Keep the game and scene in a state suitable for continuous viewing, and monitor the broadcast for connection problems, crashes, or unexpected content. A local OBS setup does not provide a researched guarantee of automatic recovery after a power loss, internet outage, or application failure.
- Record locally if the broadcast must be preserved. YouTube recommends checking that the local archive file is growing during a stream. That local recording can be a backup if YouTube does not retain a complete archive.
Why a 24-hour live broadcast may not become a 24-hour replay
Live duration and replay availability are separate. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while longer streams may not be captured at all. Its guidance states: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” YouTube Help: Archive live streams.
YouTube also warns that DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. YouTube Help: Turn on DVR on live streams. If viewers need to rewind reliably or you need an archive, consider running shorter broadcast sessions and retaining a local recording. Do not assume a single continuous 24-hour stream will leave a complete replay on your channel.

Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube will not let the channel go live: check that the channel is verified, that livestreaming is enabled, and that no live-streaming restriction from the prior 90 days applies. Review YouTube’s eligibility guidance.
- Live Control Room does not receive the OBS feed: check that OBS has the correct server URL and current stream key, that streaming is started in OBS, and that the network permits the connection. If the key may have been exposed, reset it rather than sharing it.
- The preview is unstable or video drops frames: reduce output demands until the PC can encode reliably, and consult YouTube’s recommended settings. Avoid assuming that one bitrate or resolution works for every machine and connection.
- The stream stops after a PC or internet failure: a local encoder depends on local power and connectivity. Restore the game and OBS, reconnect using the stream setup, and check the YouTube preview before resuming. Arrange monitoring or a recovery plan if a long interruption is unacceptable; automatic recovery is not guaranteed by this setup.
- The broadcast ended but no full replay appears: check the stream duration. YouTube says a stream beyond 12 hours may not be archived, so use shorter sessions and verify a local recording when a complete replay matters.
- There is no game audio, microphone, or expected image: inspect the OBS scene’s selected capture source and audio inputs, then verify the result in YouTube’s preview before leaving the stream unattended.
