You can turn your own older gameplay recordings into a YouTube live stream by sending their video and audio through an encoder connected to YouTube Live. YouTube supports encoder-based broadcasts, including gaming, but its guidance does not describe a dedicated feature for looping prerecorded files into a continuous channel. You will need to arrange file playback or a playlist in your chosen setup, test it, and make sure you have the necessary rights to stream every element.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream: YouTube says it must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Its general live-streaming guidance also says the user must be at least 16.
- An encoder workflow. YouTube describes encoders as a way to broadcast gameplay and more advanced productions, and lists OBS among its encoder tools.
- Gameplay video and audio files that you have the right to rebroadcast, plus a way to play them into the encoder.
- A reliable internet connection and time to test the stream before presenting it as a channel.
First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave account setup until the moment you plan to go live.
Set up prerecorded gameplay as a live stream
1. Confirm live access
Open YouTube Studio and check that livestreaming is available for your channel. Complete any verification or activation steps YouTube requests, and allow for the possible first-time activation delay. If the channel has a live-streaming restriction, resolve that before building the broadcast workflow.
2. Create the live stream in YouTube Studio
Use YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to create or schedule a stream and retrieve its stream URL and stream key. In your encoder, enter those values in the stream connection settings so its output goes to the correct YouTube event. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, show it on screen, or share it with people who should not control the stream. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.

3. Feed your old recordings to the encoder
Choose an encoder that can send video and audio to YouTube Live. YouTube’s encoder workflow supports broadcasts such as gameplay, but the cited guidance does not prescribe a specific method for looping local files or playlists. You will need to configure your selected playback and encoder tools to deliver the recordings as the encoder’s video and audio source. Check the chosen software’s current instructions for its exact controls; menu names and file-playback methods vary.
Plan the playback sequence before going live. Check that the next recording begins when expected, that audio continues across transitions, and that the source does not stop after one file if you intend to keep broadcasting. Do not use another channel’s YouTube playback as a shortcut source: it does not remove your obligation to meet rights requirements.

4. Test the event and monitor it
Set up and test in advance. Start the encoder before the scheduled event, inspect the incoming preview in Live Control Room, and confirm that both picture and sound are present and acceptable. Continue monitoring audio and video while the stream is active; a successful connection at startup does not prove that playback will keep running or that later files will transition correctly.
5. Keep a separate archive
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be archived automatically, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a local archive or preserve the original recordings rather than treating YouTube’s automatic archive as your only copy. An external SSD is one optional place to keep video files or an archive; YouTube does not require a particular storage device.

Check rights before rebroadcasting
YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.”
Review the rights for the gameplay footage, in-game music, any soundtrack you added, overlays, and third-party clips. Having bought a game or previously uploaded a recording does not, by itself, establish that you have permission to rebroadcast every element. YouTube lists copyright restrictions among the reasons an active stream may be stopped or restricted. If you cannot establish the necessary rights for an element, leave it out or obtain permission before streaming; this is practical guidance, not a ruling on any specific game or recording.
