For a stereo sleep-sounds stream, set FFmpeg to AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz: -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100. YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends those audio settings for stereo. The bitrate option configures audio, not video.
Set the audio options in FFmpeg
Place these options with the output they configure:
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100In a command that already has an input and video settings, the output portion could look like this:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -b:v 4500k
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"Replace the input file, video settings, ingest URL and stream key with your own values. Keep the key private. The 4500k video bitrate is illustrative only; YouTube’s video recommendations depend on codec, resolution and frame rate. The audio setting is -b:a; -b:v sets video bitrate. FFmpeg defines bitrate in bits per second, so 128k means 128 kilobits per second. Setting a bitrate for FFmpeg’s native AAC encoder activates constant-bitrate mode. Choose the right sample rate and channel layout
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS and lists 44.1 kHz for stereo. For the typical stereo sleep-sounds stream, use AAC, 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. YouTube lists 384 Kbps and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround; that is a different channel layout, not a reason to use 5.1 for ordinary stereo ambience. The sources do not establish a sleep-sounds-specific bitrate optimum.
A bitrate cannot restore detail that is missing from the original recording. Treat 128 Kbps as YouTube’s general recommendation for stereo live audio, not a promise of audible improvement for every source. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple playback formats.

Make sure the intended audio reaches the stream
If you are streaming a video file that already contains the ambience, the example command can encode its audio stream. If you have a separate audio file and a still image, you need to provide both inputs and map the intended audio and video deliberately; the example above is not a complete still-image command.
- Check FFmpeg’s output information for the expected audio codec, sample rate and channel count.
- If you use
-mapor complex filters, confirm that the final output still contains an audio stream. - Make sure the source actually contains the ambience you intend viewers to hear. A visually static scene does not mean the audio should be silent.
YouTube identifies codec, bitrate and sample-rate problems in its stream health diagnostics. Its live setup guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with audio and movement similar to the intended stream, confirm that YouTube receives audio and check the Live Control Room’s stream health messages.
