Recommended Free Tools
For a static rain scene, start with 1080p at 30 fps, H.264, CBR at YouTube’s recommended 14 Mbps, a 2-second keyframe interval, and stereo AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum—not the recommended target—for 1080p30 H.264. Choose a lower-resolution profile if your upload connection cannot sustain the higher rate, then test the complete rain loop and monitor stream health before relying on it.
Recommended starting settings
| Setting | Starting value | Why it fits a rain stream |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 1080p30 | A static visual generally does not need 60 fps; choose 30 fps unless the scene has meaningful movement. |
| Video codec | H.264 | It is a codec covered by YouTube’s encoder guidance. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube recommends constant bitrate. |
| Video bitrate | 14 Mbps recommended by YouTube for 1080p30 H.264 | YouTube lists 5 Mbps as the minimum for this profile, not the recommended target. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Audio | AAC stereo, 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps | Matches YouTube’s published stereo audio guidance. |
| Ingestion protocol | RTMPS preferred | YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data into and through Google’s servers. |
These are platform encoder settings, not a promise of uninterrupted streaming or a guarantee that a particular computer or internet connection can sustain them. YouTube’s current guidance also lists RTMP ingestion, H.265 (HEVC), AV1, and frame rates up to 60 fps. Exact bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; check YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table when choosing a different profile.
Choose a profile your upload connection can sustain
The bitrate is the stream’s video data rate; it is not the same thing as the internet plan’s advertised download speed. Test the real upload connection and leave headroom rather than configuring the stream at the full measured capacity. A connection that fluctuates around the target can cause dropped frames or disconnections.
| Profile | YouTube-listed codec options | Minimum video bitrate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | AV1 or H.265 | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 720p30 | H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p30 | AV1 or H.265 | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These are the values in YouTube’s current encoder guidance accessed in 2026. They are encoder bitrate figures, not minimum household upload speeds. The table above shows only selected 30 fps profiles; YouTube’s table covers other resolutions and frame rates. If the connection is limited or variable, move down to a profile it can maintain rather than trying to force 1080p.

Do you need 60 fps?
Usually not for a mostly static rain image. Thirty frames per second is a sensible editorial choice for that content; 60 fps can increase the bitrate requirement without adding much visible benefit unless the image contains substantial motion. This is a content-based recommendation, not a YouTube rule.
Configure and verify the YouTube stream
- Set up the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Use the stream key for the broadcast and keep it private; anyone with access to the key may be able to send video to your channel.
- Configure the encoder. Select H.264, CBR, the bitrate for your chosen resolution and frame rate, a 2-second keyframe interval, and AAC stereo at 44.1 kHz/128 kbps. Use RTMPS where your encoder supports it.
- Choose the resolution deliberately if needed. YouTube normally detects the incoming resolution and frame rate automatically. If you need to select a resolution manually, YouTube’s guidance describes using a custom stream key and enabling manual settings.
- Test the actual program before the long run. Send the rain audio and visual you intend to use, including transitions and loop points. YouTube’s instruction is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Watch stream health and messages. Check the Live Control Room’s diagnostics rather than assuming a preset is healthy. YouTube’s health diagnostics can flag audio bitrate or GOP configuration problems and warn when it is not receiving enough video for smooth streaming.
YouTube transcodes streams into output formats for viewers using different devices and network conditions. That does not remove the need to send a stable, correctly configured source stream.

Keep a 24/7 stream stable
OBS explains that dropped frames or intermittent disconnections can indicate network instability or a connection that cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Its guidance recommends testing settings for a few minutes before relying on them, lowering bitrate when needed, and using wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable. A Cat 6 Ethernet cable is one practical way to connect a computer to a router by wire; it can address Wi-Fi instability, but it cannot guarantee uptime.
- Run a realistic upload test and leave capacity above the stream’s target bitrate.
- Use Ethernet where practical; avoid relying on a weak or congested Wi-Fi connection for a continuous broadcast.
- Test the audio loop, visual loop, and transitions together. Listen for gaps, clipping, or abrupt level changes at loop points.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream-health warnings after going live, especially dropped frames, audio configuration, and GOP/keyframe diagnostics.
For a 24/7 broadcast, encoder settings alone cannot ensure continuity: the computer, encoder, home connection, and YouTube ingest path all remain dependencies if you run the stream yourself.

Plan separately for archives and DVR
Do not treat YouTube’s automatic archive as a complete recording of a 24-hour broadcast. YouTube says it can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends a local backup: “We recommend recording a local archive as a backup.” If retaining a full copy matters, arrange separate local recording and enough storage before starting.
DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours, according to YouTube’s live DVR guidance. Set viewer expectations accordingly if they may want to pause or rewind the continuous stream.

Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely issue to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames or intermittent disconnections | Upload instability or bitrate higher than the connection can sustain | Lower the bitrate or use a lower-resolution profile; test again. Try Ethernet if the encoder is on Wi-Fi. |
| YouTube reports audio bitrate configuration problems | The incoming audio settings may not match the chosen configuration | Check the encoder’s audio codec, stereo mode, sample rate, and bitrate against YouTube’s guidance: AAC or MP3, stereo 44.1 kHz/128 kbps. |
| YouTube reports a GOP or keyframe issue | The keyframe interval may not match the recommended setting | Set a 2-second interval and do not exceed 4 seconds. |
| YouTube warns that it is not receiving enough video for smooth streaming | The source may be arriving inconsistently | Check encoder load and network stability, then test at a lower bitrate or resolution and review stream health again. |
| The stream looks less detailed than expected | The selected source profile, bitrate, or connection may constrain the result | Confirm the encoder’s output resolution and use a bitrate appropriate to the codec and frame rate. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream for viewers, so the delivered playback format may differ from the encoder’s source. |
| A 24-hour broadcast has no complete replay | YouTube may not capture streams exceeding 12 hours | Use separate local recording and storage when a complete archive is important. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube rain stream without leaving a computer and home connection running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube.
