For unattended recovery, use an operating-system process supervisor or watchdog to relaunch OBS after an unexpected exit. If viewers must see something while OBS restarts, assess an independent relay or managed playout service with a standby slate—and test the full path before relying on it.
First identify what failed
A stream can stop because OBS lost its connection while still running, or because the OBS process exited. These are different failures and need different recovery measures. OBS’s interface includes “Automatically Reconnect,” with retry-delay and maximum-retry controls. It can help when the connection drops while OBS is running; it does not relaunch an exited application. Exact menus and defaults can vary by OBS release and output mode, so check the controls in your installed version. OBS Studio interface labels
OBS says it sends directly to the selected streaming service: “There are no OBS servers – the connection goes directly from your computer to the streaming service.” That means a connection problem between your computer and the destination is not repaired by an OBS relay operated by OBS. Build recovery in layers
1. Reconnect if OBS is still open
In OBS, find the automatic reconnect control and set its retry delay and retry limit for your setup. If OBS remains open but the stream is disconnected, check its connection status and destination settings. OBS identifies dropped frames as a symptom of an unstable connection or one that cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. A backup internet connection can help with a network failure, but it will not fix an OBS crash. OBS Project connection troubleshooting

2. Relaunch OBS after an unexpected exit
Configure an operating-system supervisor or watchdog to detect when OBS exits unexpectedly and start it again. Add a delay or backoff before relaunching: if a plugin, script, media source, or encoder fault is causing the crash, an immediate restart loop can repeat the failure without giving you time to diagnose it.
Test the supervisor with the actual OBS profile, scene collection, media sources, and stream event you use. A process starting again does not prove that the correct scene loaded or that the destination is live. OBS’s interface may show “OBS Studio did not properly shut down” and offer Safe Mode for diagnosis; the available interface evidence does not establish that OBS itself provides unattended crash relaunch. 3. Decide what viewers should see during the restart
Relaunching OBS can leave an audience-facing gap. If that gap is unacceptable, evaluate an independent relay or managed playout layer that can keep a “Please Stand By” slate or backup audio running while OBS is unavailable. This is an architecture to validate, not a guaranteed capability of any particular service: ask the provider to document ingest, fallback, monitoring, and destination handoff behavior, then test it with your intended platform.
A 2021 OBS forum reply suggested that a manually defined YouTube event might continue if it is not terminated in the YouTube dashboard. Treat that as historical community advice, not a current guarantee; check the event’s behavior in your account and test privately before depending on it. OBS Project forum discussion

Use a controlled recovery drill
- Record the baseline: note which OBS profile, scene collection, media sources, and destination event the stream needs.
- Test a connection interruption: while OBS remains open, confirm whether the reconnect behavior works and whether the destination returns to a live state.
- Test a process exit: in a private or otherwise safe test, close OBS unexpectedly and confirm the supervisor detects the exit and relaunches the intended setup.
- Verify at the destination: check the platform’s own live status and the viewer-facing output. Do not treat a running OBS window or process as proof the stream is live.
- Inspect evidence after the test: review OBS logs and any crash report, noting recent changes to plugins, scripts, media, or encoding settings.
- Test the fallback path: if using a relay or managed playout layer, simulate OBS downtime and confirm what viewers see and how the destination handoff behaves.

Keep music rights separate from technical uptime
A stream that stays online is not necessarily cleared to broadcast every recording. India’s Copyright Act, 1957 uses the phrase “communication to the public” and addresses rights in musical works and sound recordings. IPRS describes licensing for communication by broadcasting, streaming, or other diffusion for works it controls; PPL India describes permissions concerning sound recordings in its controlled repertoire.
